58742 Hornet Evo coming!

Recommended Posts

This is a incredible release! I have updated my son's re-re hornet recently. Now its got too much power and flips so easily on turns. Its been frustrating at times for him. I have been thinking of picking up another more modern buggy for him that can take jumps & high speed cornering better. I went to a different tire / wheel combo to help with high speed hopping. I am 100% buying the components from this to update his hornet and get the handling to match the speed. Would be great if Tamiya release a "kit" to update original hornets, as someone earlier in the thread mentioned.

Guy's do you all realize that our brains will be going crazy when driving this new hornet?

we are so used and trained to that hornet hopper classic sound what's going to happen when you see the same car but that sound no longer comes from it anymore?

You'll quickly realize that it's a Hornet/Dt02 hybrid...  In today's RC world, that's probably a good thing and a nice addition to your vintage Hornet.

I must have missed it when people were clamouring for a Hornet with a different rear end bolted on to it.

Here we are, patiently waiting for a 959, Blazer, Ranger XLT, Falcon & Avante 2001, and then they go and do this. They are a strange company sometimes. When was the last genuinely exciting vintage release that they did? The Egress? Mountain Rider? Since then, nothing to get people in a frenzy.

Part of the Hornet’s charm is how elegantly simple the design is. Nothing cluttered or out of place. This new version seems to undo that design completely.

Knowing me though I will still end up buying one.

I agree with you 100% about this release. The hornet gearbox is bulletproof so dont need to change it and this is just a money grab in my opinion.

A money grab would be a simple red or blue edition.  Some work has gone into this, Tamiya should get some credit for doing something new IMHO  :)

I think flames on the Evo are a nod to the Super Hornet.

That vid looks good. The front arms are clearly bowed (not flat as it looks like in the boxart) to give decent shock geometry.

I hope they have sorted something with the battery door. With a new mounting section for the trans at the rear there might be something in that?

I don't think the weight balance will be that bad. On my Ultra buggies one good thing is they fit square shorty lipos and you can push them all the way forward.

The decals on the Super hornet are AWSOME. They are not flames!!!!

Sorry if someone already mentioned this but if the Hornet Evo has a narrowed rear end, might that not be a nice factory option for narrowing the too-wide DT02-based Holiday Buggy? Just have to worry about narrowing the front then.

Also, still loving this upcoming release. Maybe the geometries are a bit off or there was a better way to do it, but, in the end, its a plastic toy car that will probably bring me lots of joy, lol.

Seems Tamiya have used the original chassis but added parts to reinforce the front damper mounts:

The above diagram is from the Rising Fighter instructions, I believe.    Hornet Evo may be similar, but it does not show how the front camber links attach to the chassis.  There is probably a second molding that attaches from the underside of the chassis.

Honestly, I really think this is a great product and I have no doubt it will fly off the shelves and bring a lot of happiness to a great number of enthusiasts. For me, it's the flames. Why the flames?! Maybe it just reminds me of my first attempt many, many years ago:

One good aspect of this kit is the body comes Un-Painted!!   It means we have complete freedom to choose alternative colour schemes.

The vintage 80's style "The Hornet" decal set can be used if you don't mind some extra cost outlay.

By money grab do you a mean a business, doing its normal business for revenue so it can pay staff that enjoy working for a company that keep it interesting in designing new products.  🤣🤣

Totally agree!  A money grab would be the Holiday Buggy.  The Hornet Evo looks to be well thought out with vintage parts from the original along with "newish"  re engineered parts from another long time favorite car.

to me this looks to be a decent refresh of an iconic car that still keeps the original styling, I think this will be going onto my Christmas present wish list

A money grab would be a touring car with friction shocks, poor steering, old bodyshells, and plastic bushings!

Oh wait...

Fantastic idea, but personally I'm not keen on how the chassis upgrades have been executed.

It's a real Tamiya, it's a Hornet, it's Anytime Baby!

If the upgrades had been done in the best possible way it wouldn't be anymore. No harm intented just my opinion.

I agree that it needs to keep the character of the original.  However, after 40 years they could've done a bit more than this.

Kyosho's Scorpion re-release came out 10 years ago and is a great example of updating an old chassis.

Kyosho's Scorpion

Never had one of these so I have no idea what they changed? I had a Turbo Mid BITD and I have a new one now. On this they added a slipper and the belt tensioner. The new turbo scorpion has a slipper too?

Kyosho and Tamiya has always been in a different league IMO. Nothing has changed there :D

No-longer-14-year-old you has a responsibility to make this dream come true!

Although admittedly I haven't got one, I think flames and RC cars are a match made in heaven.

Great to see. Shame it's taken years of amazing fan creations, and I doubt people will officially get the credit they are due, so let's hear it for @Pintopower

Looks similar to what Taniya did on the GH2/Super Hornet. The flat back end is a nice addition too.
