Any alternatives to the stock BBX body?

Recommended Posts

Have had a lot of fun with this one. This is where I am right now. Im tackling the body tomorrow but would like to know about any other bodies that have been made to work in this platform.

Wheels are not stock one but Proline plastic beadlocks. Similar offset.  It looks pretty good without the body panels to be honest. Looks like a Sand Rail. But the body protects it from debris when running.

Looks great. How well do the Tamiya tires fit on the Proline wheels? Do they need any trimming or do they work ok?

They fit great. No trimming. On the rear tires I used longer screws than the ones provided. That let me build the rear wheels slightly more wider since the back tire is beefier. To get them wider I just did not screwed it all the way. Worked like a charm. I don't have a proper scale but I think the Proline wheels are lighter than stock.

I truly believe there is an engineer down at the Tamiya headquarters laughing just thinking how DIFFICULT is the cut this body. I usually dont mind cutting a lexan body so much but this is almost ridiculous. They should consider providing already cut.

I quite enjoyed cutting it out. I'm hoping to paint it tomorrow. Just can't decide on a colour yet.

I am curious how a Tamiya beetle body might fit… the BBX looks bigger than an ORV chassis in pics.

The BBX is substantially larger that the poly beetle or the SS Beetle bodies.  Not sure how either could work.

I made the mistake of a couple of nasty bends in the plastic when scoring and snapping the body in its more detailed areas, which are now visible in the finished product. It's a shame but was also a rookie error - I wouldn't have done it if I'd given it more thought and patience.

On other bodies, I couldn't find a suitable shell to base it off but I had in mind a project to make a sort of modern(ish) Blazing Blazer body for the BBX. I think something like that would be great.

Somewhat late to the discussion @chaman but I like this car best as it is on your first picture - just the tubular frame and nothing else, kind of like a Kyosho Javelin B)

I like too to be honest. Simpler panels on the sides would look the best, IMO.

Be interested to see what other bodies can potentially fit this buggy too. Here's something I whipped up to hit the track while I took my time to paint the stock shell. Was going for a kyosho scorpion inspired look. :)

3d printed flat panels? Now that's a nice idea. Very innovative thinking. And I think it looks great.

I'd that a kyosho hard plastic wing?

Thank you. Yes, that's a Kyosho hard wing which I thought fit the overall look.

All this BBX talk makes me want to take the car out for a run... it is awesome fun at the track.

Finished the body panels. What a nightmare. Went with Tamiya Champagne Gold, backed with black. It looks almost like chrome specially in the sun. I am almost considering leaving it without decals or a few only. What you think?

The color looks great and it seems to work well with black wheels, nerf bars, etc.  I'd be very tempted to leave it without decals or maybe add some very simple black stripes.  Maybe test some stripe designs using electrical tape?

Looks good!!

I like the roof. Is that a piece of sheet steel you made up yourself?

The colour is a very original take on it. Very cool. From there I think leaving it sticker free could be a good call, or just a handful of choice ones.

With mine I was aiming for a bare metal look but it ended up just looking silver. I'm going to do another body in a colour, not sure what yet.

Roof is an aftermarket accessory.

I think it looks really, really good and it's a brilliant example of alternative coloring and decoring for this lovely car. The chosen wheels and their color go hand in hand with the color on the body and the stripes.

That said it would probably also have looked nice with the original stripes,  but of course not anywhere near so individual as your version is.
