Youtube channels

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Are there Youtube channels which are worth to see?

I watched Kevin Talbot for quite long time but except of e.g. 250 mph car, it is totally stupid. I do not understand idea of buying models, just to destroy them in 30 minutes. What a fun...

Then I found Tomley RC or something like that. I thought it will be quite serious channel but it is like Talbot with lower budget. Bleh...

Tamiya Legends. It is hard to say something bad. Maybe not best channel in the world but I do not see anything wrong with it.

RCDriver seems to be interesting. No stupid things, nice reviews and ideas.

Is there something similar to RCDriver?

Here are a few I really like :

https://www.youtube.com/@theoagrc is done by our own @Misterp180. He did some good videos showing his conversion of a small back garden space into a mini race track illustrating its possible for any of us to create a driving space. He also does time trials with his various cars on his track, The Orchard Raceway :) He also discusses the cars and their hop ups. He is currently in a battle for fastest TT02 in the Poor Boys RC online challenge and he films the modifications and attempts which is also great for learning. They are nice calm videos instead of some of the loud shouty channels.

https://www.youtube.com/@MarkBryanRC is another calm Brit. He does a selection of different videos. I just recently watched 3 videos he did on hop ups and mods to improve a stock TT-02 for either road or rally running. Really good explanations and I used them when deciding on hop ups for my next build which is a TT-02. He is also taking part and filming his attempts for the Poor Boys RC online challenge and I think there is some fun rivalry between Mark and @Misterp180 in this challenge :)

https://www.youtube.com/@timediavideo/videos I think is run by another of the members here @Thomasl. In amongst the other videos there was a collection showing really interesting mods and running of a Tamiya King Cab including adding a digital dashboard, moving driver head and lights. (Can start with part 1). His posting to the channel including one of his videos was here

https://www.youtube.com/@Matteomeier is another youtuber I really like. Some of his driving videos tell nice stories. I really liked his Farm King video.

Lastly there is the official Tamiya channel that is surprisingly easy to miss. https://www.youtube.com/user/TAMIYAINC Most of the videos are in Japanese, some have captions but all have good info (watch out for the Tamiya Duck I'm sure someone could turn it into RC :) ).

There are good youtube channels out there but if you want to move away from the loud shouty car crash channels you do have to search a bit.

I quite like theRcsaylors and poorboysRC also if you like your traxxas mark Santa Maria is good he also does lots of other RC manufacturers but because he lives next to traxxas he tends to review traxxas a lot!
I find all the rc channels I watch interesting in all their own different ways! Kevin talbot I find interesting because of his reviews if you ignore the destructive content he is quite a knowledgeable person probably because he’s doing what we can never afford to do which is testing an rc to destruction but apparently he always rebuilds them when they eventually go on his rack with all the other vehicles! (I have to admit I bought a traxxas widemaxx because of his review amongst others reviews and it’s opened up a whole new avenue of rc’s for me:D) but in my downtimes I do tend to trawl through YouTube to find different channels for rc and I’m finding it’s what you are interested in and what mood you’re in at that time! tamiya legends and rc legends is a easy watch Glenn is very good on his channel and his colleague at rc icons is equally good Keith has some really rare unbuilt rc cars which again the vast majority of us can only dream of owning:wub:

anyway sorry for rambling on but do take a look at these especially rc icons if you like rc vehicles of yesteryear:)

Seconded on the ones @Gebblymentioned. Especially @Misterp180channel.

@Kai City RC is good. Some great Kyosho videos.

I also like Rex’s RC. A lot of nice run footage and considered content.

RC So & So is a fun channel. They do some lovely travelogues with funny introductions.

Pretty similar to RCDriver but purely crawler oriented is RC Review, for more focus on the builds themselves I like RCKicks. Other channels I like enough to be subscribed to are: RC Icons, RC Retro, Mark Bryan RC and more for amusement than serious RC I also like RC so and so, especially the intro's :D

Some channels I like (from memory so don't shoot me when I forgot to mention your channel please) from TC members: Kai City RC, Jack-O-Trades, Humble Vintage RC, The OAG RC and Shen RC.

Almost mandatory channels to subscribe to: Tamiyaclub and TAMIYAINC.

Not so active recently but lots of useful info on basic Tamiya kits: Nordic RC Visions and Nordic Hobby Visions.

Not active anymore IIRC but absolutely beautiful video's (better than Tamiya commercials from my childhood IMO) is Matteo's RC Movies. Also has some good one's about upgrades, interiors etc...

This list should keep you going for a while :D

Ah! Forgot about them. I watched a lot of videos and to be honest, it was my main source about upgrades etc. Great channels!

I like RC Driver and Kai City RC at the moment myself. Sometimes I listen to JConcepts stuff or Triggerking if I need a monster truck fix. Not a fan of RCKicks anymore. Seems kinda "loud" to me. I don't like the click baity untrue statements about the Falcon returning or, of late, misinformation (perhaps not intentional) like combining the forthcoming Super Sabre with a BH HS2 to make an original HS2. There is virtually nothing aside from the red shocks you can use to make a HS2 with off the Super Sabre, and even those are not the correct original versions of CVA shocks.

Matteo, as mentioned, makes very good video's. At the moment he is not so active on YT but look at his older video's. Wonderful filming.

You've got a point there.

He is one of the few showing his mistakes in the builds he does (not editing them out) and showing  the troubles he's run into doing paint and decals as well.

Also true, especially since he became a full time youtuber. His builds and back yard racing videos are still fun to watch IMO.

