XV-01 servo + Servo Saver or Horn

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I asked about XV-01 in Hop Ups Topic but maybe this way, wider audience will check it.

I am looking for XV-01 servo. I do not have high requirements: around 10 kg and 0.10 - 0.15 s will be fine. One, obvious thing is fact, that it has to fit XV-01. So, if you installed it in your XV-01, please leave comment about model. I will check if it is available in my area.

Servo of first choice is Savox 1251. Unfortunately, I heard that it can be cause of Brown Outs. In my two cars with similar setup which I plan to use in XV-01, I already had some kind of Brown Outs and in that case, I do not want to add part which increase probability of failure. Probably it is somehow related to Radio/ Receiver itself. I read about this on Forums and heard in Popalong RC channel.

In that case, Savox is last manufacturer I will consider.

I checked many, many servos and to be honest, almost all of them will not fit if we compare dimensions to manual.

Electronics:

Sanwa MX-6 + RX R391W

HW1060 ESC

Torque Tuned/ Sport Tuned motor

7.2 Nimh battery

What do you recommend?

PS: I prefer well known brands over cheap Chinese products.

Second Topic:

Servo Saver or just Horn? What do you think? I will run on asphalt, no dirt, jumps etc.

Can I just use that Sanwa or super high end radio is required?

Yep you can use that Sanwa with any radio, its just that you may not be taking full advantage of what it can do.  I wouldn't worry about that though as you don't really need to program them, they are good servos as they are.  I have an M17 and don't bother programming my servos.

I would use a high torque servo saver too.  A good servo means you can use a direct horn without the servo saver, but you don't lose much/any feel by running a decent servo saver and it will help protect the servo.  For some reason if you look at the high end race kits, on-road use servo savers and off-road don't.  I'm not sure why as to me it should be the other way around, but thats just what they come with.

How much torque will be enough? I see some servos which will fit, but they are around 6 kg.

Back in the days people were using 3kg standard servos. I think 6kg - if it is a real world value from a major brand - is plenty. In addition to the torque being much higher these days, digital technology has made servos much more capable of holding the commanded position than before. So I would not be worried about a 6kg servo in a 1/10 scale car.

Which servo are you considering that is 6kg?

JX PDI-4409MG will work with your 1060 ESC. Servos these days, are said to be so good, that a saver is not needed at all. So you can just use the arms that usually comes with a servo.

Although not needed to protect the servo, on XV-01 I have seen a saver advised to protect the plastic steering parts

Any comments on that? Price is acceptable, should fit in chassis. I believe ( hope?) quite low speed and not too much torque, should not be a problem for BEC.

I even found technical data.

  • Running Current (no load): 100mA @6.0V, 120mA @7.4V
  • Stall Current (at locked): 1500mA @6.0 V, 1800mA @7.4V
  • Idle Current: 5mA @6.0V, 5mA @7.4V

1251 model has those numbers two times higher, so probably around limit of BEC.

I know that faster servo is better but to be honest, I have strange steering method and I am afraid, that fast servo would make car twitchy. Currently in two buggies I have 0.15s servos and they are totally fine. On stand it does not look fine but during run is enough.

Thank you! I prefer to buy locally, mainly from ideological reasons. Aliexpress is last place I want to use for shopping.
