TT02 as a trail vehicle

Recommended Posts

So my son has a hot wheels that is based on a Porsche 911…

I’ve seen a few Porsche TT02 lifted but I’m curious if I lifted a TT02, locked the diffs and threw on a set of CC01 tyres would it be capable as a trails vehicle?

Obviously based on the hot wheels lol.

I have a XL wheelbase M06 that can be used as a trail truck, so it should be possible. Finding the right wheels and tyres is key (mine are 75mm diameter crawler wheels), though this is also on the M-chassis RA rally hubs for a little extra clearance.

It can run around on gentle off road walks,  but can't do anything particularly technical.

I've seen someone try to build a trail truck of sorts from a TT02, you're looking at locked diffs, smallest possible pinion, and bigger wheels. Ideally you'd want to start with a TT02R, they come with metal dogbones which will allow you to raise the right height more than stock.

I'd really reccomend some aftermarket tires though, I had a batch of all sorts of CC-tires and they all felt too hard for any real crawling.

Good to know within reason it is possible to make a decent trails vehicle, keep thinking I will just buy a crawler but I like sticking with famous, I’ve had cc01 but didn’t bond with it.

My original thoughts were lift, lock diffs, CV joints and the cc01 rock block tyres from the unimog 425 and a smaller pinion, so seemed to have ticked the boxes.

Tamiya actually released a T version of the TT02 called the Sandshaker. It wasn’t really popular. It had the same body as the Stadium Raider. Came with a TT motor and white CVA’s. It’s no crawler but not a bad little trail runner. I have one. The original body is in store , mine now has Subaru Brat rally support car body on it.IMG_0132.jpg

That’s pretty funky!
Next question just to throw something else in the bag, would 1.55 rims fit?

A long time ago I had a TT-01E converted to a trail car. It worked quite well.

Even with the shortest gearing (FDR 8.35) it was too fast. This was solved by using a 55T motor.

In the case of the TT-02, it can go to much shorter gearing (FDR 11.38) making it more manageable. I would recommend using a 45T or 35T motor.

This looks like a static model 😲

I have put 1.55” on my TT02 before, they were the generic steel beadlocks with the smaller 80mm trailer style tyres and they fitted fine.

I'm sure it could be made to do well. Some TT02B towers and longer shocks would give some more suspension travel if needed. The gearing is the bigger issue, a 2:1 or 3:1 reduction is needed to trade some speed for torque.

As an example, I use a 3:1 reduction on my Telluride - drops the basher chassis right into crawler territory. A 2:1 would be excellent for trail running.
