The reBuild...CC-01, a second chance (or a second life?)

Recommended Posts

So, for the second time in my R/C life, I let myself be fooled by a CC01. This time used ( and unfortunately too late I discovered abused). This story began a year ago.

So the postman delivers a package to me. Inside is a really shabby specimen of CC01, in very poor condition and very dirty.  My disappointment was so great that I didn't even feel like taking pictures and abandoned it for weeks.

I first separated the various parts for rough cleaning and evaluation of what was needed for restoration, and then reassembled the model following my own whim and previous experience.

This is one of the seller's photos. He was only reporting the front spindle breakage.

And some other, from the seller...

It would appear to be an XB series model

Resizer-168642132358911.jpg

Actually both broken spindles and also a c- hub.

Resizer-168642132537823.jpg

Then so many other things, there was a G2 mount missing on the transmission and the gears were ruined, plastic bushings were in need of replacement, steering system, metal links to be fixed, body to be replaced, tired motor, plastic hex...

I made an initial order of essential parts, A,B,G parts and, in addiction, a little alu kit from chinese store...

Resizer-170698042974025.jpg

Then the waiting, vacations, work, Christmas... in short, I lost so much time.

I am just about to paint up a part built/finished at dismantled CC01 Unimog I got for £25.00 with an 80x2 motor, and full Junfac alloy upgrades from my mate I did the Mountain Rider for. The upgraded front axles had the pivot point in the wrong place on the shaft so it affected the steering. I have gone back to stock. I also think he did something to the drive line. Its very noisy. Spent ages deciding on a colour. Going for Mica red with black arches.

He has badly deleted the front bumper, so I fixed that in the chassis too. Looks stock, and doesn.t have one.

Front assembly.

Based on previous experience, I modified the plastic parts to be able to increase the travel. Then I redid the same on the aluminum parts.

On the left, as supplied. On the right, after mod.

And the comparison with the plastic parts, after modification .

Time to check the shock adsorbers

At the beginning I also prepared a pair of longer CVA.

There is no way to use longer dampers without other mod, and swap to the original configuration.

And funny idea to fix the body

One shot and I fix the body, lock the plate and install a bumper.

But...the body???

The body  comes from afar, from my first CC01 purchased in 2011. A Jeep Wrangler YJ used first on the CC, then on the CR and finally abandoned in a box.

It needs to be fixed, I want to get rid of the roof rack, I will have to close some holes and renew the paint job.

Motor and transmission: classic brushed 35T and 16 pinion gear?

Resizer-17153726680277.jpg

Or let's change, 3:1 gearbox and 20t pinion?

Resizer-17153726682879.jpg

However, it is necessary to make room because of the new footprint

Now I have to find a way to protect the area from dirt.

Not beautiful, the protection made of lexan and glue. Hopefully some black paint will hide it

Time for servo. Swap from the Tamiya one supplied to an old Hitec (really, it's been running around my house for more than 20 years and I'm curious to see if it still works).

A little DIY to support the body at the rear ( and also stiffen the chassis)

Great to see your restoration and modification work. Nicely documented :D.

I was slightly disappointed not to see the Panda body, they are so unusual and I have a soft spot for them (I'd rather have a MK1 Uno though my first 1:1).

BUT the Jeep body looks so good on the CC01, hope you get it finished soon.

Nice restoration. I did and always will love the CC01 chassis. Compared to the new CC02, Tamiya created a real milestone in terms of integrity and simplicity. Great job for getting this one back in good condition, regarding where you had to start. Admittedly I am not such a fan of the progressive wheels you chose, but it has to please you in the first place.

A few steps ahead

Rear bumper, from CR01 Wrangler kit

Resizer-171734565559929.jpg

It forced me to revise the attachment system and make a new rear support

Now the posts are attached to the body

I closed the battery door and created a holder for the electronics

Resizer-17173456528115.jpg

But I need a few more millimeters to lengthen the wheelbase
