Kyosho Pureten project

Recommended Posts

So last night I picked up a Kyhoso Pureten Alpha, I believe it's the Mk1.

It's in decent condition, all the kyosho 27mhz radio, receiver, servos work just perfect but the centre duff has issues, missing 1 driveshaft and another is broken at the end. I had a look last night and I think I can get most of the parts new to sort this out

It has a Hpi lexus body on it that doesn't seen to fit the wheelbase correctly, I would ideally prefer a Escort Cosworth shell or something similar. I'm sure the nitro cars use a 200mm wide body but unsure of the wheelbase, any suggestions guys?

Try to measure it from wheelnut to wheelnut and that'll get you an approximate wheelbase. I would assume that you anyways have to take into account how large the tyres are and how the body sits on the chassis, etc. Nitro is way beyond my skill level, but I still find them cool. :)

So last night I investigated why the front diff seemed notchy, turns out someone tried to fix it and assembled the diff and output cups for the dog bones too close to the diff housing causing it to bind, sorted that and refitted the diff back on the car... Still notchy of sorts, next up will be the centre diff to investigate lol

The steering seems to be tight so have a look last night while the front was disassembled. Same issue as the diff, incorrectly refitted, the servo works perfectly when disconnected for the steering mechanism. I think it's still not perfect as it was sticking again when I put it back together so I'll have to fully strip it and suss it out

So here's what I reckon I need to get a sound running chassis

Rear Differential

8mm x 14mm x 4mm bearings x5

5mm x 10mm x 4mm bearings x 11

5mm x 8mm x 9mm needle bearing x 1 for the clutch bell

4 x dogbone shafts

1 x inner drive hub cup

Alloy 12mm wheel hex and pins (I'll just buy tamiya ones)

I'll look at the steering components and start cleaning tonight, once I've had a blast with the Grasshopper 😂😂😂

The wheel base is 260mm and track width is 200mm for future reference for other Pureten owners, haven't decided on a body or wheels yet for myself but seem every one that I want is 190mm 😭

Tonight I found the issue with the steering, turns out someone tried forcing a self tapping screw into a M3 thread on the pivot pins. Luckily I mangled to get the correct thread bolts in without tapping out the holes

If I had a nickel for every Used RC or 1:1 motorcycle I’ve encountered where someone previous force a self tapper in or ( as I am in the U.S. ) bodged the nearest sized SAE fastener in place of the correct metric one, I would have at least several nickels.

Managed to source a front differential on Ebay, both front and rear use the same internals, Part number is AG6 on the Pureten Alpha GP 2 diagram

Also bought Yeah Racing Anti-wear grease

I need some drives haft too, dogbone style that measure 45mm from pin to pin if anyone know where to get??

So the 8mm x 14mm x 4mm bearings arrived today, so time for a good degrease to remove the crud that's in the diff and apply a small amount of anti wear grease. Hopefully the remaining bearings are in the post tomorrow

So I finally got it to a running chassis yesterday, had a few minor issues and crashed it a little but the damage is easy fixed.

Bought new 60mm Shocks from amazon, fitted the new diff and bearing set and general cleaning of everything.

Probably the easiest Nitro to set up and it runs very well with the original 27mhz Kyosho Radio and servos etc

The few issues I have is, the servo saver is crud and makes a horrible noise when steering. Also when steering the front dogbones want to jump out of the outer drive cups. The rest are to to with the body but that's further down the line.

I've decided due to stories of the Pureten destroying Differentials for fun and the way it understeers when turning and accelerating at the same time, it's going to be run in RWD which I can get away with due to the lack of a center differential.

Turned out really nice! looking forward to seeing what the body choice will be. What size is that engine .10? it looks so small! Im sure the car still gets up and goes pretty good, especially being rwd right now.

Yeah I've put this to the side whilst I'm doing the Super Hornet build, yeah it's a bit fast compared to the hopper/hornet lol I've my eye on a few body/wheel combinations but haven't decided lol I can't remember what size it is now, I'll dig it out later on 👍

It's a Kyosho Gx12 engine, I'm assuming it's a 0.12 cc
