I was hoping to be giving the heads' up on this beauty this time, but you beat me to it

Man, what an absolutely gorgeous release... all that mint green goodness just blew me away! IMHO this kit is infinitely more appealing than the special Ultima version. If I didn't have a Mid already, I'd be chasing after it for sure! Can't wait to see more photos.

My orders in! But I’m having to contact my credit card company to get my card replaced with a metal one because with all the future releases is bound to catch fire!

Looks great, but I still have ‘t built my mid with pretty much every kyosho option. The only ones I don’t have are the carbon chassis,  and I don’t have the titanium rods. The rods I actually forgot about and will order when I build mine.
Also is that paint Tamiya Cobalt Green? It looks a little different.

Ooh, I hope this isn’t too crazy expensive.  I am in the same boat as @Rb4276, having an unbuilt Mid with all the hop-ups waiting, but I will still try to get one of these.  Love these unique re-releases, really makes me wish Associated would see the light and rerelease some of their worlds cars.

I really hate this trend to offer "limited" editions.  I wish Kyosho and others would make all their products available for everyone who wants one.

I was curious about the color as well.  Thanks to the re-re, Mid parts are relatively plentiful and cf chassis plates are readily available so one could simply build one.

As it happens, I was running the vintage Mid this afternoon.  What a great handling and fun to drive car!!

I love a good limited edition, but I'm not sure this one works for me:

  • Matching body paint to the wheels and wing is going to be "interesting" to get the box art look.  It may not be easy.  A pre-painted body would have been better in this case I think.
  • Other than the very slightly different bodyshell, it's just a Mid with a selection of already available Option House parts and a JJ Ultima wing.  There's nothing really unique about it (aka parts bin special).
  • It's a good deal with the included Option House parts, but if you already have a Mid what's the appeal?  Is it really that desirable?  Is it that well known a car?
  • If you're buying it to run it because of the included parts, and don't want the mint green look, you'll still need to get a standard wing and wheels.

At £460 here in the UK, I wonder how well it'll sell...

I'm really on the fence with this one too, but in all probability I'll just pass. Mostly because as it's a replica, it makes sense to paint it in the correct colors. I'm not a fan of the mint green!

And it seems replicating the exact color to match the wheels could be quite tricky. Quote from Kyosho's instructions:

"Approx blending ratio of Peppermint green = White: 70% + Green: 30% + Blue: Few drops (use water based lexan paint)."

In my case, I'm sure I'd screw its up! 😅

Well, I suppose one can use PS54 cobalt green if they do not trust mixing colors themselves.

I am pretty sure Kogawa-san got that color idea from his Bianchi road bike..

I could not care less about box art or replicas, but what does this re re offer that a garden variety Optima Mid with factory hop ups does not?

That is an honest question.

They should go the Tamiya route and offer a regular model for runners, and special pink and poka-dot editions for people that need shelf stuffers.

Ti colored alloy bling is the difference I see. Lexan wing which is not offered on the re re optima mid and also a slightly different body. Sway bars not included. Good excuse to acquire a couple more.

Ordering all of the hop ups alone on PJ would run like $359 CAD before tax or shipping for me.  The cheapest Optima you can find in my area is like $500 CAD so it'd cost quite a bit to just have most of these upgrades added.  If it launches with a price lower than this it'd be good.

Kyosho OTW143 HD ST Link Set
Kyosho OTW144 CNC Deck Mount
Kyosho OTW145 CNC Rear Sus Holder
Kyosho OTW146 Aluminum Servo Mount
Kyosho OTW101C Ball Diff (front and rear)
Kyosho OTW136 Carbon Front Shock Stay
Kyosho OTW137 Carbon Rear Shock Stay Set
Kyosho OTW141 Carbon Upper Deck
Kyosho OTW142 Carbon Chassis
Kyosho OTW125C Universal Swing Shaft

As someone who's only getting back into this hobby after decades, I'm just glad companies are releasing classics or updated iterations of them so I finally have a chance to own some

Yep, aside from colour differences in some parts (shocks, wheels, wing) it looks like you get the JJ Ultima wing extensions, Optima Pro body and Titanium coated front and rear shock shafts.

I agree, it's a good price for a runner if you want one to hop up and like the looks.  I think the problem might be that lots of people already have one, so it needs to appeal to the collectors which I'm not sure it does enough.

Who drove the car this one was styled after in the '87 Worlds? Katsunori Kondo? I ask since people probably don't remember this car as well because it didn't win. In 4wd, everybody remembers the winning Cat XLS and Masami's story. Its a cool Mid they're offering and everything, but it doesn't have the draw like Joel's Ultima or Masami's Cat.

Exactly my thoughts too  :)

The car was driven by Akira Kogawa.

To add to the thoughts above, MB Models in the UK opened up a pre-order as soon as the car was announced.  I think they have 50 on order, when I first checked it shortly after going live there were 47 left to purchase.  A couple of days later and it's at 42, with only 1 or 2 gone in the last 24-36 hours:

In comparison, the JJ Ultima flew off the pre-order allocation and was sold out very, very quickly.

Me too man.. I had no money in my youth so Kyosho and Akira Design's collaboration to bring back these legendary cars is extremely welcome!   I kind of made a shrine-like display for Kogawa-san's cars.  haha.  I told him this is like a dream come true.  Hopefully one day he can visit my pretendRCshop.

I have got one on order, but am finding the paint issue infuriating too. Kyosho have a track record of this though whereby they paint a buggy for the box-art using their own home-made colour. It's pretty galling to release this limited edition model with the stunning colour being a major part of the appeal, but then not make the exact colour available to buy. Could they not have just pre-painted it for us?

I mean, they are giving ratios of paint to mix together, but is lexan paint even available in the old liquid-jar form anymore?

Yeah so true, The acrylics that airbrush painters use will work, but what brand and shade exactly? And….if you don't have an airbrush then what?

I like the continuation of re-releases, even though this one is not for me.

I do wish Kyosho would do something about the optima steering upright, to spruce things up. It’s pot metal looking and cheap

Exactly! Snapshot_rccars on Instagram posted this from the manual, so I guess that's all the info we have. I don't have an air brush (or the skill necessary to get good results with one) so my best effort would be to try combining cans of Tamiya PS paint in the hopes of getting a match.

I estimated my chances of a successful result to be slim to none! 😅

Using a non-standard color and at this price point, the body and wing should come pre-painted.

Shame on you Kyosho.

Anyway, the instructions say "use water based lexan paint" so that narrows the possibilities a bit.

I guess if you're willing to shell out $400 (or more) for the car, you can afford to spend a couple hundred more to have it professionally painted.  I'm not willing to do either.
