The XM-01 fanbase or general info on this new pro chassis 58738

Recommended Posts

I have just put in a pre order with Tamico for the all new 4WD M chassis from Tamiya the XM-01pro chassis. I have bought a Carten M210R and a 3Racing M4 in 2023 only because Tamiya had no 4WD M chassis to go with my M-05 and M-08.

Both 4WD "m's" are still to build so it won't be another duo-build but I do feel a first triple build thread coming. :D

There's a lot less info this year on the new cars from Tamiya than last year IMO. I'd especially like to get more info about how to get the 3 different wheelbases and keep the dustcover as is.

In the few images (no running footage yet!) you can see the mounting points at the rear of the chassis which I think are used for the (shown?) 210mm wheelbase and the 225mm wheelbase. For 239mm wheelbase I suspect a spacer of some sort is needed.

Sorry for the bad quality pictures but it's all I have to go on for now

Only 4 of the 8 holes on the brace are used.1000011498.png.cb375562451a7c813075858a7a5863e4.png

So it can extend to 225mm by switching the outer holes and then to 239 by switching the inner ones (or vice versa)

There's also photo of the bottom of the chassis posted by Tamico

I wonder if they are going to use inserts and long bolts there?

I'd like to see disassembled chassis. So far, it seems that the rear gearbox is quite compact and two of them could be used to make a custom chassis

I agree. I'm sure that centre shaft cover is part of the mechanism for adjusting chassis length. The oddity is that if you measure that dark brown battery and scale things up,  then what's shown is the 225mm wheelbase. I can't see how it shrinks to 210mm and avoids rubbing the tyres on the chassis...

Thanks @Honza that underside shot is the first time I've seen it and I guess shows it being set to 210mm and there's _just_ enough clearance. Maybe 210mm isn't for sticky stuff.

I wonder whether it'll come with all the necessary parts (drive shafts) in the box for all three wheelbase options?

I am tempted by one of these. If I was going to buy any kit to build stock, it'd be this one. I suspect it'll be the most fun (and perhaps flattering) postal racer. Plus it looks so nicely specced. But I already have unbuilt XV-02 and TD4 and no imminent plans to build either, so I'm in no hurry to buy another kit.

Hard to see how it could be shortened from there (looks like the rear section is butted up to a stop) but there's also a lot not visible in these pics. So the longer versions will have more forward weight bias, since pretty much everything is forward of the length adjustment point. But then, much less so than an XV-01.

Neither was I but couldn't justify asking for a 4WD M chassis for a long time and then let it pass when it finally arrives 😀

Based on the photos, I'd guess the spacers simple extend the chassis in that section between the rear end of the dust cover and the rear section (i.e. these spacer won't be protected by the dustcover).  Looks like the rear fender inserts are mounted to the rear section so that will stay aligned back there regardless of wheelbase choice.

I'm 99% it's in the 210mm configuration as it can't get any shorter. The chassis protector is just for the tub, when you extend the chassis it leaves the rear end exposed.

Hopefully more info will drop soon without that chassis cover on it.

I love it, I want one. I've just fixed a chassis for each of my M-chassis cars though, so I need to decide on a bodyshell for this.

Other than below, do Tamiya even make an M-chassis bodyshell currently which has a 4WD roadgoing counterpart? I can't think of one!

  • 210mm Suzuki WagonR RR (not seen release for a long time)
  • 225mm Suzuki Jimny JB23
  • 239mm Mercedes Benz G 320 Cabrio
  • 239mm Toyota Yaris GR

Not much choice!

Yep, it's 210mm, the cad picture in the first post shows 225mm

Definitely. The front axle is also quite close to the bathtub - so 1.9 wheels for Jimny or Mercedes might not fit

@Alex97 Thank you for sharing! The description and the drawing are very helpful until we get the actual manual.

In S format the wheels at the rear seems really really close to the tub. :o

I was going to say that at the short length the ESC space could be very tight like on the M08, but as the tub doesn’t change it’s going to be tight in there whatever wheelbase. Looking at @Alex97‘s picture it would be nice to know what receiver they have squeezed in.

Still a great little chassis, and is on the mental wish list. I thought of doing a rally Giulia a while ago and this would be great for it as Carten etc don’t really appear down here.

That could be "fixed" with slightly wider hexs.

It's gonna be a tight fit to get some of the larger RXs in there.

What motor and ESC combo are people planning on using?

I've got a 1080 G2 and a 15t CoreRc motor going spares, I think that would be a nice starting point.

It will be something I pull out of another car or use for this car while it was intended for another one as this XM-01 wasn't planned at all in my case.

I like to try M chassis cars really basic at start, so probably a silver can first and see how that goes. If I get the idea the chassis can take a lot more or feel underwelmed by its performance on a silver can I'll consider torque or sport or a brushless setup.

Did the same with my XV-01 and was amazed how much fun it is on a silvercan. Nevertheless as it was in need of a good service/rebuild anyway It is now on the to-do list for a brushless conversion. If the XM-01 is as good as I hope it to be it may go that same route.

It seems they didn't even bother. I can't see any receiver in the photos shared by tamico. According to the drawing one with vertical connections should be used. Wouldn't it be boring if Tamiya didn't leave us with any problems to solve?

Wow, a new post by me in the forum (been a while!), and a new 4WD Tamiya rally M-chassis. Happy new year to all!

So, with this, will we finally get the re-re 959 and Celica Gr.B we've been long waiting for? Or will it get another paint scheme on the Mk2 Escort body? Or..... will Tamiya give us something from so far in the left field, and do a 555 Subaru Vivio Safari Edition, as driven by Colin McRae? I mean, gotta sell that PS-16!!!

By the way, loving the look of this chassis.... scared for the price when it drops, but loving the look.

Alex
