Hi all

Just had a talk with a friend with a different hobby but apparently he 3D prints many parts he needs...

So I was wondering, is there a well known parts Catalog for 3D printing in the RC car hobby?

Thanks

I get stuff from Shapeways from time to time.

This looks like the printing service. Was wondering is there is a Catalog of scanned parts pr something. I don't need anything but definitely curious

I don't think there is a specific catalog for RC, but thingverse, printables & maybe pinshape has lots of stuff. Replacement & custom parts people have designed.

yeggi.com is worth a visit too, it'll search places like thingiverse, printables and others, both free and paid in one go. If you get into 3D printing, which I highly recommend as it's a lot of fun, at some point you will probably want to learn to 3D model. The basics aren't too hard and there are a number free programs out there to get you started.

nice one with plenty of things.

many time people are hunting plastic parts for their vintage RCs. as long as yo are not a purist, why not 3D print what you need? seems like this should be very big for rare parts. instead of hunting for a year you can 3D print (as long as someone took the time and effort to model of course)

yeah, its getting there. Options for 3D printing and modelling are now more widely available to the average person. While not every RC car is covered there are lots of files available now, both paid and free, plus there are many files that are designed to improve cars. You are even seeing people like @silvertriple bring unreleased cars to reality. I expect this trend to only continue as 3D printers and especially 3D scanning become even more affordable and easier for the average person to use.

Thanks to highlight this to my attention :-)...

Lot of things to say here:

- while you may find parts on shapeways, they will be super expensive (this is by far the most expensive printing service from all the quotations I've done). This is the main reason most of my parts are not on shapeways

- you may find part files on cults3d which is the only place where we can upload part files without paying for a monthly fee for a shop (not like myminifactory), and free parts on Printables and Thingiverse. They still need to be printed, but there is plenty of options out there for that

- yeggi is an aggregator, but you won't see many of the files available on the real sources (not sure why)

- scan is not good enough for anything that needs to be assembled with original parts such as a gearbox or a chassis. And it's actually a huge amount of work to refine the parts post scanning. And if the part you scan is used, it's also going to include all the usage bent and other bad things...

- last, it takes a lot of things and time to model the parts: first and for most, you need a sample of the car to work it out, and some times, more that just one because of broken parts, which is one of the reasons you may not find every parts available as file...

- there is also people who are totally against 3d printed parts on vintage cars, I've got banned from some groups and forums for that

- when the part file is free, don't forget there was a huge work behind, and consider contributing by a donation to the file creator: that would fuel his motivation and cars to model are actually bought most of the times, so it helps as well...

- there is no secret as well on the materials and printing processes : good quality parts are done using powder base printer and it means online service and comes at cost... So if you find a car with printed parts, ask for the material and how it was printed : filament base printing don't justify you spend a lot to get that repaired car...

I'll watch this thread and will probably add few other cents in the bucket...
