XV01 Must Haves?

Recommended Posts

I’m 75% of the way through the strip down and thinking ahead to the rebuild now -

Mine is a box standard XV01-T, the ‘T’ being for Truck.

Not sure how much difference that makes to be honest!

Anyhow what are the absolute must have upgrades or hop ups?

I’m likely to buy the Yeah racing Titanium screw set, which is 127 pieces and £33.

I’ve got a fair selection of brushed motors, a 1060 ESC, a standard metal gear servo, and bearings in stock to use.

I have to spend wisely, so with that in mind what else should I buy?

I bought a pretty much full set of quality stainless screws from boltbase for small money if you wanted to save a few quid on screws, but obviously have to select all the sizes individually and I think there's some unusual stuff not on there, eg I'm guessing the little 2.5x5mm suspension pivot retainers would be too niche, but you can buy a big number on ebay for buttons (in fact, I have 50 on the way so I'd happily send you half a dozen if they're a problem).

The first recommended hop ups include the aluminium suspension mounts (fronts more than rear; YR cheaper than Tamiya) which fix a weak point, a spring set to get lighter rear than front, a shim or spacer to either replace or shield plastic gearbox spacer NN4 (?) (I think a M4 shim alone may do it but I still have the plastic stock part in mine) and font CVDs to avoid popping dog bones.

After that I think you're into hop ups that aren't really all that necessary for general running (IMHO).

Are many of your other metal parts rust free enough to use, like the stainless suspension shafts, shafts in gearboxes, axles etc? Those bits would be mostly in stainless I guess?

Edit: and if you break any arms I'd then buy reinforced ones. I broke an arm and did this, no breakages since. But sample size of one so that doesn't prove anything. However, first break lost a dogbone and maybe something else. And if you're buying a plastic sprue I doubt the cost difference stock to reinforced is much at all (certainly not on PJ).

If you’re on a tight budget, I would recommend building it stock. The kit should be pretty good right out of the box (my experience is with the rally version). No comparison to e.g. a TT-02. Once you ran it a couple of times you probably know for yourself in what areas you want improvement.

Only exception: If the axles are also rust victims and need replacement, it probably makes sense to get CVDs right from the start.

If available I'd recommend the reinforced j/jj parts (54445) including suspension parts instead of the aluminum ones. Also, I'd recommend the reinforced k/kk parts (54446) because some of the steering parts aren't strong enough for certain challenges (such as my personal driving style 🙂).

Do not waste money on titanium screws. It is probably one of the last Hop Ups you need. This week I bought good quality hex stainless screws for more than two XV-01 for about 10 Euros.

I read many times about aluminium suspension mounts. If you have plan to use it as a rally car, probably it is good idea. If only on hard surfaces like asphalt or pavement, I am still not sure if it is something you really need.

Do you have all orings, gaskets etc?

BTW: you can check my three Topics about XV-01. Two in "Build Tips..." and one in "Builds". Maybe you will find something interesting, because we are on more or less the same stage of build.

Any information what happened to steering parts?

Part kk3 broke during one of the first runs. Maybe I was just unlucky. Otherwise I haven't had any issues with my XV01 so far.

Some good info here. I am building an XV01 rally for running mainly on asphalt and for the first time in years managed to avoid buying lots of bling! It is actually rather nice building stock when the kit is so good.

I notice above someone recommended softer springs for the rear. I was hoping not to spend anymore cash on this project and have a load of different thickness damper oils so wondered if there was a good set up just with oils (and possibly the piston heads with 1,2 or 3 holes) that anybody would recommend.

I followed the instructions and built the dampers with the 2 hole pistons. In front I used the recommended #900 oil, but in the rear I used #400. In both of the diffs I used #2000 instead of the recommended #900. I am very happy with my XV01, it drives very nice on asphalt as well as off-road.

For me 1 hole pistons up front, 2 hole rear with 1000cst oil all round, Blue springs front and orange springs rear from the Tamiya 53163  On-Road Tuned Spring Set works perfect. (Spring rate is 140 g/mm and 119g/mm if you can't get that set, which seems to have been sold out for a long time)

It’s a really nice build stock. If you’re planning on running it in anger, I’d recommend CVDs all around, aluminum suspension mounts, aluminum hexes, and reinforced adjusters (ball cups). The aluminum NN4 spacer is only really necessary with higher power as long as the transmission is assembled correctly. I have a fairly detailed build thread floating around in “The Builds”, although my XV sees very rough use with a pretty strong 13.5.

I am halfway through my build on this one as well. Only bummer is I’m having a hard time finding Tamiya hop up parts for this build so, this has taken a backseat to some of the other cars I need to build. One of these days I hope to finish mine.

Thanks everyone for the tips.

1st things for me to purchase will be a screw set of some sort, as nothing will be salvageable from the Tamiya set.

I’ll look into a Hex set and/or stainless steel as recommended by @skom25 and @BuggyDad

Then a bearing set, RC Bearings can handle that for me.

As I reassemble, no doubt I’ll need to replace a fair few bits and it’ll be a good time to look at some Hop ups as I go along.

This will help spread the cost and stretch out the project 😎

I’m really enjoying the process and reading the threads as well.

On screws, I just added up the necessary M3 ones from the back of the manual and then put an order in at boltbase. On a suitable website like that it's the work of moments to just add bags of each length. Recommended, then I actually find the build process more convenient with bags labelled by screw size rather than a sort of approximate section of the build "Bag C".
