What’s everyone's RC backlog look like?

Recommended Posts

With the recent thread about what to do in winter, it got me thinking about my backlog and how I should probably work on it. I’m talking about kits that you have that you bought to build and not keep NIB, or kits you have multiples of and will definitely build. Here’s what mine looks right now:

Fighting Buggy 2014 (body already painted)

Sand Scorcher 2010 (body already painted)

Frog

Novafox

FF-04 EVO

M-06 Beetle

Avante Black Special

VQS 2020

Tope Force 2017

Top Force EVO.

TA03R-S 911 GT1

Hotshot 2007

Scania R620

Bigwig 2017

Grasshopper

Comical Avante

Metal Dump Truck

Lunchbox

to be honest, it will probably take me a couple of years to clear this backlog. I just haven’t been building a lot of kits recently. This year I built a TA08 NIB and two TT-02 (base and Type S) from parts. The whole pandemic (2020-2022), I did not get to build a single kit. Come to think of it, I don’t think I even drove an RC car in 2020-2022. I had thought about building during those years to commemorate a milestone or happy event in my life, such as my dad’s recovery from covid, the birth of my first and currently only child, the successful heart procedures my dad underwent (stents, pacemaker and valve replacement). Unfortunately, I never got to build anything. Hopefully I can get that itch to start building again.

Blimey, I thought I had a queue! :o In order, I've got these to do. I'm practicing and learning on the kits I've already done and the "lesser" kits, working towards the higher end ones I'm really looking forward to building...

For this Winter, no outdoor spray painting required:

Rising Fighter

Monster Beetle

Wild Willy 2

From Spring when the shells can be painted:

Novafox

Optima Mid Koswork Edition

Top Force Evo (I have a Penguin shell and undertray to paint)

Egress Black Edition

I don't have a lot of NIBs (although I have been stacking them up over the last few years) - usually I buy to build, so they don't stay NIB for long.  That said, in my NIB pile right now, I think there is:

  • Landfreeder Quadtrack
  • Volvo A60H
  • Rover Mini Cooper Monte Carlo (may never build this, much as I'd like to)
  • Kyosho Mantis Volvo 850 (raffle prize win from years ago)
  • CC01 Landfreeder (missing body and axle parts, cannibalised to fix another car)
  • TT01 bare chassis
  • Scania R470 Highline Orange Edition (cannibalised for parts, need to replace axles before building)

I'm in no rush to build any of the above, I've got plenty of other projects on.  Also may get a Mercedes C11 which would go in the "to build if ever there's a race class" pile, and probably a Squash Van for a Christmas build.

However, my project backlog is just daft.  I've just been into my Car Manager app and produced this list of current projects - however this is incomplete, I've booked a week off work in November to go through every part of my RC storage area, and catalogue exactly what I've got and what state it's in, as right now I couldn't even say how many cars I have.  Probably less than I think and definitely more than I need, but there's probably enough build time to keep me occupied for 5-6 years of Sundays, and enough predicted cost to eat up my disposable until retirement.  My week off may well end in a sell-off!

Hehe. That's  a lot of projects here. I only have an unbuilt Grasshopper,  which I got super cheap because I wanted the body for my runner Grasshornet. Later I have got the parts needed to build it as a Hornet,  which was what I wanted as a kid (before I saw the Hotshot).

I’ve got

Tamiya boomerang (full build)

Kyosho dirt master (body, install electrics)

Kyosho javelin (full build)

Arrma vortex (rebuild after a summer of hard use! but hilarious)

Tamiya monster beetle (rebuild)

Tamiya terra scorcher (body install electrics)

Tamiya durga (finish shock’s install electrics)

absolutely no time line on any of these because i built my jj ultima the week I bought it so it jumped the line and the 60th anniversary optima mid and Yokomo dogfighter will probably do the same?

Hmmm, this will cause me to think about it. I have some NIB kits that will be built eventually (I’d imagine), plus some projects and restorations:

NIB:

TAMIYA: Bruiser,  Fighting Buggy

KYOSHO: Beetle, Tomahawk, Ultima, Optima

Restorations:

TAMIYA: Big Wig, Top Force, Fire Dragon, TGX 1/8 Nitro Rally Car

OTHER: Kyosho Pegasus, Schumacher CAT XLS, Marui Samurai, Kyosho Nitro Rally Car and Nitro Monster Truck, Yokomo MX4

I think thats everything. I also have other NIB being OG Fox and Clod (Non Chev), 40th and 45th Porsche, Kyosho Scorpion, RC10 Classic which may see building action as well one day

My list is rather small..

October:

Swap all FHSS m-chassis cars running brushed motors to FAAST receivers, reprogram 7PX-R for those cars.

Reconfigure M05 and V2Pro to run in my pretend pylon test course..  If they don't run well I am going to move the regular M05 to my garage along with the BSR m-chassis to make space for pretendRCshop.

Paint street version SandScorcher body.. all sanded and prepped, but still not sure what color (may skip to Fall 2024)..

November:

JJ WC Ultima build (received! :D)

Make more garage accessories (styrene) to decorate photoshoot.

December:

XM1S #3 with new Beetle body.

