Things that annoy you the most...

I am laughing. He is on my hide list as well!

There is a lot of terrible advice on YT from folks who are just figuring the hobby out. I guess that is "what annoys me the most", people trying to extract an income from the hobby using the tools [that our dystopian society puts] at their disposal, such as YouTube. We are all trying to have fun and there they come, trying to make money. Meanwhile the hobby shops and on-road tracks close one after the other.

The real good advice and knowledge is right here, on TC. Dispended all free of charge by folks who actually enjoy rambling about how they do things.

Japanese sellers on EBay that list the same kit and photos three different times with three different price points.

I think it's a lack of new talent that kills tracks, the racing side of the hobby seems more interested in extracting money from existing participants, vs getting newcomers involved, at least in the States.

But you are right about the poor advice on youtube, and the large amount of money-grubbers who'll say anything for a freebie.

Yeah! What's the point with that? I don't get it...

Ha ha ha, OK that may be a thing of personal sympathy or even the absence of the same. I am observing something during the last years, YT videos with somekind of astonished or just idiotic grimaces in the thumbnails. And I can't help myself, but I try to avoid those videos or channels. The serios youtubers do not need to do such a BS.

I would assume "confusing the market" to "fish" for the not so experienced buyer who thinks he is getting a bargain by clicking on the lowest listing? I am annoyed by something similar ... in the motorcycle parts section getting pages and pages with the same item with the same price by one or two sellers.

Rain and crappy weather.

First day off in forever, went to charge up the cars. Raining now - so the concrete will be unusable, and the BMX track and gravel pitch very slidy and dirty. Might try and pop out later today if I can, but not looking hopeful.

I don't really mind youtubers, it's like people bashing a traxxas to death, watch or don't. If you don't watch it doesn't effect you.

I think Kev, although usually inevitable, doesn't smash them on purpose purpose (except hitting the block flat out....), where whistlindiesel just gets a lovely truck, smashes it into posts, and then crushes it with a Caterpillar...😡. However, I'm adding to the problem, by watching it, (similar to the short video things, where they state, if you save $1 a day for a year, you'd have $3000000 by the end, complete nonsense, but the modern world will tell them, so gets millions of comments and views = cash 🤷‍♂️) . The most watched vid on my YouTube channel, is my Marui Ninja running a Castle 3800kv on 3s...

I have just checked three videos of Whistlindiesel.

World is going in the wrong direction. Really.

The irony being @Phil_H started his channel, with his little mini city, doing the speedruns on this forum..😬

(But doesn't look like he's been on here, for over a year...☹️)

Unfortunately, yes

He's not daft though, watched the interview with him, and his team, on what is chosen for content, car colours for maximum YouTube exposure etc (seemingly Red gets more hits)

The older that I get, the less that I pay attention to the youtube rabble. No sense in wasting my valuable time fussing about media/popculture/first world problems.

If anything, I find myself going back to books and TV when I'm not working on my RCs or being worked on by the pets.

Bashing.

I really, really do not understand where is fun part of running expensive model in e.g. Skatepark, just to jump/ crash it and break it in really short time.

I think it depends on what your idea of bashing is, as noted by......

I think the term means different things to different people.  Perhaps we need to blaze the trail and make a new term.

To me, since I've been in the hobby, 'bashing' has meant 'running an RC for fun in a non-scale or non-competitive manner'.  It doesn't specifically mean (but can include) launching it as far as possible off a skate ramp, although personally I don't do this.

I think the rise in popularity of indestructible 6S trucks has shifted the meaning more towards skate park destruction, and maybe opened up a space for a new term.

^^^THIS.  I also gre up where "bashing" was just essentially driving without intent, and seeing how far you could push a vehicle.  I never aimed to break something, but if you ever catch some air with a buggy or MT and think, "I wonder if I could jump a bit higher/further?", then you're slipping into bashland... ha!

Using definition above, Bashing is totally fine. I just do not understand that need to destroy things.

I think there are two points here to counter with:

  1. The intent doesn't have to be breakage in order for breakage to occur.  Here @skom25, I toss back at you the "other" hobby of being a cyclist (of which type you are, I'm not sure).  I too have been a cyclist most of my life (MTB, Trials, Gravel, FAT, etc...), and over the years I have destroyed MANY bikes and parts without the goal of doing so.  Landed a drop wrong?  New frame time.  Misjudged a bunnyhop over some curbs?  Time for a new rear wheel.  Through they eyes of some, maybe I WAS bashing and riding too hard, but to me, I was just pushing my limits a bit, and stuff went wrong.  In cycling it's part of the sport... so maybe in RC it can be too?
  2. Some people like to break things.

It is fun, think of those smash up rooms kind of activity. However, after watching some skatepark video, I think the fun is not in destroying things, but can you not destroy things. Can you nail that 10m jump and drive away. Same as human on skateboard, can you nail that back flip without breaking your bones? Do it successfully and it is very satisfying.

