Congrats Moosey [^][^], does this mean we are going to see another quality job like the Lara Croft Tomb Raider one?

Well pleased with my result there, even beat Scoobyben which surprised me. Thanks to all who voted for me..

Nigeninja, I say you're right, for the next compo it would be handy to have something more generic which could be done with any of the models, but it's probably difficult to do something which could cover rigs, tanks, dump trucks, touring cars, trucks AND buggies [:0]

Maybe the solution is just MORE competitions, with MORE prizes, MORE frequently [;)]

Sounds like Chris already has that in hand though [:D].

How about a rally themed photo comp with one of those luuuuuverly re-release Lancia Integrale's up for grabs..... <hint> <hint>

Oh yes lots more to come - got the next 9 sorted already!![:D][:D]

As for themes, they will vary depending on what we are giving away, what pops into my head, what people suggest etc etc etc. One thing is for sure though, I will pick themes which encourage/make people to go out and take great new photos, rather than recycle ones from their showroom.

Chances are not everyone will be able to enter every competition - thats just life I'm afraid, but there will always be another one on another theme later following. At the end of the day, if you look back through most of the competitions most people could enter most of them (hardly any are limited to a particular class of model) - it just needs a little more effort and creative thinking [;)] Take this one for example, top 2 places went to none wheelie models.

I think at the end of the day the voters go for quality photos, the fact a model is pulling a wheelie is not enough to get a win if the car is so small you can hardly see it. Also if you model is taken sitting outside your house, next to dustbins and other assorted distractions is always going to do less well then someone that takes the time to think about the shot, find the right environment and most importantly get the model as close to full frame as possible.

Right who wants a NIB Hornet? Watch this space.[:D]

<nods head sagely>

Tamiyas catching some "air" sounds like a good idea - not too model specific and everyone can enter, plus it kind links in with the flying / Hornet / insect theme maybe.....

Its starting to sound like an advert for Orange Wednesdays [;)]

i would like to make a suggestion for future rules on these comps.

I think it should be a NEW photo and not a recycled one from archives, therefore making it a current car that you Presently own.

Lets face it, Anyone can rake up a load of old car piccys and i dont think thats fair to the other members that go to all the effort of getting out and making new stuff. It would be nice to keep things fresh and not see the same old photos turning up in these competitions time and again.

The original idea behind the 'members awards' was

- to encourage new photos

- to highlight great photos

- to take better photos

And as much as personally I like to see new photos, we won't have a rule which prevents people submitting old photos. A good photo is a good photo at the end of the day, and it would be wrong to have a competition for the "best photo of a jump" for example, if the best photo was actually a photo that we just didn't allow to enter because it was in a showroom before the competition was announced. (and it would be virtually impossible for us to check anyway as people could delete old photos and just re-enter them)

I think we will have a rule though, that no photo which has made it to the top 10 before in any of the rounds can be entered again.

Entry rules are not the important bit though as getting into the competition is the smallest part of actually winning it. That comes down to the voters and based on previous rounds, they tend to go for quality - which is just wahat we want. (see my previous post about what makes a good competition winner)

I also don't see a problem with using pictures you already have as long as they are not previous competition winners.

At the end of the day in the voting style comps I think you will find people tend to vote for the newer stuff anyway rather than things they have seen before. Personally I can't say I have noticed "old stuff" coming up repeatedly, certainly a lot of the same people entering, but maybe thats just because they take better pictures, or make more of an effort? [;)]

From a "spread the prizes around" point of view it might not be a bad idea to perhaps restrict members to one prize win in a 12 month period? I know its unlikely the same person will win twice, but it could happen, and it would be nice to see the prizes go to different people imho.

I personally think it is only fair to let people win multiple times if they are putting in the effort in. At the end of the day, varying the nature of the competition should ensure a variety of winners anyway.

I think the current rules are as fair as they can possibly be, and the quality + effort put into a shot will be what attracts the votes at the end of the day.

It would be quite good if the entries could be shown anonymously though, that would avoid the possibility of votes being biased because of who made the entry rather than the quality of the entry itself..

Also, removing the voting box once I've voted and replacing it with a note to say I've voted would be a good idea, as you can't be sure whether your votes have been counted correctly. I've not tried clicking it again though, I daresay there's some sort of message then to say you've already voted?

Anyway, enough talk of rules - when's the next compo, what's the prize and what's the theme [:D]

Here here Chris!

[^][^]

I'd like to just add, My Winning photo was no 'OLD' photo. It was taken at the time this comp started. And, It was taken with thought & care about how good it would look, As are ALL my photo's.

