Hi all;

assuming I am using NiMH batteries (yes yes I know). does using a brushless motor setup with it makes sense as oposed to using a brushed setup?

thanks?

Yep, it doesn't matter what battery chemistry you use, its all power. Brushless is more efficient than brushed so you will still see gains.

Where NiMH can't keep up is if you add a lot of electronic timing (boost and turbo) in the ESC settings. It gets to the point (quickly) where NiMH can't  supply the required power and the car doesnt get any faster

I don't race so I run mostly NiMH on all cars expect for those that cannot fit the standard sizes, or the chassis is just too heavy to start.  They are a mix of brushed and brushless setups.  Brushless is very efficient so you will get longer run times vs brushed and more torque too.  Just need to gear it very low vs brushed motor setup.

Only needing to maintain (mostly) the bearing oil on brushless setup is a huge win.  Brushed motors are great for slower cars imho as they have that very analog throttle modulation, given one uses the right ESC like the 1060's.

Especially on a car like the rere MID, I would only consider brushless setup (LeMans 240S/Gold)

sadly I cannot afford to by the LeMans 240S/Gold - at this point in time its a little on the expensive side for me... but for sure its a viable upgrade at a certain point...

 NiMH is another way to go, heck I still run vintage Nicads appropriate for the vehicle. NiMH doesn't have the memory issues of Nicads and you don't have to balance the cells or worry if they'll burn your house down.... And sometimes the extra weight actually helps. Depending on your chassis you can run 6, 7 or 8 cells etc. as there's only a 1.2V difference, not 3.7(nominal) so you have more tuning options. What's the sense of having too much power? I recently bought a Traxxas 7-cell Nimh to replace the Traxxas 3s 5300 monster in my Sledge, now I can use all the throttle. Yet, now we have smart systems so even the regular Lipo is obsolete!

It'll work, the motors don't care where the voltage comes from,  you'd probably get some rotation, if you used a lemon some copper and zinc!.

You just wouldn't get the full power and rpm the motor would be capable of, with the lower voltage and amp discharge of a Nimh.

I have a few brushless setups that I run on Nimh (one even has its original molex plug!).

If I could (as in if manufacturers didn't charge an arm and a leg), I'd convert my fleet to brushless. Brushless is more efficient, more powerful with the right motor, and it requires less maintenance. Until then, I have a pile of hot-stock brushed motors to use up.

The only area where I prefer brushed is in crawlers, brushed motors have just a tiny bit more low end control, and you're not going to burn up a high turn brushed motor in a crawler.
