Help indentifying a vintage car

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I recently bought (again ...) an old car on second hand market for a good price (65€).

The fact that the car has two belts decided me to fill my card numbers up and click "Buy".

I received it, dismantled, cleaned, and looked for the model (to put my hands on the manual).
And here is the problem : I cannot find the correct reference ...

Linked to this post you will find some pictures I took :

I took it out of the box just after receiving the package. Note the old mechanical speed control with its two ceramic resistors.

The parts are now clean :

Lower and upper deck chassis with the only two aluminium parts (motor mount).
It is not carbon nor aluminium, but certainly Fiber Plastic Reinforced (FPR)

The two belts. I put a string every 10 teeth to avoid mistake. It should be a 179T (did not count the little one so precisely, I would say it is a 54T one but I can be wrong).

Some others parts. Arms, knuckles, and a 90T pinion (written on it, I did not count).

The last important info : the car has two ball diff

I think it is a "HPI RS4 Rally" but it is not as easy because :
- arms and gear boxes (front and rear) are not exactly the same than in the manual
- chassis shape is not exactly the same
-
what is this mechanical speed controller ? Looks like an old Kyosho ... Previous owner could have use anything he already had from an another car but the metal part protecting the resistors seems to fit in perfectly, like if it was made for it.
- HPI RS4 Rally does not have two ball diff (optioned ?)
- I thought about HPI Rally because the body is a "Peugeot 206WRC", but looking closely I can see that holes have been custom made (away from the little markers on the Lexan shell)
- I am unable to rebuild the car with the Rally manual ...
For example, there should be a mechanism to give the correct tension to the main belt inside the rear gearbox but the plastic parts are not meant for it.
Instead I have the impression that this mechanism should be outside, on the aluminium part and is missing.

Well, any help will be very much welcomed !
(I can upload more pictures if needed, of course)

Robbe in Germany had a buggy/touring car chassis that looks similar a long time ago. The buggy was called RB 540, the touring car version TEC-10. Yours looks like a more basic version of the TEC-10. Unfortunately, I don't know the original manufacturer of this.

That's definitely not HPI. The mechanical speed control looks like a ripoff of a Kyosho design, but it's definitely not Kyosho either.

It looks a little like HoBao cars from the late '90s/early/00s (sold here in the USA under the OFNA name), but those designs were copied so often it's hard to know its actual provenance. But I would start with HoBao or CEN.

Some hints about this car, in case somebody looks for it :

I read (and confirmed by looking at the parts) that most of parts are compatible with "duratrax gp2"
