Generic HTD-3M belts to replace Tamiya belts?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

It's getting harder and harder to find Tamiya belts for discontinued cars such as the TA-05. I was browsing ebay and found HTD-3M belts that are easily & cheaply available in virtually every tooth count. They have the same 3mm pitch as Tamiya belts with the only caveat that are a bit wider and therefore require longitudinal cutting (not a big deal). I'm not sure if the tooth shape is a 100% match though but seems close enough.

For example, to replace TA-05v2 belts (54045), a HTD-3M 342mm (114 tooth):

Does somebody here in Tamiyaclub has had experience with these? Would be great to hear some thoughts before pulling the trigger :). Thanks!

Good timing!

I've spent the last couple of days looking precisely for TA05v2 belts! Mine are brand new and not been run yet (body is not started yet), but I just want some spares for when I do.

RC cars use STS (S3M mentioned earlier) profile, not HTD. Belts are manufactured as a continuous sleeve, so belt suppliers can provide any width you want.

I don't personally use custom belts, but they are quite common in rally racing builds and work without issues.

@Ghostpig @Honza Thank you for the info!

I'll get the S3M belts off eBay.

A local shop nearby does have the HTD-3M belts in stock. Do you think there would by any problems if these are used instead of S3M? Noise or maybe more pulley wear?

They wouldn't mesh properly, pitch is the same, but shape of teeth is quite different - I found some pictures on Google that show the difference.

@Honza Thanks. Indeed, they are different tooth shape although the schematics you linked are not to scale. In reality they are much more similar. Since it was just $3 and I really prefer to support local shops, I went ahead and bought an HTD-3M belt and compared it to the original Tamiya belt from a XV-01. Black HTD-3M, brown Tamiya XV-01 reinforced:

The HTD-3M is a tiny bit taller and rounder, but this is minimal. Rubber is compliant so I guess a mismatch in mesh wouldn't be as harsh as with metal gears. I will still go with S3M but at the same time wonder if one could get away with HTD-3M if needed-be. Perhaps add one tooth-count, or loosen the belt to compensate for the small extra height.

EDIT: If all fails, then the ages-old pantyhose method might work!

@OoALEJOoO I think that the "rounder" part might be the issue, with the belt skipping on the sprocket. But with low power, it might be fine.

Great topic. I have ordered some S3M belts on the back of this thread -

342mm to replace cracked TA05 standard belt
345mm for my TA05 with Square RC Counter-steer centre pulley - the belt is really hard to get hold of now, but this should be a like-for-like
525mm for TA03 spares

We should create a list of common belt sizes / tooth count for the archives and future reference...

Great info. Is that for the TA03S ?

Just measured the TA03 and its 564mm 188 teeth or there about's, if somebody can confirm?

@ChrisRx718, @Tobyone The info I've got about chassis belts is:

  • TA-03RS: 175T (525mm), hard to get (16245003 for the rere, 53297 and 49103 reinforced). 4mm wide.
  • TA-05: 114T (342mm), which appear to be the IFS/v2 and low-friction variants (54045 and 54170). The stock one seems to be 113T (339mm) which is one tooth shorter (51210). I guess the 114T have more slack, or maybe get adjusted via the tensioner (?). All are 3mm wide.
  • TA-06 front: 58T (174mm) (16244017 and 54144 TRF version). 3mm wide.
  • TA-06 rear: 101T (303mm) (51671). 3mm wide.
  • XV-01: 191T (573mm). These are still easily found (51512 regular, 54448 reinforced). 3mm wide.

Not sure about other flavors of TA-03s.

EDIT: Added part numbers.

EDIT 2: Corrected typo.
