RC10 40th Anni!

While the RC10 is tough as nails, it can wear out over time.  My backyard track is very sandy so worn ballcups, hinge pins, drive cups, dog bones, shock shafts, - just about every moving part - are a nagging problem.  Even the chassis pan on at least one of my runners is wearing thin.

I have actually broken very few parts and it's always been due to driver error.

For sure, all of which you can easily find exceot maybe the drive cups, maybe get a few of thise, that said Ive never worn them out on any of mine but my cars only get occasional use with the kids.  Hubs, arms, suspension mounts etc. Ive never broke one on a RC10 and theyve bene ran on 1/8 dirt tracks with brushless/lipo. These were OG stealth cars at that, not new produced stuff. New rere palstics should be stronger.

Just reading RC10talk and it looks like the RC10T might be coming back too. I assume these parts listed on the AE website are exclusive to the truck?

The price is not bad really as well the clear is 319 and this one which looks nicer is only 60 more.

Why would this cost almost 20% more than the clear though? I don't disagree that it's a good car, but it really does feel excessive for such a basic kit. Heck you can get an Egress for about the same price.

I still want one but I'm hesitant because of the price. I'll either miss out or pick one up once we see a discount it if they're not selling. Can't help but feel that most buyers are considering this an investment and that AE would have made a lot more $$ selling a higher qty at $320.

Yes, new molded parts should be stronger.  If you run original molded parts, it's important to keep them hydrated so they don't become brittle.  I recall breaking maybe a couple front arm blocks, steering and castor blocks.  This happens when one clips a tree or fence post - we have many obstacles in the back yard.

Shock shafts and hinge pins can be made from 1/8" round stock if one has access to groove and threading cutting tools.  I bought a 3' length from my local hardware store a few years ago and I think it's time to restock.

Most RC10 parts are available through aftermarket sources and original parts from ebay (if you have deep pockets).  Nearly every RC10 collector will want one pristine example to display and remember the old days.  Pristine A stamp pans and front plates are fetching big money these days.

If the trend holds, maybe someday I could liquidate my relatively modest collection and use the proceeds to buy a winter home in Costa Rica.

I'd wager that these will never hit discount. They will match the supply to meet the demand. They won't make the same mistake that they made with the Worlds re-release 10 years ago

Here in the UK it seems that the allocated stock might already be sold out.

I wouldn't mind having one of these, just for the stamped & laser-etched parts and the unique box. I don't really have a problem with the price but it is a bit galling, when I paid less than £150 each for two of the classics in 2013.

The plastics cost more, compared to the clear fragile parts on the CC. Where can you buy a NIB Egress for 320?

I agree they won't be discounted , id be surprised if AE doesn't just make what gets pre-ordered.

Due to the cough cough Pandemic and the current Potato for an American President (I'm American), the world's economy is a faaaaar different place. Fuel costs alone justify the cost increase.

From my understanding, most of the profits in RC are in replacement parts and hop-ups, so mass producing re-res that will likely end up on a shelf probably isn't all that profitable, thus the limited edition gimmick.

Tamiya is big enough to where they can make re-res left and right, and it helps that ABS plastic is easy on molds.

Of course, AE makes race-grade stuff but that's a niche part of the hobby. On the other hand, there's plenty of money in selling crawlers, MT10s and other "bashers", since people often end up buying replacement parts and upgrades.

I'm referring to 380 for the gold pan. I hate to promote Tower but you can get an Egress for less than that after discounts. Not only it it a way more complex kit, but I would argue the quality and materials are better as well not to mention the presentation. I honestly doubt the plastics cost more.

Exactly, so that leads me to believe that AE would want to take advantage of volume sales after having invested so much to get this into production. My prediction is that they release this under the "40th Anniversary" guise to capitalize on FOMO at a higher price and then re-re a standard version for the masses who are not willing to go that high. Best of both worlds from their side and they won't get flak because the 40th is still "special"

Man, I applaud your optimism.:)

Of course, I hope you are right.

I'd like nothing more than for everyone who wants to own an RC10 to have that chance.  That would provide for them the opportunity to drive a real race car -- with multiple world championships -- a legend in the RC world.

Well I’ve pre-ordered one through my LHS. He states that he cant guarantee he’ll get one as I believe the distributor isnt sure how many they’ll get. If I miss out I won’t be shattered, but would be nice to have one

I just find it annoying that 12 or 13 years ago, I bought two lots of old RC10s: one lot of five cars (two new-built late-production CEs, one new-built early 10T, one nice runner 10T, and one nice runner original World's car, and a couple boxes of rare hop-ups) for $380 and then later a lot of five more (two beat-up B2s, a scruffy runner Team car, and two beat-up 10Ts) for $250. They just weren't worth much then.

I fixed up and sold them all off, one by one, for maybe $150 each, except the Worlds car, which fetched $250 if memory serves. Turned a profit, but when I see trashed B-stamp gold pans going for $250 on eBay, and now this new limited-edition re-re for the same price as that first lot, it's a bit frustrating.

