BT-01.. ?!

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to post this to MB-01 thread. An extended version of MB-01. Just when I built my "FF-05" :D

Definitely not a TT-02 replacement. More like a 2WD variant and spiritual succesor to FF-series.. But finally, Tamiya made a RWD version, too :D I wonder if it will be possible to do something like TT-02S?

btw, I'm not that familiar with MB-01 chassis - did they use some extension piece or designed entirely new front part?

Edit: looks like new front, with two sets of holes - probably for 251mm WB?

To make a touring MB, you'd need longer extension parts for the chassis halves, the stock arms are abnormally wide for M chassis so they could work.

That being said, I'd sooner grab a TT02 and run some putty or something in the rear diff for a cheap, RWD-bias touring car. The TT gives you much more choice in gearing options.

Looks very entry-level, almost like one of those old QD chassis but a bit more modular.

Longest steering tie-rod in the history of ever?!

It basically is a QD chassis that can fit a 540 can.

Honestly, with how long the servo tie rod is, I could probably replace it with a spare monster truck turnbuckle that I have sitting around!

Meh... dame neee..

If Tamiya is trying to win in the entry level price point, they will fail.

Surprisingly, it has tie rods an maybe even downstops? So it's a bit better than TT-02. Plastic also looks matte and grayish, but that might be video quality. On the other hand, it has only pogo-stick shocks..

I thought this, but actually it looks like toe-rods (ie same uprights front and rear a-la MB01) with fixed upper and lower double wishbone setup. So you can tweak the rear toe nice and easily but not the camber.

It has toe rods much like previous M chassis, they're a necessary adjustment as each wheelbase needs a different amount of toe for optimum performance.

It's better than the TT02 in that the bellcranks allow for ballbearings and it works better. But not much, both are made from a semi-rubbery type of ABS plastic.

I consider toe and downstops as more important settings, so it's a good start. It also seems to have removable steering limiters on rear arms. The base version still sucks, but I see lot of potential. Especially RWD touring variant could be interesting.

I'll wait for better pics, but so far, it looks like fiber reinforced plastic, which would be nice. So far it looks like Tamiya mixed MB-01 and TT-02 and the result actually took better things from the two - which is quite unexpected from Tamiya 😂

Unless if this variant has different arms, you can't remove the steering limiters on the MB-01 (and if you did the suspension arms would pop off easily).

If you could increase the steering angle, it could work for a basic, entry level drifter. I can't think of any RWD specific touring car classes (though would be fun!).

I've been playing with an MB-01 quite a bit, I'm pretty sure that it's ABS (which is better than the brittle PC-ABS of the M05/M06).

Steering alloy balls are going to be in high demand… and those are not cheap for what it is.(PJ’s price is good but it’s been OOS for a while)

Am I right to say that it would then be the first ever RWD touring size chassis ever made by Tamiya, that is not a pan car? That, is really exciting and long overdue.

Anyone knows what the wheels and tires are on the picture? They suspiciously resemble m chassis wheel and tires...

Edit: the two sets of holes look like they have a lot more than 6mm of difference between them so I am not sure they enable 251mm vs. 257mm wheelbases.

Edit2: I recognize the wheels and tires now :) these are full TC size B)

Looks like a pain to maintain, like a M-05 or MF-01X.

It does look like something Tamiya would have designed 15 years ago and would only release now.

It is annoying in some places, but it's not nearly as dreadful to work on as those "jigsaw puzzles". I'm quite happy knowing that I'll never have to split an M05 again!

Yes, it is. I always wondered why Tamiya didn't make any RWD touring car before. Maybe because they are a bit harder to drive for begginers? Since this one allows to be re-arranged to FWD out of the box, it's not an issue anymore.

You can see bosses in the gap in the center that are partially covered by the second half. The gap appears to be around 6mm.

The other option would be 245mm wheelbase, but the gaps looks to be too small for that.

Well, if the bodies fit better my MB-01 might grow a little with the right parts.

I can see the part / tooling reduction methodology for Tamiya if the base models are all based Offa single platform.

But does that mean the end of the TT-01 / TT-02?

Will a BT-01B be next?

I'm not sure of the rationale for this chassis.  Seems like the answer to a question nobody asked.

I don't see this replacing the TT01/2 being 2WD, could definitely see it replacing the FF03 though which has had very mixed availability for a while now

What I find interesting about MB-01/BT-01 is, that there's actually space for the center shaft to run to the other gearbox. However, battery is in the way, so unless Tamiya starts making short saddle packs, I doubt that we'll see a 4WD variant to replace TT-02.

However, 2WD buggy variant might be interesting 😀
