Well, it turns out I am capable of making a decision.

£80 later, another M-05 chassis kit in my possession!

I had to postpone the build because I wanted to get hold of a few Hop-Ups before starting:

As you'll probably spot, RCJaz sent entirely the wrong bearing set  I now have a huge amount of 1050 bearings. Not much good to me.

  • M-05 Ver II A-Parts; because they were cheap and can accommodate square-case LiPo's
  • Stainless Steel hinge pins
  • Lightweight gear shafts (because = cheap)
  • CVA Dampers (intended for a TT02... I hope these fit)
  • 3Racing Universals
  • 18T Hardened Pinion
  • Aluminium hex hubs
  • Low-friction step screws (because I'm obsessed with hex-hardware)

Now whilst I had a complete kit, so all the required hardware, I always switch everything I can to stainless steel hex-head hardware. Is anyone else quite as disorganised as me though?

There is a system. It's just that nobody knows what the system is.

1 hour in to a virtually stock M-05 build:

I also located these Spec R (RIP) lower suspension arms which I used to run on my MF-01X. They have a captive hinge pin which is held in place with a grub screw from below. Let's see how long they last!

Powaaaa is going to be courtesy of a silver can, after reading some of the feedback in The M-Chassis Thread about having a low-torque motor to take advantage of maintaining momentum, rather than a really "hot" motor which will have harsh off-throttle braking. If it's not fast enough, I'll put a 3S battery in!

Didn't get chance to build the dampers, but that's pretty much all that's left to do (and fit a servo of course). These wheels look amazing. They're intended to look slightly "stretched" by having a larger outer rim diameter vs. the inner.

239mm on the left; 210mm on the right.

The left will eventually be home to my MK2 Golf GTI body:

It's gonna look so cool! B) (I hope)

That sponge bumper is cool.. i should get one for my m05..

I was going to add some foam (bumper material) directly to the inside of the body on my Mk1 golf. Not sure if anyone has done that before.

Just be aware that it doesn't suit a lot of bodies. The original M-05 bumper is super shallow, this foam bumper wouldn't fit my MK2 Escort and it's possible that it won't fit the Golf once I've mounted the body correctly. It protrudes a lot further!

Finished the 2nd car tonight;

I originally thought you needed 53575 to make 50mm dampers...I was wrong. These piston rods are identical to those included in the 54753 TT02 CVA set. So they were chucked into the spares pile...

Another absolute black hole of parts; I keep everything. This is where countless V-Parts come to their final resting place

I went with the fluoro red springs purely because they looked cool. I'd like to create some of those realistic suspension movements you see on YouTube, so I figure these really soft springs are a good starting point. Of course, it might just bottom-out everywhere, that remains to be seen!

For the servo I used the trusty 3Racing rip-off of the Tamiya servo saver and a Blue Bird servo I got in a sale aaaaages ago. It's a 7kg metal-geared servo with a 0.11s speed on 4.8v. Should be sufficient for the little M-chassis.

Chassis finished.

Just need to add the electronics and tidy everything up, then I can decorate and paint the body.

Thanks for reading.

Looks dandy!

I thought the MK2 Golf was a 210 mm, but looking closer I realize they chose to do a four-door Rallye version. The Clubman looks spiffy, need to have a look at if I can find that one somehow (just to add to the Project list again, hah).

The wheels look tasty together with the Golf body. Looks like a proper Saugergroup-car.

I was close to getting a 2nd hand M-07 last week, to have an excuse getting a Golf MK2 body. It's just so nice. Looks a lot better than the off proportions MK1 body (and I am a MK1 person in the 1:1 world).
