Short version: does tamiya have any thing in current production that is a truck kit (off road/grass capable) with a slipper clutch option?

I was thinking of getting a Tamiya 1/10 Aqroshot - DT-03T Chassis Kit, off road tires and bash the ever living fun out of it.  But, knowing I'll jump it, I want a slipper clutch.  I plan to use a brushed motor and nimh batteries.  (Maybe a tamiya brushless with nimh batteries.)

But, it seems the DT-03 slipper clutch hop up is no longer in production.

I'm just looking for something truck like (runs happily on grass as well as the driveway before it launches off a jump) which has a slipper clutch to lessen the damage I'll be doing to it.  (Or my son for that matter.  I'm tired of repairing spur and pinion gears.  He likes jumping and slamming on the brakes in the air to do cart wheels when it lands.)

But, I'm not sure Tamiya has anything in current production that fits these requirements?

I'm open to ideas.  Ideally cheaper car/truck.

Most of my current fleet is TT-02/TT-02Bs/TA-02/TA-02T and midnight pumpkins (cw-02 maybe?).

Thanks!

Note: I don't really want a buggy as I want it to be grass capable.  But, if a compatible truck tire option works with the body still, I might be interested in that.

I don't think there was ever a slipper available for the DT03. There is a ball diff from Tamiya for the DT03/DT02, though slipping would not be its primary function. The DT03/DT02 does have a very robust gearbox however, even without a slipper.

Otherwise, you'd be looking at something like the Rustler, which does have a slipper standard from the evil "T" company from Texas.

I have a DT-03T, with a 10.5t brushless motor on 2S LiPo and big Mad Bull tyres, which has been happily jumping for a couple of years now with no noticeable wear to the gearbox or drivetrain components. The 0.8 module spur is very robust, as is the rest of the gearbox and drivetrain, so don't let the lack of a slipper put you off. Fit a steel pinion and the truck does very nicely without one. :)

The best fix would be to get him to drive differently, cartwheels will break things with or without a slipper clutch, especially if you're running stock butter aluminum Tamiya pinions. Also, 4wd is almost necessary to get through grass, I'd go with a 4wd monster truck.

The recent Squash Van should do the job as far as getting through grass and jumps.

Funny story about that, as a kid we had a Rustler that was all but useless in the grass (the rear tires were shot, dunno why we never replaced them), of course my 4x4 toy grade Sears Lobo was generally fine on grass. Somehow that made it "better" to little kid me.

Years and years later one of my prerequisites for an off-road RC became "it should be good on grass!". I can say that even with good tires, the 2wd Rustler isn't very happy on grass.

The stock DT-03T tyres are awful on grass, and most other surfaces for that matter. However with Mad Bull tyres it becomes quite capable on grass, and with the similarly sized soft spiked tyres as supplied with the GF-01 Heavy Dump it becomes downright excellent!

No trucks from Tamiya with a slipper clutch sadly. There are trucks that don’t need a slipper like super clod buster , squash van, Blackfoot. For the Blackfoot you can get a ball diff from mip.

For a non Tamiya there is team associate re release of the rc10t coming this june which has a slipper clutch.

For that kind of care-free bashing, maybe something from Traxxas or Arrma would be better?

Arrma Gorgon for example should be pretty good and it is dirt cheap, but it is only 2wd, if that matters.

Of course there are multiple other brand options as well, but those two big ones came to mind the first.

The only difference between DT-03 and DT-03T are wheels and body mounts.. you could probably do a similar thing with TD2/4 to get the aqroshot body work.

Other than that, there was Asterion XV-01T kit, maybe there are still available somewhere

Reckon you could convert a TD2 to truck form reasonably easily. It comes with a bunch of long body posts that look truck shell friendly.

then fit the slipper mod.

This is my Aqroshot on Carson truggy wheels. It was driven a lot with a Carson 10T 3600KV Dragster Brushless system on 8,4 volt Nimh and 2s lipo's. Never complained and drives well on grass.

Here is mine on Mad Bull rubber:

I think big tyres suit the looks of the shell far better than the stock offerings, as well as vastly improving the vehicle's off-road capabilities.
