What do you do when you vow to not buy anymore RC, havent finished your other two builds, and have plans to buy property in Italy? Well you buy a Dynastorm at 2AM!!!

I had wanted a Dyna Storm (DS) since 92ish when they first came out.  Girls, real cars, and adult hood quickly stole my attention and that was that.  Fast forward 2003ish and Tamiya brings the DS back out, war on terror is about to start and before you know it its 2009 and after a deployment I finally get a DS.  There is a build thread in here but most the pics are broken.  The First track outing the infamous E4 broke as well as one of the D rear suspension bulk heads,SMH. The DS ran well before it broke. Dont meet your heroes and all that stuff, it became a shelf Queen.  Summer of 2014 I sold it to fund aftermarket parts for my full size car.

So here we go again, im going to rebuild this as OEM+.  Im going to try and use as many Tamiya parts as possible from latter cars, and Metal/3D print for parts that can't be sourced.  My goal is to have a runner that I can use on track when I take the 511 out and the yard to play with my son and the other rides. If I fail, she shall be back for sale!! Here she is, she is beautiful! Here we go.

Parts have been ordered, tear down begins. This wont be a complete nut and bolt tear down but a rebuild as needed. Its in pretty good shape. Starting from the front. Here you can see the Infamous E4, and D5 pieces in which the shock towers and arms are hung from. A metal D5 and 3D print E4 are on order.  Mmmmm press nut for the shocks, nope that wont work.

IMG-20240331-213057756.jpg

Bottom of E4, looks to have some use, surprised its still in one piece!

IMG-20240331-213115975.jpg

The Chassis has zero marks on it, likely going to order a Fibrelyte graphite one in order to preserve this now rare chassis piece.

IMG-20240331-213120251.jpg

Lastly the rear suspension D parts, surprised they arent cracked, replacements ordered. The DS is in pretty good shape but the non press nuts in the D parts (probably why they aren't cracked) and press nuts on the shocks point to it having some use. Trans already removed as the differential has no differential action, and Im sure that will be good news.....

Welp, this is why the differential didnt have any kind of differential action. The spring washers and thrust beaing are missing.  Luckily Tamiya USA had them althoguh the thrust bearing is the kind you have to assemble....

Ok ok, I'll go. Inside we got: DBO1 rear CVDs, TR201 front hubs, and axles, TD4 slipper, front big bore shocks and springs, and some spare screws and nuts.

I'm trying to build this as a reliable runner as if Tamiya would bring this back out with upgraded parts. The TRF201 parts are fibre reinforced and should add to reliability. The DB01 CVDs are for 511 rear hubs that I'm going to use.

Collins rear suspension mounts and E4 will replace the failure prone factory parts with metal parts from a well know seller in Serbia for the D5 part

The new parts should allow me to actually drive it, and will allow me to save the Uber rare parts.

Super excited!

Apparently on all the excitement I didn't take a pic of all the parts in their packages, sorry. Here's the TRF201 front hub stuff.

A carbon chassis and some alloy parts?

Close, no carbon.....yet. Fibre reinforced Factory parts from TRF biggies, big bored, and some CVDs.

Ok, first job to tackle. Can I get the TD4 slipper to work with the trans with out needing a 3d printed case, TD4 diff, etc.  Love what Collins and Sgt Spiers have done. Just trying something different.

OMG it works!!! I used a 28 tooth 48P pinion that I had from a set of pinions that I mistakenly bought years ago that had the larger non standard 5mm bore.  The pinion slides right over the shaft!!! The slipper shaft has a hole in it that I was able to line up with the pinions grub screw.  I used my drill bress to open the slipper shafts hole up a tiny bit in order to alow the pinion grun screw to fit.  It's almost a perfect fit. If the pinion was about 1mm thinner I'd be able to use an eclip on the end of the slipper shaft to secure it. Alas it's not. I stacked up 3 plastic bushings and a couple shims to keep the shaft from moving. Weight 50 percent less then the standard Tamiya set up and now I can use 48P spur and pinions!!! Still spins super smooth

Next, can the TRF201 carbon reinforced 25 degree castor blocks, steering, and axle fit? Why? They are easy to find,  Dont want to break originals as I plan on running this HARD. Vahla they are a drop in after reaming the hinge pin hole on the c hub from the 201. Nice carbon reinforced plastic!

TRF is saving the day and project is tracking as I planned in my head!!! Rear TRF511/TRF201 hubs fit perfectly once the hinge pin hole is reamed.  A combination DB01 front dog bones and rear drive hubs make up this rear end.  Universals for the rear would be nice and I have one more combination to try but this will work well and this step has removed another failure prone part, ie the gummy plastic rear hubs.

Pretty much done until my parts from Collin and Serbia show up.

Forgot to mention why I had to use different universals/dog bones. The standard DS universal fit just fine but the universal joint now fouls on the lower arm due to the rear hubs design. I also want to be able to use the pin wheels I have for track duty and the DS axles are splined for the hex, they don't use the pins which narrows wheel options.

To emphasize the difference to my gearbox...with this you replace the complete internal gear parts, slipper and diff by available spare parts (especially the capability to use the TA06 oil gear diff which reduce the maintenance of the diff to a minimum) :D

But thumbs up for your idea with the motor pinion 👍🏻

My amazing parts from Collin are being held hostage by customs in NJ, no darn movement for a month. Time to do what I can.  One of the parts I ordered are 3D printed (and hopefully stronger) D1 and D2.  Ive got a NOS D parts tree so, going to run it with the old D1/2 and use nylon lock nuts.

