I have been wondering of late what other models out there are either built by Tamiya for other companies (like the FX-10 for Futaba) or knock-offs (like the Academy RR copy of the Grasshopper)?

Thanks,

Where is this world going, are we going to collect real copies of real Tamiya cars...? [;)] [?] [xx(] [|)]

MRC was Tamiya's U.S. distributor prior to Tamiya's setting up shop in the U.S. That's why some early Tamiya kits were repackaged by MRC for U.S. distribution. The RM series cars like Datsun 280ZX and Can Am Lola were good expamples of MRC repackaging. Some of these early car kits' box lids were done in 100% English with no Japanese printings on them at all. At first glance, they may look like a bootlegged copy, but were indeed the real thing. Panda RC made a Hornet-like clone named the Cyclone. Unlike other knock-offs of dubious quality, Panda did a great job on the Cyclone, IMHO. Basically, it's a hopped-up Hornet with anodized aluminum shocks, anodized aluminum side-rail guards (like Payma, CrP. etc.), chrome plated ft. lower control arms, 3 pc. gold plated wheels, and excellent hardware, decals, and overall workmanship.[:0] No, I'm not trying to sell any of 'em! In fact, I searched over a year to find one for myself.[:D]

Hey guys,

I just picked up one of the imposter Holiday Buggies off of Ebay just the other week. The guy had a bin of $16.00, so I frantically went back and made sure that he wasnt charging like $100.00 shipping, and bin'd it. Just got it the other day. Identical to the original in many respects, although I am only going by what I have seen in pics. It is completely mint, unfortunately, there is no radio, and I think it came with one originally, not like you used your own stuff. Has a little speaker up front for sounds. I honestly thought it was an original until Twmaster implied it was possibly a clone-oh well, still looks good. Anybody want to do a trade?

I'm surprised I have not seen this topic already, as I'm somewhat of an Expert on these matters [;)]

there have been many Tamiya clones over the years, some of them direct copies, and others that borrow basic designs from their cars and have a certain simularities to certain Tamiya cars.

The Grasshopper in Probably the most "knocked off" of all Tamiya Models, Panda Cyclone, Mugen Manx, World Engines Rockbuster, Academy Road Runner the list goes on...

other cars that have been ripped off are the Holiday Buggy, Hotshot, Supershot, Bigwig, Hornet?, Striker, Fox, Lamboghini Cheeter, Bruiser? there are probably many many more that I either haven't seen yet or cannot recall at this time.

they say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery... well not quite [8)] a lot of the Tamiya clones (essecially the Academy kits) are of inferiour quality to the Tamiya original, others have hop-ups or modifications made to try and improve on the originals or make them look more original, but for the most part they were desperate attemps by lesser toy/model companies to try and CA$H-IN in the popularty of the Tamiya craze.

fortunatly they sold in very few numbers as most punters prefered the genuine product to the cut price fakes and as such they can be quite rare, but I think they are everybit as collectable as the originals if a **** sight cheaper [;)]

I actually have an Academy RoadRunner (like Rockbuster), and I remember as a kid I was very disappointed with the quality of the thing.

It's like the Hornet, but instead of having springs on either side of the gearbox mounts, it has just one spring in the middle, in addition to the shocks, and this makes the rear end flop around a lot.

It has a hard plastic body shell, and it's not of very good quality, and breaks easily. It also has a funky yellow bumper, which brings associations of spacecraft.

Interestingly, all the plastic bearings and shafts are of US spec, by that I mean they are measured in inches, not millimetres like Tamiya uses.

The plastic used for the chassis structural parts, like A-arms and gear box is really brittle, and not of very good quality.

Don't forget that the panda cyclone also has a simple version floating frontend. Not fixed like the hornet uprights. Bad wording I know -but I hope you get the point. Mugen also put out the same cyclone kit.

You still didn't do bad TW, for just a little over $20 i cant helkp but notice, that it is a different car on the box, suspension wise, even if you dont use the car maybe you could use the parts i.e. tyres. I dont know too much about the vintage buggies myself, especially the knock offs. But if the bits are cross compatable they might be pretty useful!

Have any of you seen the 1/14 rc highway tractors on ebay right now. They look similar in size, but really plasticy. They're going for

$49 and claim to go 25kmh and last for an hour. All I have seen so far is a "King Hauler" and a "Aeromax". I just wondered if anyone had one.
