Actually, curved scissors helped out quite a bit... still a pain in the butt but small, curved scissors made it *somewhat* easier to cut out. Make sure you have some sandpaper to clean up the rough edges you'll no doubt end up with, lol.

Glad the curved scissors helped and yes have needed sand paper to smooth the edges! Cutting out lexan is probably my least favourite RC activity.

It can be quite hateful.. especially the tight, tricky corners that even curved scissors struggle to get around.

But once you're done cutting and sanding, and the good job you did... makes it worth it, lol. As long as you don't make any mistakes while cutting that could ruin the shell completely... I always fear that!

When everything goes well, there is a lot of satisfaction and sense of achievement doing your own body shell, to your preferred colour and decal selection.

At one time I did quite a few lexan and hard bodies and got a bit burned out on doing them but I'll probably do another one day.

Agreed, a mis-judged cut can be difficult to recover from!

Oooh.. yeah, that does need a bit of work, lol. Will look a lot nicer when it has some new decals on it.

I took my original decals off, cut out the large Maverick logo and put that on. Mostly because the orange colour scheme wouldn't fit with the iridescent purple and green colour of the first clear shell I bought. But now I'm going to paint the second shell orange, I'm going to put the original decals on.

Nice wing!  The plastic of your original wing is in much better condition than mine, think my Desertwolf saw some quite serious previous action and the wing got in some scrapes.

As I've got a new wing, I'm just going to stick the decals back down on the original and use it as a basher wing.

Thanks.. the condition is quite surprising, given that the plastic chassis and metal chassis plate were quite badly scratched. So mine mist have got a lot of action, but very little to no rollovers.

I take it you have some more decals to put on the new wing? I'll put them back on mine once I paint the shell. It looks kinda boring with just the Maverick decal on it.

Good plan about adding the wing decals to go with your metallic orange body shell. I assume the clear body shell comes with wing decals, even though no wing?

My new wing came fully decaled, the same as the body shell so I'm good to go.

Posted

It should look good, though the metallic orange won't be a great match to the flat orange. Indeed, the clear shell comes with all the wing decals as well. I've put Modelsport stickers on the ends of my wing, but I'm not sure weather to put the original decals on instead.

Ah nice, didn't think of that. The wing already being decaled up.. makes sense, since the body was pre-painted.

I know this won't help with matching the original orange decals, and you might be going to do this anyway, but could you spray the wing metallic orange too and add some decals that match/work?

Posted

Well, if I had a second wing, I'd paint one metallic orange and keep one black... given how rare the original wing is, I'd probably keep it original. If I had another wing, such as that Vorza one... I might paint the Vorza wing metallic orange. Or at least some parts of the wing orange, and keep some parts black.

Money aside, I guess you could get two pre-printed Desertwolf body shells (as long as they come with the wings) or two Vorza wings (if they're right for scale and fit the body posts, although you could redrill the holes and cover the originals with a decal).

You'd then have one iridescent purple, one metallic orange/black and one original black.

Well, I'm still waiting for Modelsport to respond about the pre-painted shell coming with a wing... I did email them on Friday though, so hopefully will reply on Monday.

I'll definitely get a Vorza wing though, they're less than £10 on eBay. If it fits, great.. we have an alternative wing if needed, but the original DW decals don't look like they'll fit on the Vorza wing. well, they might.. but looks like you'd have to do some trimming to the decals.

I was curious about the pre-printed DW body shell/wing and so emailed and got this reply from model sport so at least you know theirs comes with a wing if you need it but might not want to leave it too long if you go that route:

Hiya Martin,

Thanks for the email. Yes the body includes the wing/nose cone.

Being the cheaper option, would be great if the Vorza one fits and is a similar size, maybe though, as you said, a bit of decal trimming needed.

So they've pretty much straight-up told you the pre-painted bodies come with the wing. Well, at least the bodies THEY sell do... which is quite surprising, given the fact the wing is impossible to find separate.

I'll definitely get the Vorza wing and see if it fits. The Vorza is also 1/8 scale, and looks like it uses a similar wing bracket to the DesertWolf... so, a good chance it'll fit. I'll probably try to get one in the next few weeks. If it does fit, at least there's a cheap alternative if the original wing get's damaged or destroyed.

Yes, definitely confirmed about the wing being included with the pre-printed body shell, I copy and pasted the item name and catalogue number in my message.

To be honest, if the model sport stock of the pre-printed body shell has the wing included, they all should, including the ones available from Wheelspin on back order. Whether they're suppliers can actually supply the pre-printed body shell tho, who knows.

Sounds good about the Vorza wing being 1/8th scale and wing bracket being similar to the DW. I see mibi only have one in stock and have the the same one listed on eBay, the others I found are shipped from the US or Australia so high shipping.

Serious Desertwolf question, which way round do you prefer to mount your bodyshell (s)?

So far I've always mounted mine with the more straight down angle at the front but accidentally fitted it the other way round the other day, with the more traditional buggy sloping angle, which looks good too, so now I'm torn!

Posted

I much prefer... and always use... the more slopped angle forward, compared to the steeper angle. Just looks weird that way, The normal buggy look to me looks so much better.

I was curious about whether Wheelspin could really back order the pre-printed DW body shell so sent them an email and just received this reply:

Hi Martin,

I have just looked on our system and the item MV29010 is showing as shadow stock so is in stock with Maverick in the Netherlands.

If we can be of any further help by all means let us know.