I spend far too much time on YouTube too. Some of those already mentioned-

  • Kev Talbot - absolute nutter, local to me too. Bizarrely I see more of my distant cousin in Kev's videos than I do see of him in real life
  • Tamiya Legends - Just excellent content, mostly building stuff to his own spec so a man after my own heart in that respect!
  • Tomley RC - really knowledgeable chap, he's covering the majority of RTR stuff from China and gives good honest reviews, but he also builds kits and races them (see recent video on BB01 carpet racing)
  • RCKicks - I find the commentary a little annoying (he suffers from the "upward inflection" / "uptalk" where he makes every sentence sound like a question, it's infuriating) he makes mistakes and isn't afraid of documenting them
  • Popalong RC - how has nobody mentioned these guys yet? Great video content and honest reviews. These guys are pretty handy at actually racing, too.

I like that it's a channel on UK soil and he's pretty down to earth overall, but oh my god, I'm glad it's not just me that gets frustrated with the TV presenter style of talking he's adopted. He didn't used to talk like that in his early videos, and he sounds odd these days, like some sort of poor man's Jeremy Clarkson!🤦🏻

Both him and RC Driver have the problem where "commas and periods don't exist i gotta get this video out because youtube algorithm and nonsense".

Mark Bryan's channel is one of the few that I've subscribe to, and I often suggest his videos for TT-02 builds.

Addam's Playground isn't half bad if you're into Tamiyas off-roaders, most of its vintage/re-res though.

Ultimate RC was pretty good when it was active, it had some good "raw" footage of RCs in action. Which is one of the more useful ways of determining if you're interested in a particular model imo. Slow-mos and selfie sticks only tell you so much.

Otherwise, I prefer reading forums and message boards, less ads and I can cut to the important info quicker.

These are my go to’s. I watched these lot more than real TV. Also I watch a lot of Mark Saint Maria, but thats mainly Traxxas stuff

The past year I came to the realization that every minute spent watching YouTube is one less minute spent tinkering on my cars.

Not all, but a lot if these videos feel like clickbait to me and apparently to other posters above. Then there is also a feeling that some of these guys are not experts at all but rather they are still figuring the hobby out while trying to extract a source of income. I still indulge into some YouTube idle time once in a while, mainly the Japanese channels as their videos bring back some good memories of my time there :) Also the fact that I don't understand what they are saying is probably why they don't irritate me :D

I tend to watch videos from Japanese makers. Although I don't understand what they are saying, it seems they are more interested in actually driving their cars instead of showing them once then sticking them on a shelf. I usually watch new up and coming channels, but usually, once they get a sniff of monetisation I lose interest. For some reason they then go from showing what they are interested in to false reviews of stuff they've been sent for free.... It becomes a case of making content for contents sake, which is naff...

I also don't have a google account, so don't bother subscribing, "hitting" the notification bell, or "commenting below".... I simply have a list of shortcuts on my desktop toolbar that I check sometimes to see what new videos are about...

Here's one of the users I do like:

My first and longest watched RC YouTuber is Glenn from Tamiya Legends and more recently RC Legends. The latter being a channel which now looks like it's closing down.

Not sure how many others have noticed, but Glenn's enthusiasm seems to be thinning out. Not that I'm criticising him, it must be a hard gig to keep up. However, it's a shame to see what appears to be a bit of a continuous and mounting tiring of the hobby and a less engaged and enthusiastic Glenn.

I know we all have times when we fall out of love with the hobby for a while and then get back into it again. I think though that given the longevity I've seen this veil of tiredness endure I think we may be witnessing the start of a permanent wind down on the amount of content we'll see and his general involvement in the hobby. I could well be wrong of course and I hope I am. Time will tell...

That's how I feel to most of the time too, "Why watch George Mchustle review a WPLPandaFMS 445566 when I could be working on stuff?".

Sometimes you can use youtubes auto-tranlslate on Japanese videos (though it may not be entirely accurate).

Yes, I do use it sometimes, but It's next to useless sometimes, and laughable at other times. However, most of the Japanese content is great to watch even with the sound off....

I like these Japanese channels:

https://youtube.com/@KazumonChannel?feature=shared

He sometimes run cars at my "former home track" which is awesome.

And this guy that - I believe - is the official Tamiya driver?

https://youtube.com/@rc6055?feature=shared

As @toyolien mentioned they do seem like they are running their cars a lot, sometimes on really run down or low key tracks. It's refreshing compared to "you need that buggy" or "this is the best hop-up" videos.

The monetization is really sad but it's part of what the world has become. Just like taxi cabs, food orders or groceries delivery and of course eBay content, the small guys are doing the leg work while the big guys (with the ideas) are collecting the money. The result, in the case of YouTube, is the endless pathetic pleas for subscribing (you no longer need to like by the way) and the infuriating misleading video titles or montage thumbnail to make you click. The poor devils are just trying to make money.

And then there's the "shorts", to suit the rapidly diminishing attention span of humans. Now you can be fed automatically in 1min snippets, that you watch behind glassy eyes with your mouth slightly ajar.

Hmm I should probably go work on my rally car now 😅 Sorry if I enjoyed making it all sound more dramatic that it is in reality 🤣

@Pylon80

You put it how I had it in my head, but couldn't find the right words. I do find it really depressing the more I think about it, so I don't. I just get on with my own stuff and don't follow the latest trends etc. I'm happy with my luddite existence and I'm also off to start my rally build.... Might even do a build thread.

If you make a thread, so will I ;) I enjoyed making one for my M-05 but it did take me an enormous amount of extra time. Now I feel selfish for not doing the same for the rally car 😅