^^^This.

Same thing with all hobbies. People gatekeeping and telling others how to enjoy the hobby “properly”…

Thumbs up to that!

I watched a whisky tasting thing one time where the discussion was around how to properly serve/drink/enjoy your whisky.  The guy commented, that the proper way to drink your whisky was however you enjoyed to drink your whisky.

In the early 2000's me and a mate were running his Traxxas T-maxx. He was insecure about nitro engines and I was racing nitro planes at the time, so he would actually knock on my door and ask me to join him. It was insanely fun and although by himself he would be very conservative (having paid the bill) under my terrible influence we would launch the truck off higher and higher jumps and drops. We did damage the body but I don't actually remember breaking parts. The irony was that later that summer his dad took the T-Maxx to an empty parking lot and did prolonged, full throttle 'speed runs' and you can guess what happened to the engine. A Traxxas engine replacement was not available and a new OS engine was more money that the whole RTR T-Maxx set. So he never drove that truck again. We were bashing without knowing it! I wouldn't do that today, preferring the challenge of driving clean lines on improvised tracks. A frustrating challenge sometimes but so satisfying when you nail it just right. There really is a facet of RC for everyone.

In the late 80's of the last millennium we (admittedly) did the same. We were young and inexperienced. I fried several ESCs because they couldn't cope with the contemporary racing motors (Reedy Pink Dot for example). Electronics and batteries are a real blessing today in comparison to what we had back at that time. Spares and aftermarket parts even did not arrive as quick as today. Keep in mind, I am talking about Germany ... we were always grudging when we (luckily) got our hands on an issue of RCCA and saw what the guys on the other side of the Atlantic could get. Now the world has become a lot smaller.

I'm from that time too... (got into the Hobby in 1981) The Novak Rooster was the first "basher" ESC that could handle hotter motors... and that didn't appear until 1989! But, Trinity Monster Motors were a lot of fun, without killing the ESC.

Batteries..... yeah.  900 MAh, the "big one" was 1200 MAh!! 🙄 there was the Tamiya 4000 MAh D-cell pack, that fit the original Bruiser.... but WHO could afford one!? And never forget, those were all NiCd!! SHORT runtimes, would get a "memory" where if you didn't fully discharge them... they wouldn't fully charge!! 😳🤬🤬🤬

I remember when NiMH Batteries came out. We thought those were heaven sent!! No memory issues, longer runtimes, and up to 2400 MAh!! (1996, that was a BIG deal.)

And OMG!! Do you remember how much a set of ball bearings cost back then!? I had a Blazing Blazer (SO sorry I sold it!). After paying $245.00 US for it (a fortune in 1982!!), I couldn't afford bearings. 😞

I looked into this and one of the sellers told me he is working as an agent for other ads that are domestic Japan only.  The seller does not actually have the item and this is why they say to check stock first and can take up to 5 business days to ship.

After the guy takes your order, he places an order to the seller in Japan to ship to his house in Japan, then re-packs as needed, and ships to you.  He has several eBay accounts apparently and scatters his ads.

That makes sense because I did try to buy one thing back in the summer and they said the item was no longer in stock after I completed it. So I figured they're all just a scam.

Yeah, they are fishy indeed... however, they are not totally scams as I have bought several from these kinds of sellers and items all arrived fine.  I think the best way would be to send them a message asking to check stock.  Then place order.

I believe it is called "Drop Shipping" or at least some kind of it.

I guess that's what the prospect of money and fame does to a person... oftentimes, as a person grows more and more successful, they begin to forget their roots, their humble beginnings which set them on the track to success. The knowledge. The people who took time out of their day to help them. All of these things get washed away and replaced with greed and hunger; a passionate desire to get more views, to make more money, to get more subscribers. I'd say this is what happened to Phil and Kevin, unfortunate as it may be.

Dunno what's happened tbh, maybe uploading a vid to your YouTube channel everyday, takes its toll.

The forum still gets  a mention though-

Yeah.... same thing happened to Gavin (RCKicks). He just proudly did a Tamiya Cars vs Skatepark Bash video, last week....

It's likely a serious grind, but not a grind that I can sympathize with given that youtubers choose a life of pumping out content, vs getting real jobs.

I'll save everyone 16 minutes of time and sum that video up:

1. HIIIII WELCOME TO RCKICKS!!!! Blah blah blah gotta talk to fill out algorithm.

2. Ramps a Dark Impact and breaks the back off, there are already articles (with much more effort put into them) that go into the DF-03s weaknesses.

3. Ramps a Grasshopper ar....no wait, begs the viewer to click a thing (this is why I like TV, no begging!)...NOW he jumps it a bit, and snaps the rear suspension mount.

4. Blah blah blah gotta talk to fill out algorithm.

5. Fixes Dark Impact.

6. RC Toys break when they smack hard rigid edges of concrete, big shock.
