If you’ve only been using aerosol WD40 so far, imho it’s mainly the aerosol component that’s doing any solvent/cleaning ability which will dissipate when evaporated. WD40 from an unpressurized jerrycan doesn’t.

Are you washing off WD40 with water afterwards?

Motorfactors sell “degreaser” aerosol cans  made for spraying on engine parts then hosing off with water. Cheaper than WD40 & generics.

I use aerosol electric Contact Cleaner to clean greasy bike & RC parts when I don’t rinse with water afterwards. Collect drippings in a solvent proof can & reuse to soak next greasy parts.

@alvinlwh, Just remove the grease with WD-40 and wash it off with IPA, it’ll stop any leftover WD40 from breaking down the new grease.
I usually decant my WD40 and let the  propellant gas off before using.

I'm not sure if any further info is needed at this point, but I just wanted to throw in the "dish soap" suggestion since I don't trust brake cleaner or WD40 on RC parts. It's also safe for your hands ;)

If you're asking about what you should buy next time you are out shopping, I think the community has decided, you should forget about WD-40, brake cleaner and just buy an electric lawnmower, some dry lube from an adult shop, 2 spare diffs for when it explodes due to lack of lube.  You should definitely buy paint!, didn't you ask about buying paint?. And tyres, you're gonna need tyres.

Oh and as for your actual question, have you got a wife?

Sorry.

Dish soap will do nothing much to this thick "axle grease" like goo. It can work if I stick the bita in a pan and boil it, but not sure if the gasket and plastic will like boiling water or not.  For light oil parts like dampers I do use dish soap and the ultrasonic machine though.

Dunno about boiling, but just hot tap water and an old tooth brush seems to work fine for me. I always wipe off all the excess "goo" from the parts first with paper towel or an old greasy rag, so there's only a thin film of grease left for the dish soap to remove. WD40 can melt polycarbonate body shells and other things, so I try to keep it away from my RC stuff in general. I'd only consider using it if the parts were 100% metal and the gunk was so stuck that dish soap wouldn't work. Dish soap is a degreaser, especially the types that are more focused on degreasing than general usage.

It is a bit hard to give thanks when I specifically asked about a or b and got c, d, e, f as the answer instead.

This is like an oil or grease thread. Ask which one is best between a or b and people instantly drop everything they are doing to recommend c through z!

Dawn dish soap for me discolored my M38's black plastic parts during restoration so I switched to rubbing alcohol instead.   For plastic gears probably okay to use dish soap..

But everyone should have motor spray in their arsenal..

I’m yet to find someone willing to send that to where me and @alvinlwh live, seems I’d have more luck getting a Molotov cocktail overnighted. When I do I will arm up though!

I’d agree on being careful with dish soap, some of it contains rinse aid these days which I can only imagine helps paint stick wonderfully😂

See you can source CRC MAF cleaner at your local auto parts stores.  It's basically motor spray.  Honestly I can't tell the difference between the two.  VOC compliant and all.

See, I sound like a broken record once again.    It's okay, I'm totally fine with being obsolete.. honestly, I am relieved that I no longer need to take responsibility in this disfuctional world.  haha

You had missed the parts about:

A. I already have an electric lawnmower

B. Since I cannot be bothered to use it cut the grass but just use weedkiller, it will not explode due to lack of lube, since it is never used.

And no, my question was not about what I should buy on my next shopping trip.

I'm only joking with ya,, I'm sure you know that but it'd not helping your decision making.

Can your wife not clean it for you?

I reckon if you ask your wife what would work best, dishwasher or washing machine, she might do it for you??

Worth testing??? If you're a brave toxic male chauvinist, and if not, take a lesson from Sean Connery and give her a little schlap.

Rubber O-Rings do not like WD40. Also no brake cleaner.

Stripe it completele in greasy condition and put all plastic & metal parts in an small old jar. Poor in some WD40 or brake cleaner, close it, give it a rest, shake it, rest, shake it...

Take all parts out, clean em with paper towel and old toothbrush. Give em a quick final clean with brake cleaner.

Clean all rubber O-rings with paper towel, gaskets as well.

 I am not shure if OP expectet a serious answer.

Plastic ok with brake cleaner? Everywhere else seems to indicate it is not ok?

I’ve read there are different formulas of brake cleaner, some plastic safe and some not.

A combination of the U.V rays from the light of a full moon and the earth's gravitational pull will clean that diff out with minimal fuss or damage. You could buy a light that replicates the light of a full moon from a shop and use the power of the earth's gravity to remove all grease and grime from the differential or perhaps my wife cleaned it when I wasn't looking?. Get a new less hostile wife?. Lol

Sorry.

some went off to talk about substances I did not ask about, have or intend to get.

I thought that was the intended thread direction?.

Actually, I couldn't help myself from joining the derailing of the thread direction after all the suggestions started rolling in but no one mentioned the dishwasher or the wife.

Ah, elbow grease, not heard of that for a long time. Used to be a cleaner for a living and a lot of people swore by it, I wasn’t that impressed but it might be good for this.