January:

WC Worlds Spec Optima MID build.

2024:  TRX4 fully loaded, Egress rere for outdoors.

My pile of shame currently stands at;

Nib kits awaiting building -

M01 Mini Cooper

M02 Fiat Abarth

M06 Alfa Giulia

F104 Ferrari 312T3

TA03 Kure Nismo GTR

TA03 Lancia 037 Rally

TA02W Nismo Clarion GTR LM

Group C Mercedes C11

TL01 Toyota Celica GT4 Monte Carlo 1997 x 2

TA02 Toyota Celica GT4

TA02 Opel Calibra V6

Wild One

Ultima 87 JJ

Random unfinished projects -

A F103 bitsa build with a TRG body - needs steering fitting and then painting

A Group C bitsa build with a HPI Pantera body - stalled because it now needs cutom alloy machining bits to widen rear track and ive struggled to find someone reliable to do it. And some custom decals.

An OG Vanquish currently in bits in a shoebox - needs most of the diff and outdrives plus centre drivetrain and some chassis bits which although now available from VQS kit breakers, arent cheap.

Wow. There's no judgement in that "wow", but wow nevertheless. This is something I have to understand better. I've very rarely have/had kits in any number sitting around waiting to be built. A few recently that took so long to get to me like the Thunder Dragon and Optima Mid, I had lost interest in before they arrived and sat for a time. This is why I cancelled my BBX pre-order and then vowed never to pre-order again. I still may get one, but its so better for my wallet to make logical, informed decisions not based on "shiny new thing" or "limited edition" panic. As a general rule, buying an RC kit is exciting when I do decide to pull the trigger, just like when I was a kid. I order it., I eagerly await it. When it comes, I build it. At worst, I may have to wait until the weekend because of fatherly duties or because I'm just too worn out from working all the overtime. So, referring strictly to the OP's question of unbuilt kit backlogs, how do these numbers get so high? Genuinely curious.

@saito2 I'm probably a rare case, and I apologize for this long over share: You see, I lost my GF of 23 years, four years ago - God rest her soul. Bouncing from hobby to hobby to occupy my mind from going into dark places, I discovered the re-re Blackfoot and decided to get one, last Christmas. When I received it, I was flooded with emotions of simpler times from the 80s. I decided what the heck, why not get some other iconic models that I was never able to obtain BITD. Well, that spiraled into what the heck, why not get every model I lusted over among the first 150. Once I got going, I thought hey, how about a model either vintage, rerelease or current, to represent every year of Tamiya 1976 - present. So over the last year, I have been hunting and gathering for my collection, currently over 90 models. I've also been busy working to collect every motor, as many batteries as I can find, and vintage radio sets, too. I am setting up a spare room with a nice work area and display shelves, cases, etc. This addiction has become my sanctuary, and helps me feel joy again, in between the sadness. What has happened is that I got caught up in the planning, the thrill of the hunt, that feeling of getting the prize, and the ultimate goal of creating an experience where I have access to running and gawking over a small hobby shop worth of Tamiya History.

So here I find myself with a 1/3rd Vintage, 1/3rd Rere and 1/3rd newer kits. Some need no work at all, some need bits and pieces, some need to be restored, and the rest are full builds. Everything's just been piling up as I prepare the room, and of course there's work every day and most Saturdays to deal with. I think my hunt is nearing the end, which should mean you'll start seeing build pics from me soon enough! I only have 2002 left to represent, and I'm thinking either the Terra Crusher, Wild Commando or the Baja King will fill the spot nicely when the right deal comes around. Sadly, I procrastinated new builds to where I completely blew the prime painting season. I may have to research indoor painting/ventilation methods now, lol.

I too, procrastinated this summer when it comes to painting ;).

I have no backlog and I’m making a concerted effort not to get one. This position is offered without any judgement, I’m just aware of my own tendency to hoard and go a little overboard.
Much of my fleet has been funded by dissolving my video game collection on eBay. This was never meant to be a collection it was just that my backlog of games I fully intended to play slowing turned into a large “new & sealed” collection as the years passed and time became a far more restricting factor than money, I’m fighting against my nature to assure it doesn’t happen again.

I have just got back into RC after ~38yrs away.  When I was 12 in 1985, I had a Hornet given to me as a gift from my father, I then bought myself a Fox and then a Kyosho Bandido.  A couple yrs back I got myself a XB Hornet and have been using it off and on.  Earlier this month I turned 50 and went to Japan for a holiday, while there i visited the Tamiya Plamodel store and got myself a Nova Fox to relive that time 38yrs ago when I built the original Fox.  Over the last few days i have been building it and really getting back into the hobby, watching YouTube videos on the subject and joining FB groups etc.  I have since ordered and have waiting to be built a Hotshot re-release and BBX.  My list is very short compared to others, but I am really enjoying being back in the hobby.

I have 2 sand scorcher bodies to paint before summer.

I've been very busy in the last weeks and months trying to clear my backlog because I am rewarding myself for clearing it with another car :D

I am currently considering that reward to be a Boomerang or a tt-02b.

