Traxxas Titan 12t motor fitted to DT02

Did it today, including 19t pinion but had a slight shock that I couldn't put the cover back on the gearbox as the motor shaft was too long.

I started filing the motor shaft by hand as I had no other tool but realised it would take too long so the easier option was to drill a hole in the cover and the motor shaft protruded about 1mm outside the cover.

I was concerned about the ingress of dust and dirt through the hole but found a solution and stuck the lid off a Tamiya grease tube onto the cover with apoxy resin. It was originally blue so I painted it black to match the rest of the gearbox.

I fit the Traxxas Titan 12T to most of my Tamiya - I use a dremel to cut the shaft down, but you could use a hacksaw and then just sand it. Maybe next time...

Yeah, really must get a dremel, seems good for lots of things with different attachments, maybe even essential to have in a RC toolkit.

Saw this one locally for £20 so maybe get it, cordless with lots of attachments.

Next time you should buy a generic 12T 550 motor, it'll be the same thing but with a shorter motor shaft.

Either way, nice body shell!

I had the same issue with the yeah racing 550 motors had to dremel the end off the shaft. Also had to remove the motor sleeve. 
 

the 19t might be geared a bit high for the titan 12T, you can burn them up if you load them up too much.

Those motors fit on lunch box perfectly

Hop up 53831 might help, it's a heat sink but it also has an aluminum plate that will push the motor out a bit.

Thanks, I did see the Titan 12T lookalikes on eBay (spelt TLtan) but decided to get a genuine traxxas.

Thanks re body shell.  The idea for the body came from a Pete Wylie YouTube video where he shows how to mount a sand scorcher body on the DT02 chassis. I happened to have an RC with that chassis (Nissan Titan) so decided to give it a try. First I did a kamtec lexan sand scorcher body but then also saw a couple of hard body sand scorcher bodies on eBay.

Thanks for the advice re the 19 tooth pinion gear, the DT02 gearbox takes either 19t or 17t pinion gear, not sure the 19t will cause the motor to heat up much more than the 17t as it's only 2 teeth more?  I will be powering it with 2S lipo.

I have that and it is really useful. Suggest you get the sanding drum refills too as they are really useful for doing bodies. Just cut close to the line and sand the rest of the way. Create quite a mess though so you may want to do it outside. Also, you will need to recharge a few times for a whole body.

Thanks for the info and advice. These are coming into Lidl on Thursday and hopefully also the extra sanding drum refills. I wasn't sure, being cordless, whether it would be powerful enough compared with a mains operated one but sounds like you have got on ok with it.

17t is 9.3:1 the 19T is 8.3:1 

its 0.8 module (32p) so a few teeth does make a fair difference.  It will depend a lot on the surface but I melted a few 12T 550 motors in my holiday buggy (dt02) both running 7.4v lipo. All I can say is monitor it closely, my experience was I killed one motor on its first pack, the other was about 6/7 packs in. I think the surface made all the difference, and the run times were fairly long on 5000mah packs.

Cheers for the advice, I've got a 17t pinion gear so will swap to that. I mostly run on compacted forest tracks but also on grass now and then with enough room that I can keep it at full throttle for sometime.

Already had a thin heatsink so fitted it and trying to decide if I like the look of it.

Hopefully with the heatsink and gearing down from 19t to 17t the motor won't overheat or burn out running on 7.4v lipo.

Believe it or not, the Titan 12t is manufactured specifically for Traxxas to their spec, and is of higher quality and performance than generics or even the Arrma 12t. They’re surprisingly decent. (Can’t believe that I’m saying something nice about Traxxas electronics)

I did wonder if there was any difference between the generic 550 motors and traxxas branded. Sometimes it seems we're just paying more for the name but if the Titan is made to a certain spec for traxxas that sounds good.

Titans have a bit of forward timing on them IIRC whereas the generics have none. Lots of local races here in the US use them for spec classes, and it's a bit sad that Traxxas is going to phase them out with a new entry-level brushless system that got leaked a few months ago.
