what is vintage?

Recommended Posts

hi all;

is there a timeline where a car is considered vintage?

what is the criteria?

would a car that came out in the early 2000 considered vintage?

is it only looks that determine? (is bbx vintage for example?)

many companies, like schumacher, have a timeline of 4wd cars dating to the 80s i think and continuing to this day. so where is the cutoff vintage/not vintage date? :)

your thoughts are welcomed...

might depend on category. When I think vintage buggies and trucks, I think early to mid eighties. When I think vintage touring cars, I think mid to late nineties.

Ask 100 people, and you'll get 100 different answers.

For me, it's anything before the "T-Maxx Era," which is when the focus shifted from cool-looking and fun with at least a nod towards scale realism to all-out performance even if it looked silly. The cheerfulness went away during that time, and the whole feeling shifted towards a more brutal interpretation of fun - "this thing is so fast and capable it's going to pummel the enjoyment out of you, like it or not." Even a Tamiya Wild Dagger, released around the same time, feels more friendly and approachable than a T-Maxx or any of its clones. The fun has come back in recent years, but it's still nothing like the joy and optimism of 25-30 years ago.

For race cars, I guess you could call it anything that's 3 or 4 generations old now. So RC10B3, Losi XXX, etc could be considered vintage now, as could a first-generation Xray or HPI touring car. It's the point at which it stops being just old and uncompetitive and starts getting "wow, I haven't seen one of those in forever" comments.

But again, that's just my interpretation.

In the UK it's anything that's on the list for the Iconic series (well pretty much)

As far as Tamiya is concerned, I'd say it's the first 100.

I can understand the first 100 being significant, but I think you need to include some touring cars in there like the M-01 and a TA-01? Theyre what I think a lot of people remember when it comes to Tamiya as much as the early off roaders.

EDIT theres 2x TA-01's within the first 100, the Celica at 58086 and the R32 GTR at 58099. So first 100 sounds good to me

My interpretation is that which one is vintage has little to do with being in the first X models released, but rather is part of a list that grows every day so to speak, since today's cars will be vintage... one day. A reasonable definition of vintage is perhaps "something that was released during your childhood" but of course it doesn't work if you're still in your teens 😉
