Tamiya Tracks on sale by TamiyaUSA

Recommended Posts

Dudes these are so much fun! I think $140 is too high for a pair but $70 is cheap once you see all that goes into them. Such a cool little thing and I think the short wheel based GF01 is the perfect platform for them. Do it do it do it!

I hate when this happens... (no, I don't)

These tracks are so random. I wasn't even looking to get them, yet I just ordered 2 sets.  I don't even have a GF-01 chassis!  (Oh, I could use them on my CC01 Unimog!)  I was sure my next Tamiya was going to be an M08. But there is no surprise when going with a plan, is there? Sometimes little unexpected deviation is more fun. Though, for my RC life, it feels like deviations is the norm.

Anyway, thanks for letting me know about the sale!

:o OMG I had no idea you could run one big track around the two rear assemblies on the G6-01/TR chassis. That would be so cool even with regular wheels and tires up front. I have been resisting these things for a while but this is tough. Don't forget the numerous ball bearings required if you want to replace the bushes.

Any reason why the MF01x chassis is not listed? They have shorter versions of the GF01 / TL01 arms

Not sure if the sale works out much cheaper on this side of the pond once shipping and taxes are taken care of, but...  I've wanted to do a tracked G6-01 for an age now.  There was someone on here a long while ago had a full set of 3 pairs for sale for a bargain price but I wasn't in a position to buy just then.

Right now I need to stop thinking about new projects and start thinking about finishing what I've started!

A lot of us have thought about making a 1/2 track or something similar on the G6-01 . I also didn’t know one could make one long set of treads for ten back, but since you assemble them yourself , I don’t see why you couldn’t.

I'm so torn on this . . . Spend $140 on just tracks, or pull the trigger on a Landfreeder Quadtrack for $300 . . .

Turning a Konghead into a half-track idea is a really attractive idea to me.  So I looked up, but I ran into 2 problems.  1) the track unit reduces the speed. The front tires would be running faster compared to the tracks. I suppose I could remove dog bones on the front.  But 2) there is a big height difference. I would need huge front tires. (Which may or may not interfere with the shell or the tracks.)

Something like this might work better.  Even this could use slightly larger front tires.

He had kindly put up his design on thingiverse.  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4714521  (I really need to get a 3D printer...)

This "box-dude" seems to have experimented with various chassis.

One thing that i am on the fence is looks like diffs should be locked to get the most out of it…. Which i dont like to disassemble gf-01 chassis with bunch of eclips… on top of bunch if screws to access diffs...)

Diff unloading isn't fun.  I see why Tamiya includes the differential putty.  (This youtuber installed tracks without using the putty.)

From what I understand the TT02 kinda overheats with the tracks. REX was saying something about that when he was running his in the slush and snow. If you have a GF01 or a CC01-2 then I honestly think you'd be better off with just ordering the tracks.

Good info, thanks! I wonder how much work it is to swap these tracks out from tires, and back again. I have a few CC01 and CC02 that I could use these on, as well as a GF-01TR. Already have a GF-01FT to build yet.

I wish TamiyaUSA would have an actual sale section link.  Otherwise its a scavenger hunt to find the items they decided to mark down

I can’t remember if it affects the standard setup but if you go with the grouser tracks you’ll need to modify or make custom lower center arms to move the center tracks forward a bit. Otherwise the rears will hit while turning :(. I believe moving the rears back required more work/parts and put the shafts at too great of a angle.

I spent months debating same thing, I was going to get two landfreeders and turn them into regular trucks and have a spare set of tracks, or maybe one freeder and one set of tracks, but ended up just buying 3 track sets in the end.

I was wondering if you could use the Dynahead portals on the front axles to more closely match the rear track speed and height.

The portal axle housings do not have the required mounting points to do so unfortunately. It's not an issue as the tracks will put the chassis way up in the air. Also, you don't need the reduction as the drive wheels are about (sorry, didn't measure) an inch in diameter so it's effectively geared quite low.

That might be worth trying!  I have no idea what the gear ratios are for the tracks and the portals.

But both tracks and portal gears reduce gearing and increase the height. Depending on the diameter of the wheel, it might be possible to have front 2 portals and rear 4 tracks.  (The portal gear looks to be about 2:1 reduction ratio. If the track sprocket is about an inch as opposed to 55mm tires of touring cars, then they could also be about 2:1 ratio.)

I bought two sets, couldn't pass it up for $70 per set.  I bought the GF-01 land cruiser when they were on sale back in 2021 for $149 and still haven't built it.  I liked the tracks version but thought it was too much at the time now I'll have one for $300.
