hi all

I have clicked the purchase button on the optima mid 22 :)

are there things that are not in the box? do i need oil, grease etc or there's enough in the kit?

i am also looking for a servo that fits well the performs well (but not above 50$). there are so many options i have no idea what to take. for my tamiya I took a crappy one from aliexpress and it doesn work well IMO.

10x!

Congratulations. You're in for a treat. It is a beautiful build.

I just completed mine last month. I believe the kit had everything I needed except blue threadlock for a few metal on metal parts.

For servo, I opted for a low-profile servo even though it doesn't matter (a full-height servo fits fine, and in fact the face of the servo is in the same position no matter what, so I just picked the low-profile because I like how "tucked" it looks inside the chassis). I used to buy very expensive servos but over the last two years I've switched completely to the amazon specials: https://www.amazon.com/Readytosky-Degree-Standard-Digital-Steering/dp/B088H5369M/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1DOOVM7ZXTMQ4&keywords=low+profile+servo&qid=1701675691&sprefix=low+profile+servo%2Caps%2C137&sr=8-5. They work perfectly and seem to be lasting just fine.

Congrats @gkatz!  B)

a. If you don't mind the servo only being maginally faster than a basic servo, I've tried the JX servo and it's fine for the most part, but too slow for me (their specs are inaccurate and my guess is about 0.15/sec 60degrees @6v)   Amazon has these for like $15:    JX Servo PDI-4409MG

b.  I run this JX servo on my slower cars (7-8 of them) and they have a nice fast response that sort of rivals my Savox.. however, they are a bit large and not sure if it would fit properly in the MID... maybe someone has tried it.  (my guess spec is around 0.10/sec 60 degrees @6V)     Amazon has these for like $15 as well:   JX Servo PDI-5508MG

The above 2 were recommended to us by @OoALEJOoO

I run the Savox 1252MG on my MID's (0.07/sec 60degrees @ 6V).  Honestly servo's are one of the most critical parts of a performance car so you don't want to cheap out.. but that is just me.  I mean 1252MG's are on the cheaper side..     Before any hopups on your MID, I suggest saving that money to get proper electronics to match the car.   My electronics is pretty basic but works well..  Savox 1252MG, XR10 Justock ESC, LeMans 240S 15.5BL.  I run a Spektrum system on my off-roaders so, SR215.

GL with your build!

thanks @smirk-racing @Willy iine
i think from your options and my basic knowledge I can probably start with a HW1060 and a jx low profile servo
JX Servo PDI-4409MG assuming its ok for the mid. I can alway upgrade if needed in a later stage

the folks at amain suggested a reedy 40USD esc but TBH, is there any reason not to get a HW1060 at half the price?

the engine will have to probably be a sport tuned for starters....
it will take some time for all the parts to arrive so I will probably start building only "next year"...

@gkatz  One thing to remember is that stores are also monitoring their inventory levels, so it's really up to you, but I would just stick with the 1060 and your Tamiya SuperStock motors for now.  I run the 1060 with the Tamiya BZ on a few of my cars (XV01, Egress, etc etc) and they work just fine.. and for me, plenty quick.   B)

Are you okay with soldering?  Because sometimes you may need to extend the wires.  I usually just put a new bullet connector (Tamiya's snap connector) on a new pair of motor wires and replace them completely when I can't reach the ESC.

@Willy iine @smirk-racing and any one else interested

I undertand the wing in the kit come pre-colored? (white)

if yes, can you please state which tamiya color (PS spray cans) match the best? there are multuple shades of white in the spray cans.

thanks!

I just used PS-white on the body.  And the wing is a white hard plastic wing. 👍

I assume this would be PS-1 in Tamiya-speak, then. :)

@gkatz - put your geographic location (sort of, doesn't have to be exact) in your profile, that'll make it easier to figure out if someone can help you. I imagine you spend a lot of time under a palm tree on a remote island in the south seas, but that's only a guess. :)
