Sand Scorcher Motor Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Just stripped down my new-to-me vintage sand scorcher and it had a standard 540.

Had a Tamiya torque tuned motor, that I read would fit but didn't, so wondering what motor upgrade options I have? Cheers.

Huh, I wonder why your Torque Tuned did not fit.. Would you be able to post a picture?   Was it the wire length or what was the issue?

Torque Tuned is the same dimenions as the standard silver can..   honestly the SS is best with something gentle like your Torque Tuned motor or Sports Tuned motor at best..

Thanks for your reply.

The torque tuned would not physically go into the motor bay.

That is odd.. but I can sort of visualize what you are saying because the SS has a cup-like housing where the motor fits into.

I measured the diameters per below just now..

540 standard silver can. 35.6mm

Torque Tuned 35.74mm

Learned something new today..  so it looks like you might want to opt for the standard silver can.. (?).

The vintage gearbox cases are a fraction smaller internally than the ReRe gearbox case.

There’s also a locating pin in the vintage gearbox that gets in the way.

It’s a pain, but you can remove the pin and file the inside of the case to open it up a bit, or replace the gearbox with a ReRe box.

Then a TT or Sports Tuned will fit 👌

Yeah, I would think they would.. but given the Torque Tuned is just a hair larger (and considering dimensional tolerance on both the motor and the gear case housing) I suppose when the stars all line up it does not fit.  :(

Thanks, will try to find the locating pin or if not get a re re gearbox.

Thanks for measuring the diameter, will have to stick with the standard 540 for now.

No problem.   Yeah, the 540 is actually the 'right' power for this chassis.. imho.    As for the dampers, they actually work fairly well for the most part.. the car just does not drive like, say Kyosho's Beetle..  The Kyosho Beetle can handle brushless motors no issue too.. and can go MUCH faster with superb stability if you want to try that next time around.

The SS is a fantastic car though.  Willy and I love ours.  :D

Thanks 👍

I want it to be a runner but wanted to keep it original (thinking mostly about dampers) so will finish it and see how it goes on the standard 540.

I'm have other rc's that go much faster and so maybe enjoy my SS for what it was meant to be in its original form.

That's a great idea.  I drive my cars only at comfort speeds these days as I'm not into blistering fast runs nor racing any more.  I like to watch my models in motion.. is how I describe my driving style these days.   :D

I get where your coming from, I've done the GPS speed runs etc, and maybe it's time for me to just enjoy it in motion and that's enough 👍

Oh yeah, you speed demons go super crazy speeds, I know.

I spend quite a bit of time and effort on the body so I drive all my cars, but just sensibly.  B)  and it's actually quite fun driving scale speed and cleanly.

What your saying makes sense to me and the whole upgrading thing for performance and bling isn't that important when you've got something that is great in its own right.

After what I said, ordered the 20 tooth pinion gear and 65 tooth spur gear today to get the most top speed out of the standard 540 motor.