I made a spreadsheet earlier in the year and I've mentally decided not to re-open that document

I, like many (I hope) am very limited on my hobby time. Some weeks I'll get a couple of evenings in, other times I'll go for a month or 2 without picking up a wrench. Sad times. What is unrelenting is my online shopping habit, so I end up with boxes and boxes of parts which I acquire without any time to install anything.

I'm ashamed to say that this does result in me forgetting what I have sometimes and even accidentally double ordering and acquiring duplicates!

I need to stem the online shopping (for lack of space more than anything) and focus on spending time, not money, on this hobby.

-I've 2 nib dt03's sat on the shelf, from the £60 amazon deal. I sold both the motors and escs, wheels & tyres and one of the bodies, (sales paid for one of the kits, and parts) and now have bought all the extra parts (plus kyosho scorpion wheels) to build a pretty looking speed run car, but that's not going to get run until we get decent weather in Scotland...😳

-An M05 I didn't really need, or want, but has upgrades, alot of spares, and was £20.... Needs wheels/tyres ,body and elecs. They race these at a local (ish) indoor club, (I think @neowhizz has some spares for me....🙄), but they spec a 21t corerc motor (£10), so hopefully a cheap build to race over the winter months.....🤞

-Boomerang RS500 ,4s 5700kv Speed Run car. Already been through with new bearings, but will need the shock oil changed (maybe new shocks, need to see how originals perform at speed..) mounting brackets making for the body, plus the body painting in the livery of.....🤔🤷‍♂️

-Bullhead body mod with a rumble V8 from a cheap B&M bargains toy, run off the 3rd channel, everything's in the box, 'just' needs putting together....

-Orange Blossom 2 pulling truck build, chassis is pretty much done (lengthened Hornet), just waiting on the body back from Kamtec...

-Optima mid custom, I thought I'd finished, but managed to melt the pins on the saddle lipos (in the K1 RS200 4.5t build), and they're not that available now, so going to do a shorty conversion with it, but may aswell get a new chassis, in carbon (Nick Walker) and factor that in...🫣

-Undecided what to do with my original Ultima. I nailed in alot of RB5 parts, (gearbox/6.5t , axles, shocks, shorty) and it runs great, but got the rere now, and can convert the latter back to its original status, and have an RB5 to run again too....🙄🤔

-Lunchbox Speed run car, I was collecting parts for, but the bar has been raised somewhat recently with this chassis, with 3D printed gears and custom chassis etc, so not sure if it's worth more investment?....🤷‍♂️

Bought a 2nd hand Schumacher LD2 (now the LD3 is out), which means I need a new body (it's off a well known racer this end of the UK, in his well known colours, hes something else in the workz..) , it does mean that my daughter will probably have my Laydown, and again, will need a new body and airbrushed ,to make it hers.

- My Yokomo YZ2-T truck has slop all over the place, especially the steering, so that could do with a go through, but trucks don't really get a class to race in up here now, and parts ain't that easy to come by to become a basher...🤷‍♂️

- A Schumacher Fusion I want to strap a GPS onto, or if nothing else, just run the thing!!, spent over £100 rebuilding it a few years back, and it's never even driven fast enough to click into 2nd gear!...(finding somewhere flat enough, large enough, and out of the way enough to run nitro..)

-Then of course, I've the 1:1 car project sat in the garage...🫣🤦‍♂️

Apart from that, not much!! 🙄

Why does that 'Orange Blossom 2' name ring a bell with me @Wooders28?

My immediate backlog is

M-08R - not far into the chassis build

Dual Hunter - el kid has disassembled and cleaned it, needs rebuilding and Monster Mutt Dalmatian style body

Dual Hunter - steering needs fixing

Monster CR-01 - needs it's body

GCM Jeep - needs a battery tray. And I need to make my mind up in LiPo and the new garage (if / when it happens).

There's way more but that will do for now.

Scorcher shell needs customizing and painting for my Thunder Scorcher, intent on going for a Mad Max inspired styling for it.

VTA Javelin shell and Audi V8 Touring shell need painting for a shared TT02 chassi.

CW-01 i scavenged to start my Pajero project before the kit arrived needs a rear end built to be complete again.

Blackfoot needs its decals.

Another Blackfoot shell needs something, not sure if paint+decals or just paint, for my ORV Ranger.

Drivers for 3 Scorcher shells, 2 Blackfoot shells and my Terra Scorcher.

Im one Beetle shell short if i want them on all my intended Beetles, might look at getting a lexan shell as the last car, a Wltoys 12427, doesnt have space for a driver and is an overall quite bashing friendly with its highly flexible plastics.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with a huge backlog! It’s nice reading what everybody has waiting to be built or finished. @GToddC5 so sorry for your loss. I’m glad you found something to keep you busy and bring you joy at the same time. RC has done the same for me back in the day when I was at the lowest point in my life. Back then I was a broke college kid who could’t afford much, so when I eventually had disposable income I splurged in the hobby, buying kits that I could only drool over in magazines and Tamiya’s guide books. @Nick-W unfortunately aside from the RC backlog, I also have a video game backlog as well. I’ve resorted to buying games only when they’re heavily discounted. Lesson learned from buying Cyberpunk at launch which was a big letdown.
