What's your current favorite car category?

Recommended Posts

Last year when I got back on RC, I only wanted cars that can run on grass / dirt .... a.k.a. monster truck.
Just because those are common environments around me.

Recently that has changed quite a bit... After getting an M08 so that I can practice onroad driving to get better at driving rather than just bashing which led to acquisition of several more M chassis (3x M05s, 2xM06) since I liked them so much. Converted one for rally and yes it is not super capable, but this little thing brings me joy...

I know I cannot run onroad cars as freely around me, but that didn't stop me from getting more onroad cars... (FF01/02/03, TL01LA which I plan to build soon)... (and yes. influenced hugely by Buyee)
I love it...

What's your favorite car category at the moment?

What is my favorite depends on season. In the summer I am hooked on M-Chassis. I started last year with an M-05 I got in 2013 (because of the body and I thought it would be nice running it in the parc ferme at VW meetings after tracktime). Now I have 3.

For the rest when it is wet, snow or other sorts of grimy conditions I like a rally car; my XV-01.

For carefree running and fun with the kids all year around in all conditions: Buggy.

Mine would be in this order:

Rally (tarmac & dirt) > On-Road/touring > Crawl/Trailing.

Buggies. Enough off road clearance to zip around the garden without the bulk of a monster truck. Actually wish I had somewhere to run a TC-01 though!

Actually that is a good point about the bulk. It doesn’t matter much if i want to run next to my house… but it becomes a hassle if i need to bring it somewhere else.

Trucks.

Monster trucks, stadium or sct and trophy trucks and other real life off roaders.

Not such a fan of buggies as they don't really exist in real life, outside of the earlier Tamiya types and have now become thier own thing.

Buggies all the way for me ever since the late 70s with the tamiya rough rider (although the ford ranger was my first ever real RC strangely) any brand as long as its quality!

Rally of course. 😁 But I'm thinking about getting a buggy, since there's a track nearby

Probably monster trucks for me.  I say probably, because my crawlers are getting the most use right now because I take them on long walks, but ask me what I'd want to do on any given day, it's get out my monster trucks and go fly them over jumps.  Except my garden isn't really big enough and there's not many places I can go before I get bored of them on my own.  I guess I wish there were more solid axle monster truck fans around here to do some friendly racing or freestyling.

For me probably road rally cars at the moment, as that's what's getting the most use.

Other than than, I like 2wd buggies (scale looking) and scale crawlers... which reminds me, I must build another scale truck.

I'd happily be up for some solid axle monster trucking if I was near Bath....

I always cycle between buggies and monster trucks, usually of the classic variety. With the intro of the BBX and falling TD4 prices, I might bend a little bit on that last part. I was doing 4wd buggies in the fall, but feel a shift towards monster trucks as things get colder atm.

This about where I'm at too, slower but robust "old school" stuff meant to be fun with cheap brushed motors and NiMH, something low maintenance so I can spend more time with my family, less on making adjustments/shopping for pinion gears in a weird pitch/etc.

I've tried on-road, and while it's been fun, I find that none of the chassis (save for scale oddities like the XV-01 or M chassis) have the same "dynamic" qualities of an off-roader.

Off-roaders lean, transfer tons of weight, go over jumps, roll over if you slip up, and don't pick up every pebble in the road. Less maintenance and more challenging to drive, and of course need absolutely nothing to be "rally" capable.

Most on-roaders short of M-chassis, XV, (and whatever you classify a WPL truck as), drive like slot cars with a servo...except slot cars are a whole lot cheaper to get into!

For me it depends on the aspect of the hobby.

For driving, I find nothing beats the purity and precision of an F1 or similar pan style car.

For building, it has to be a scaler, as there is so much to them. Even once you have the chassis fully sorted with all of its links and drive bits, and the body nicely trimmed and painted, there is still weathering to do, scale accessories to make and add, functioning extras like lights and winches to figure out, obstacles and courses to build, etc.

For display, I thoroughly enjoy the appearance of a nicely proportioned and correctly liveried touring or rally car.

Its got to be buggies for me. Versatile for backyard running and fun to race.

A bonus is that you can buy a few different kits and they are different compared to onroad kits where they are identical except for the body. Obviously this doesn't always apply (TT02B and DT03 I'm looking at you) but it mostly does. The Hotshot is a great example, so many iterations which are all different in their own way, even if they aren't as good as the Boomerang.

Also, the Boomerang is a buggy.

For me, crawler/scale trucks or rally are always swapping for the top spot for driving, but building rally or touring cars will always be my favorite. I love building up a fresh on road chassis !

Monster trucks for me, specifically with chevron tires.

I have a (1st love car) Marui Big Bear, a Himoto basher Bear, the Big Bear themed Clodbuster, the Duke Nukem Mighty Foot Juggernaut and a lunchbox wheeled Grasshopper. 2 More Maruti Big Bears are hidden somewhere in storage awaiting better times.

Buggy, mostly 2wd at that.  Had a Hornet, then Boomerang, Then Kyosho Ultima Pro when I was a kid.  Falling back into this rabbit hole a couple years ago it was a DT-03 Neo Fighter, DT-02 Sand Viper, and a TD2.  I did build a GT-01 Countach and a MST CMX, but really it is the buggies.  I keep eyeing the Dirt Master & BBX, maybe a TT-02BR, and maybe a G6-01?  If I could find a Kyosho Nexxt cheap I'd pick that up just because.

Anything representing or replicating Group C cars is a winner for me. But the options for running them are severely limited.

2wd buggies for me. 1/10. Possibly outnumbers every other type in my collection.
