Im new to Tamiya Club so i figured i would document this build and that might be a good introduction. Ill try and keep it intresting. I know the Egress has been built a lot but i have some ideas that maybe some would like to see. If there is interest in this build, ill take it through to the end.

Today, i just want to focus on the motor for this build. Ive decided to go brushed and i thought a new Avante Special motor would look cool and be appropriate. I got one off of ebay. Its new, but I have some doubts on its performance. We will see what we get; got the rpm pick-up on there...

Tamiya says this is a GT tuned motor with a special decal. Should be good for 19k rpm @ 7.2 - 7.4vdc. So lets feed it 7.2 volts and plenty of amps and give her a rip on the test bench.20240503_085240.thumb.jpg.821e24174db3f47d43d50627c34c602f.jpgnot so good :( about 15,000 rpm Or 2083Kv

25 Turn rotor, solid bushings, stand up brushes... all as expected. I have some stuff that might help us get where we want to be

These lay down brushes will give us a little more RPM. Sealed roller bearings will make it run smoother and quieter but the biggest change is this 17 turn rotor. This should bring us up to about 2800Kv. Plenty fast but over all (hopefully) safe for the limitations of this old but beautifully designed buggy. The anodized red heat sinks will match the build theme so ill throw these on as well.

These brushes are so hard... Come on, come on... Oh, so boring... motor sounds good and runs nice and cool!  Want to rev it up... Cant. Wait. Much. Longer... 🤪

Great results so far! My GT Tuned also tested under it's rating. I got 16,400 @ 7.2V and will definitely be doing the bearing mods, at minimum.

I actually didnt expect that result. I figured the Tamiya spec was good.  Also, i noted the original brushes were matched to the rotor from the factory well.  So,  its not a break-in issue. 4000 rpm at 7.2v is quite a lot in my opinion. The sport tuned motors ive had test out at about 16,000-16500rpm. (as i recall)... ryan

My black can Sport Tuned tested at 21,400

My newer Sport Tuned tested at 21,100

Needless to say, I was shocked at the GT Tuned results, and I've tested more than one. The only way to get 19k+ is at 8.4V

The build is finished...  It came out nothing like i pictured in my mind.  I was gonna do it up in white and red origionaly, then I sort of fell in love with this gun metal after painting up a Porsche body. :D Anyway, all the red bits were with that in mind however, i think it works nice with the gun metal as well. I might paint up a red and white body because i have all the custom decals but Im happy with it for now and it runs and drives way better than I expected. I installed the front one way and it needs more brakes but it is super stable and has loads of handling. Here are some pics if anyone is intrested... ryan.

That looks absolutely wonderful. I really like all the red bits. Very unique. Hopefully you're now going to go out and thrash it!

I was thinking about using the same motor (the Avante 2011 labeled one) for my OG Avante.  The Technigold lack some zip.  What rotor is that? Where did you source the parts from, beearing size etc? Thank you. Great stuff.

Tube nuts... there are wheel spacers installed in the rear to move the rear tires out to match the track width of the front tires. The tube nuts were needed to secure the axle. No need to do this, it may actually hurt performance on some tracks, I dont know. Generally i would say Tamiya Engineers made a narrow rear track for a specific reason and would know better than me. That being said, this Buggy does handle awesome with a wide rear track but it wasnt done for performance.  It was an aesthetic choice like a lowered ride height. This buggy isnt likely to see much jumps or track time so is suits me this way. Also the wheel spacers are red which was desirable for this build. :D

Couldnt tell you where all the parts came from... I have tons of 540 sized rotors and motor parts ive collected over the years. Ive tested all the rotors and marked them by kV so i kind of know how fast they are and just go for the rotor with the rpm im looking for. 540 Rotors can be found at online hobby shops and i buy sealed can bearings in bulk from amazon/ebay: 1/8" x 3/8" x 5/32. This can has the medal "tabs" that hold it together. If you want a Tamiya motor 540 build, better to build a super stock can. RZ if you want laydown end bell or TZ/BZ if you normal end bell. As far as the brushes and springs, who knows. Probably from the 90s. Once i get it all set up i tune with springs and aim for highest rpm. These are lighter springs. 

I picked this can for $40usd for the sticker- the brand new internals are all garbage (gt tuned 25T rotor) but i had everything else. It would have been much easier to just move the sticker to a better can and position it after the motor was installed. The end bell is a laydown type (red) from an RZ can i burned up in a 4wd buggy a few years back. Rotor smoked... anyway this was cheap for me to build.  I normally spend $100usd for a brushless motor and another $150usd for an ESC so it was nice to build a brushed set up again. This hobbywing WP 1080 is just awesome and is $39usd on amazon today. It far surpasses anything we had "back in the day" also looks great.

However, somehow the sticker on the stock can lined up pretty good. This motor is strong and fast now. Seems very appropriate for this buggy. I am very happy with the results.

Dont know if i have enough guts right now. :DIve just spent the better part of a week fixing all of Alex's broken RC cars in my tinker time.  Sometimes Its just nice to have one thats not broken... That feeling will fade and ill give it a thrashing eventually. No rc is sacred in my house... They are all for play.
