The last new ESC I purchased was from Novak, so its been awhile since I've been in the market. I run my "faster" mod Clods with 15T HPI Firebolts and an 8.4v nimh battery. What dual motor ESC will work in this application? Nothing too pricey or fancy is required. Thanks for any insight.

Problem is the 880 has a limit of 24T when using 2 motors.

The 24t limit is for 4s / 12s Nimh!!

I'm using 15t firebolts in my Bullhead, with the older 860 (880 is 80 amp, my 860 is 60amp) on 2s and its been fine.

An 8.4v Nimh is around the same as a 2s ,but with less discharge current, so I'm 99.9% certain, an 880 will handle it no bother, with its 12t limit.

(Side note, I've run my 15t firebolt Novafox with a 1060 , on 3s a few times and it's been sound , quick, but a smelly motor, and the esc took it without issue).

Er no, in bold at the top "KV Rating/T Count for single motor use, double when using two motors." The note at the bottom "When Driving 2 Motors Simultaneously the Turns/T Count of the Motor Must Be Increased Accordingly." is lifted straight from the 880 instructions as well.

So for single is 12T, two motors is 24T. I think the clue is both the 880 and 1080 has the same 80A/400A output. The 880 does not have double the power output, so the motors needs to be halved.

Doh!...🤦‍♂️

I'm still running a pair of 15t firebolts off an 860 on 2s, so an 880 will be fine...

How about running two single motor ESCs? You can run them off a Y lead if you only have a two channel radio, or if you have a spare channel and the appropriate mixing options you can set it up to switch between front wheel drive rear wheel drive and four-wheel drive, giving you what amounts to an electronic dig. I have one of my WR-01 twin motor trucks set up this way, and it is a lot of fun to play with the drive options!

Your options for hotter motors in a clod tend to be dual ESC's, or a HW880.  Yes, on paper the HW880 is not rated for it, but LOTS of guys run them with no issues.  Does that mean it's guaranteed to work for you?  No.  But it might.  You could always wire in an external BEC and a capacitor pack to lessen the strain on the ESC if you did go that route...

There is the option of grabbing a second hand Traxxas EVX2 esc, I’ve been using those in my Clods for years.
Maybe not everyone’s favourite but have served me well on beaches and in the snow and never failed yet.