Here's how they look now, notice the standard nut (not correct) and a press nut that causes ANY plastic it touches to break.

IMG-20240406-144457822-HDR.jpg

I don't see any cracks, those lines sre likely just the mold, hopefully lol.

IMG-20240426-212903967.jpg

Lock.nutd installed and just barely tight enough to make the mounts secured and not move, hopefully they don't break the D1/D2. If they break the NOS stuff will go on/be saved for shelfer life.

Sorry forgot to take Pics before I reassemble. But you can see them.

Metal trans brace. Very nice! It's also threaded, eliminates the press nuts used to secure it to the shock tower.

IMG-20240428-113942371-HDR.jpg

TD2/201 slipper. Looks so good and modern!

IMG-20240428-113948877-HDR.jpg

I have an E4 from ORB/Shapeways on the way too.  I'll be able to finish the build for now, and run it with the motor/ESC combo, but not to the vision I have. Will have to wait for Collins stuff for that. Stay tuned!

I think you should save your original ABS parts and lets hope parts will go through custom soon. Or you build a second Dyna Storm  : )

Fresh from Serbia and shapeways we got new front end components (D5 and E4). I didn't want the blue but at the time.its all he had ready to order. Looks good.  The stock Tamiya ones shockingly arent broken. Surprising as there are signs that this was ran and taken apart a few times (scrapes on the E4, wrong screws used in parts, etc. The brass color isn't just for looks, that's weight that you can use to balance the car. I left them all in, maybe it'll turn in better now and remove some of that Audi esque understeer!

IMG-20240501-171148058-HDR.jpg

Two different components from two different suppliers made out of different material. They fit VERY WELL!!!

IMG-20240501-171350057-1.jpg

A very rare site a used and in one piece E4 and D5.

IMG-20240501-174122444.jpg

Just like the trans mount from the same vendor the D5 is threaded.  I removed the press nut from the shock tower and installed in reverse, ie screw with washer through the shock tower.

Front end coming together nicely.

Its spring, once baseball seaosn is over and Im done coaching my sons (2) teams itll be track time. Time to finish these builds. The DS and the Team car will be track rats to join the TF and 511.  The Jugg2 will be a great looking yard basher.

ANYWAY, this is the DS thread.  The part that Ive been waiting for to finsh the build is a short front shock tower, and I finally have one.  I never realy enjoyed the asthetics of the long front shocks, I really think Tamiya used a couple of AE's highly succesful race cars for inspiration.   IF Tamiya were to make a new DS with some modern takes the first thing I think they wouild do is go with a shorter front shock tower with the gorgeous big bores.  Here they are! So smoooooooooth.  The blue shocks are PERFECT, no leaks, and super smooth. But in the original parts bin for now.  40 weight oil in these front shocks.

IMG-20240509-130401154.jpg

Looks very good, no cab forward will EVER look this stunning.

IMG-20240509-130352375.jpg

Great match for those beutiful rear big bores filled with 35 weight.

IMG-20240509-130406039.jpg

One reason that I fitted the 201/DN01 front C hub and axle was to take advatage of modern materials while using Tamiya parts, second reason was to alow the use of modern wider front wheels.  Here I have 201 wheels fitted, I have the optional axle on hand too that alows for the use of smaller bearings that can be used for a wider range of wheel options.

IMG-20240509-130412451-1.jpg

That profile shot is just so good.  Modern rear wheels, I like the DS/Super Astute/Top Force wheels when they first came out like 30 years ago.  At this point thay are beyond played out in my opinion style wise and dont alow the use of modern 2.2" tires. These do the job nicely. Sitting a little high, but theres no motor, servo, or battery in there yet. Soon.

IMG-20240509-130342504.jpg

Build is pretty much done, Ill update again once I have the 10.5 HW in, Servo, and track body painted up.

Disapointed! I just opened the Xerun 13.5 combo I purchased from Amain. It does not include the sensor wire. How do you sell a brushless sensored combo and not include the sensor wire. Geeze! AND Ebay has alwed Amain to make you wait 7 days before leaving a negative or neutral comment. Why? Hopeing that we forget and not leave the bad review?

Well calling this one done....for now. In the future Ill add Sgt's gear box for the fitting of the 201 internals. Im just running a stock brushless set up, although Im betting itd hold up just fine.  Misplaced the darn gear box cover among all the stuff!!! LOL.

Now with TRF Pin wheels

With the body on and off you can see where Tamiya got alot of their idea sitting next to the team car I just finished.

Whats next, a replica body and then some track outings to compare it to the Team Car its next to, and probably Sgts trans case with 201 internals. LIkely in Winter of 24/25.

Great build @GTodd, looking very nice😎 Ingenious little mod with the gearbox too. Hopefully she's a good runner, let us know how you get on👍👍

I went with the Custom RC alloy parts and the big bores on my build too, such high quality pieces, nothing less for the legendary DS.

Might be worth replacing the arms with 3D printed versions, those originals are likely to be mighty brittle by now and are mighty hard to come by🫣