I suggest that if anyone is complaining about old photo's that have been taken with lots of effort & thought. They need to look at the quality of there own.

If ya want a good photo, Get the camera down low, close & take the pic yourself, Don't rely on someone you just throw the camera to.

I've got a saying for it 'Camera knees' They don't bend, But they should!!!![;)]

All this talk about old & new photo's is just daft!

Like Chris said, WE ALL LIKE & NEED TO SEE GOOD PHOTO'S, Simple as that!

well as from what i can see and the comments of most members this seems to have change from a wheelie competition to a who took the best pic. so i suggest you get a professinal to take your pics, when it was listed as a wheelie competition, i presumed wrongly. was a car or motor bike popping up on the rear wheels through power with no outside assistance

Posted

It was a wheelie competition, 'wheelie' as I defined in the first post - the definition was deliberately broad so that people with none wheelie cars could enter.

I think all that people have tried to point out since, is that once your entry is in then, as all the entries forefilled the rules, then it comes down to the photo and better photos will get more votes.

At the end of the day, the biggest bit of Tamiyaclub is the photo database of our members models, and the idea behind the member awards was to encourage better photos. I think its done that, if you look over time the quality of photos and movies has definately got better.

well moosey i know ba didnt mean your photo being old but there where a few entered and this was only a general comment as one commented he dug his out of his archive. so until i become a professional photographer i will refain from entering lol

I couldn't agree more Chris. At the end of the day once the photo satisfies the rules it's down to the visitors to vote using their own criteria. If they like to see a wheelie model doing another wheelie with the driver dressed as Barbie then fair enough, if they prefer vintage photos or photos of a 3-speed doing a wheelie which you don't see everyday then that's their choice as they vote.

I personally don't see the problem with the age of any photo, what's the difference between looking at a car doing a wheelie yesterday or the same model 10 years ago doing a wheelie? The same car, the same photographic technique just a different day. Some of my best and most coveted photos are from 15 years ago. Each time i take my runners out I try to take good photos and upload them here for people to enjoy, it doesn't take a competition to motivate me to do that and the same should not be true of others. Amazing how much effort all of a sudden does get put in once there's something up for grabs. It is a club after all.

To be fair to Moosey he's been very modest because his picture was taken during one of our 3 speed get-togethers and was not taken with the competition in mind at all. It was just a good picture and one that fitted the rules of the comp. I can think of nobody better to have won the prize since his contribution to the club is obvious time and time again.

hi not meaning to nit pick but if its like a situation shot where the model could actually be static i would say quality of picture counts but on an action shot which this was i think it shouldve been more on the content of the pic not quality as many people cant afford to buy a camera with a high shutter speed ergo poor quality pics = no win , to be honest i entered the comp only to make the numbers up as to behonest i didnt want a wild willy as im not keen on any of the wheelie cars apart from the lunch box i had predicted that moosey would win before voting started shoulda put a bet on it , my prediction was based that his was undoubtly the best quality pic and wasnt an old pic(oh and obvious popularity lol as per stevo309s comment ) hey chris could you tell me if i came last as that was actually my goal as i used a striker which is prolly the least liked car going lol

Posted

Nope you didn't come last - sorry.

Blaming the camera is an easy option and its true, that you can increase your chances by using a better camera but its far the smallest part of taking a great photo. Its about thinking about it, surrounds, content - static shot or not all this is true.

These are some shots I took over 2 yrs ago with a camera that was 2 years old at that time

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=9082&id=1

(I'm not saying they are the greatest in the world just as an example) You can pick up sub £100 pound camera now which will have better resolutions and features.

What a lot of people miss is that the showroom images are 800 x 600 max, I think you would struggle to find a camera that had that as its top resolution (or even its lowest), so that actually gives you lots of scope for cropping your images. I think this is one of the most important steps, it gives you chance to frame everything and also makes the area of interest much 'bigger'

The other thing I always do to increase my chances is take loads and loads of pictures. I'm now fortunate enough to have a nice camera but I can still take rubbish pictures with it and do do the majority of the time. At kidderminster recently I shot about 1000 images, after I got rid of all the ones that were rubbish or just plain average I was left with about 150, out of those I was probably only really pleased with about 20. Just playing the law of averages by taking more you increase you chances[:)]

I'm not having a go at anyone for taking bad photos, I think all that people are doing here is trying to offer advice on how to take better ones, which has got to be a good thing.

taking a bad pic in my case is a valid 1 (a) i only have the use of my left hand (:) not many people if any make a genuinly easy to hold and left handed camera that isnt reasonably priced and my pics were taken from video (digital vid) and all my camera allows is 640x480 so max doesnt leave room for croping lol
