what happened to the plasma dash?

Recommended Posts

I forgot the brand name but I recently bought a Duracell 1/32 mini racer, it's 2wd which can be quite fun when it drifts round the corner.

Hypersonic? HyperCars? Something like that.

Cool!: https://treasurevalleyantiques.com/products/vintage-1989-imperial-hypersonic-bullet-car-19-mobil-1-duracell-formula-1-black-copper-white-5-3-4-long-plastic-and-metal-die-cast-toy-race-car-vehicle?variant=42757093916910

Obviously modelled on a Benneton F1 B188 or B189 from 88/89. Chassis not identical to the Tamiya Mini F1 range but in the same mold. Probably fits on the standard track.

I too am extremely interested in finding/making the fastest brushed motor possible, so I commend you for helping this effort.  between these motors, the Doyushas and others, I hope to get as close as possible to 110,000 rpm at 12 volts, with good reliability.

🤣

I thought I am crazy enough to hook up a 1S to one of my car.

a plasma dash should get 60,000 from basic calculations IIRC, but I just want to see how close I can get.  I absolutely dont expect to get anywhere near that, but how close can I get?  thats what I want to know!

I assume as long as motor temp is okay.... it should be able to take higher voltages? I mean I also use 12V to break in stock mini 4wd silver cans.... (not for carbon brush ones.. lol)

they shouldn't have a problem.  29,000 RPM/3 Volts = 9,667 KV, so 9,667 x 12 = 116,000 potential RPM, but I should really get a couple samples to test and a laser tachometer to get real world data.  If we add the potential for ball bearings, silver graphite brushes, and better balancing on top of that, how fast can 12 Volts get us?  That's what keeps me up at night at least.

I don't think it is the heat or voltage that is the problem, it is the total RPM. Brushless motors have a RPM limit of 100k. Higher than that and something risk failing or exploding. The parts cannot take the forces structurally.

Awaiting the deliver of all my new motors, but in the mean time I can confirm that a plasma dash in a Wild Mini 4wd with the (very rare) high speed gear set goes at about 12 or 13 kph and WILL get round the loop on the Mini 4wd circuit.

The problem is keeping it on the track consistently round the bends. Current plans involve low level weights.

OK, nerd alert …

I tested the following motors with these results …

Silver can FA-130

Tamiya Plasma Dash

Auldey Super Power

Auldey Fighting Power

Unparalleled!

Claimed RPM

13,800 rpm ??

25,000 rpm

25,000 rpm

33,000 rpm

66,000 rpm

Km/h in test mule (F-MA chassis, stock in all regards)

19 Km/h (already run in)

38 Km/h (already run in)

34 Km/h (fresh from box)

39 Km/h (fresh from box)

54 Km/h (fresh from box – terrifying)

I used the official Tamiya speed checker.

Made some quick comparison photos below, but my conclusions are …

  • The Auldey motors are not perfect clones of the Plasma Dash, but are very close. Main differences are visible on the end bell (second from last pic).
  • They are both fast, and I would imagine that after running for a while the 'Super Power' would hit similar speeds to my already broken in Plasmas Dash, and that the ' Fighting Power' would go further beyond it.
  • The Unparalleled motor was positively dangerous! No way for me to know if it really could deliver 66,000 rpm, but a 14 Km/h speed advantage over the rest of the field is pretty staggering considering that a plasma Dash is genuinely banned from most competitions for being too quick.
  • If you want what the Plasma Dash offers but don't want to spend huge money and don't mind the knock-off label, I think an Auldey Fighting power will meet your needs!
  • If your aim is to injure people and pets, go Unparalleled! *JOKE* Please don't injure people or pets, but please do take actual precautions before putting this motor out in the wild.

Mine is missing the original plastic container, and the background is ripped (and would normally be blue).

I am actually stunned by your test results. I never expect such a poor looking item to be that fast. Never judge a book by its cover or a motor by its greasy label!

I suppose all the Tamiya products are part of a 'Formula' that is designed for fairness, not outright maximum power. I don't think the Unparalleled motor can play a useful part in the racing ecosystem, but is fun for a laugh, or might have useful application in other contexts.

Now we just need to see how the Doyusha motors compare, and I also want to modify one of those Unparalleled motors to have ball bearings and silver graphite brushes!  Thanks for your major contribution!

Digging into my stock to pick hopups for my next build and discovered I actually have one of these.

Dare I use it...?
