Is XV-01 good... Touring Car?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

As in topic: is XV-01 good Touring Car?

I do not expect it to be "proper" Touring Car. I just wonder, can it be run like Touring Car?

I know that there is TC version, which only has different arms and hubs. It is quite interesting, because motor is still on front.

What is reason of my question? I chosen XV-01, because it is level above TT-02, but I want to run on asphalt/ pavement.

My idea is to put Mustang body and use it more like TC. I just wonder, if it possible to run it without constant "Happy Tail"

Although I don't suppose it'll be a race competitive TC, you can certainly end up with one that's nice to drive with work on diff and suspension settings (and tyre choice). The XV-01 seems to do very well at postal racing. A lot of its characteristic is down to the front weight bias, and the TC version would be the same in that regard anyway.

I just raced my first touring car race on XV-01, although it was converted to FWD by removing the belt, rear diff and the rear driveshafts.

With stiffer springs, reduced droop and sway bars it is okay to drive even on high grip carpet, but at least with my setup it rolled pretty easily when touching the kerbs, so it is not very forgiving for mistakes. And it seems that the cornering speed was not as high as pure touring cars. I was dead last in the race, but had a pretty tight fight for the penultimate place, so racing was real fun!

Part of the uncompetitiveness was my inexperience in racing (my hands were literally shaking during the race), part of it was pretty weak motor (affects also the braking power), part was top heavy bodyshell (with glued on windows and Tamiya touring car cocpit), and maybe the most significant part was that my car was almost 500g overweight.

Therefore I would say that the XV-01 is by no means optimal as a touring race car, but can do that role as well if you really want to.

And if you wanted the XV-01 for parking lot racing/bashing, I would say it is very good for that. It is not sensitive to rough asphalt, dirt or small pebbles like a "real" touring car would be. And with less grip than carpet, the chassis works really well in my opinion.

If you want to run an XV01 on asphalt just for fun, you only really need stiffer springs up front and more on-road focused tires.

Just keep in mind that it was designed to handle more like a real car, rather than compete on a track. It's heavy, higher CoG, weight distribution is up front, it doesn't turn in as sharp as a purpose built touring car, but most purpose built touring cars make for poor parking lot racers.

Yeah! It’s a fantastic parking lot touring car. Handles all of the “real world” bumps and dirt like a champ and is very durable. A dirty sealed asphalt parking lot can be a challenge for a proper TC while the XV is right at home.

Have you thought about using a TC01? Maybe not so good if the surface is rough?

I'd like to see how it does as postal racer.

Same here, but its debatable if we can call the TT-range "purpose built touring cars".

It's a fantastic touring car indeed and the famous 60/40 weight bias is not a hindrance. I believe @Nicadraus runs his on pavement? I seem to recall pretty cool videos that he made.

Any thoughts on building/running an XV01 bone stock? I am looking to pick one up over the newer XV02. XV01 much better bang for $ it appears. Not really interested in spending $ on hop up options.

For parking lot runs it doesn't need much, just shim NN4 and run a non-Tamiya pinion. Stiffer front springs can help the handling if you find that it sways too much.

Steel hex head suspension ball joints will allow you to make adjustments much easier over the usual "pry and pop" setup.

Plaza Japan might have some kits in stock for a bit less than Amain/etc.

why not get a XV-02RS? It's good in stock form for the road.
