The Great Workshop Tidy of 2023

It's in the NIB area but actually it's a built bare chassis, run a few times, with an unpainted body and MCI Prerunner repro decals.  And it will be up for sale soon, as I need to clear some space!

I'll be keeping an eye on the trades section!

Mega job!

OK, school run done, breakfast eaten, now I need to find the motivation to tidy that last corner and sort those boxes before my final day disappears...

You say "storage area", Stacey Dooley would say "tip" 😬

Do you mean Stacey Dooley or Stacey Soloman??

Finally getting around to the final updates!  I've been away for the weekend, so haven't had time to get the last round of photos posted, but here goes.

The day started with a load of boxes littering the middle of the workshop.  Most of them had parts in, so I had to go through them all, move the car-specific parts into smaller boxes that would be stored under the cars, or put away into various drawers, or, if I couldn't find an immediate place for them, dumped on the workbench to be sorted later.

Since I'd been on this project virtually non-stop since Sunday morning, and it was now midday on Saturday, I took the decision to abort tidying the rest of the boxes, and to clear the workshop floor instead.

Floor area cleared - view from workbench down towards the house.  Random paint pots still need to be sorted once the joint storage area is cleared:

Looking back up towards the workbench - still various big piles of junk, rubbish and nonsense up there to sort out

The paint bench was cleared last week, now full of random stuff that got found and has no place to live right now

And this is my workbench!  There'll be no projects until this is cleared...

The good news is that the central alley between the storages areas is now clear, which was the #1 motivation for starting this job in the first place.

Rubber mat and foam help to save the knees when crawling around up here

Alley #1 has 2 boxes that will be used to transit stuff for sale (somebody will bonus with an Element scale garage).  The BOM, MB2 and FTX boxes are all full of random spares for said models, and need to be properly sorted into drawers or smaller boxes.  Carpet still to be tacked down.

4 more boxes in alley #2.  I think one is all Hotshot parts and one is Top Force / Manta Ray, but I could be wrong.  The other two boxes contain various studio leads / wires / computer equipment, and old 1:1 car stuff.

At the very back, I had space to store a lot of empty boxes.  Useful for when I go away, I can just grab as many as I need and load them up.

Back on the ground floor - motorcycle and bicycles safely away, huge box full of scrap cardboard for recycling, tablesaw and compressor back in place.  Other stuff to be sold / gifted / thrown away.  Anyone want a turbo trainer?  I've been trying to give it away for 5 years.

So - that's that!  Still a few boxes to go through, as you can see, and some stuff to get sorted and ready for sale.  I had hoped to get little bits done during the working day, but I got back from my weekend away full of positivity and enthusiasm, and then reality slapped me hard in the face: if I want to tidy / sell / sort anything, I've got to do it in the evenings after dinner, or on my Sundays.

I'm hoping to get at least one day on it this weekend (possibly 2, depending on how other stuff works out) so hopefully I can at least get the workbench and paint benches cleared.

Updates!  I was supposed to be clearing a friend's garage this weekend, but for reasons beyond my control, I wasn't able to do that.  Since we'd already parcelled our childperson off to the grandparents for the weekend, that gave me a couple of bonus days to crack on with the tidying.

The main focus for me was the workbench.  During the great storage area tidy, lots of stuff that we couldn't find space for just went here.  And it got deeper, and deeper, and deeper...

The paint bench was little better.

Oh, and for the record, it was the first cold day of the year.

Three-and-a-half hours later, and the bench looked like this!

This was kind of one of those "don't look behind the lens" situations because I'd moved a lot of stuff onto a trestle table to sort it, but at this point it was all at least categorised and ready to go into its forever home.

Despite the cold, it was a very nice day, so I decided to call it at 1pm, have some lunch and get out for a walk in the sunshine.  After last week's walking holiday in Cornwall basically raining from the moment I got there to the moment I left, I figured a walk in the dry would be nicer than finishing the workshop.