Not that I'm all that concerned about what those cars would be worth now - though it would be quite a lot - but I regret selling a couple of them, especially that one really nice 10T, and I'll probably never see another one for a reasonable price.

Already ordered 2 from different names, only 1 per customer

I just yelled at a guy on another forum and got banned.

They ordered 4 of them using different cards from family members.

Saying one to build, one to drive, two for selling later.

Drives me nuts and pure B.S.

I pre one of them and probably won't get it

I feel your pain, I think the 30th classic and Worlds car awoke the RC10 collecting frenzy.  Kind of like what the Fast and Furious did for Supras.

I'd love to compare the new one to my late Edinger car.

Even if I don't get the new one I still have my dream car I got last year in built but never ran condition. Actually a lot of parts have never been installed and still in their bags.

I have a new protech body I'm going to do in box art and send this car to the shelf. The owner did paint it, but I'll save that body for a runner car I want to build.

Probably the best looking rc car IMO, can't stop looking at it.

What a sweet piece of RC history.

If I'm not mistaken, I recall when you got it.  You weren't sure about the asking price but eventually moved ahead with the buy.  I think you did very well on that purchase and now you have a real Edinger car.  That one's a keeper.  :)

The Price sucks as the clear kits were 319 usd at first now they are 399 USD and to Canada its 499+50 shipping through AE to Fed Ex who make more money on collecting taxies and duties for import, tacking ona extra 50? so there closer to 600CDN$  I ordered 2 not because I enjoy it but I missed the last re release and I am hoping for parts supply so i can repair my other RC10 kits?   I enjoy running my older kits and want some spares at decent prices?

It's definitely a keeper. It's actually one of the items I requested to be buried with when I die. Like others, it has tremendous emotional value to me. 11 years old back then racing my old kyosho raider with those rc10 at the track. Remembering how smooth they were and that gold metal chassis made an 11 year old crave for one. Of course dad couldn't afford to get me an rc10 back then but that is ok I vowed to have me one some day, and even though it's decades later, there I have an RC 10, lol. So yah it's not going anywhere.

I have verified all the items that make this a late Edinger car, it even has the original speed controller still staple in its bag. The driver figure and wing have never been cut out or painted plus the wire you have to bend for the wing is still unbent, many more parts that never got installed, still in bags are in the box. Yah I'm proud of the 600 I spent on this, well worth it, no regrets

The guy I bought it from said I was the only one not trying to low ball the price at all plus he knew I am a serious hobbyist from the questions I asked. This was his pride and joy too and was happy to sell it to me as he turned down others. I like to think this car is meant to be mine.

I've got to get a video made and post it.

That’s a great story, thank you for sharing.  Was your dad an RC hobbyist?

When I’m gone, the RCs and Honda motorcycle collection will go to my nephew John.  We have similar interest and John has my father’s RC planes and Tamiya Sherman tank.  Dad and my older brother Steve flew control-line model planes in the 1960’s then dad and I started building RC planes in the early 1970’s.  Dad passed away in 2005 after a battle with multiple myeloma and we lost Steve two years ago.

Like you, my earliest memory of the RC10 was at the track.  It was spring 1986 or ’87 and a buddy who knew about my Sand Scorcher told me that he started racing RC’s at a dirt track located behind a hobby store in Springfield IL – near my home town.  It seemed like a fun way to spend an afternoon so I gathered my old box-stock Scorcher and Futaba stick radio and drove to the track the following Sunday.  It was a nice spring day and the turnout was very good.  There were a few dozen participants so they separated the RC10’s from other brands - roughly 10 cars per heat race.  After my first race, I was directed to "turn marshal" the RC10 class (a new concept for me) and for the first time, I watched them sail over jumps and gracefully navigate the twists and turns up-close.  Unlike my Scorcher, the RC10’s suspension was very compliant, its tires were grippy, it used a differential and appeared to handle that loose dirt track a lot better than my old car.  Well, like you, I was hooked.  Soon after that day, dad and I drove to the hobby store and bought RC10s.  I raced mine for many years and I still have both of our cars today (well, mine’s in pieces now).  Over the years, my car became a parts donor for subsequent RC10 racers.

I restored dad’s car a few years ago.  Dad was never really into buggies so he asked me to paint a Mustang body for his car.  I typically display his car with a contemporary Protech body and wing.  Unfortunately, the original body and wing were lost to time.

AP1GczNVVsH9f5W3MK7yWTDMBGUzSGkhWcYwSDw5

AP1GczP3yrNeQw2qOuxYsD-rVyMPtIIhArOgQqeW

AP1GczPHyshzerDfwFjecbhbbMDnLw0qm85KA5jD

Dad never raced RCs but he often attended my races.  He raced a stock-car with his brothers in the early 1960’s so I think he felt at home at a race track.

Today, I run my RC10’s around the backyard track and fondly remember my dad who introduced me to the RC hobby all those years ago.

Great story and car. I'm not sure how I got fixated on the Astute as my first RC. Maybe it was the glossy catalog, Tamiya presence in the hobby store, etc. I don't regret getting the Astute but I might've enjoyed the rc10 more due to its durability
