El Gecko 1428 Posted August 7 Watching track and field, and suddenly there's an RC car out there! A quick search and I've learned something new today. Apparently they're considered "field support robots" and they retrieve things like shot put after it's thrown (also apparently it's been going on awhile, so apologies if this is old news, I've been under this rock over here) https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08-06/what-are-the-rc-cars-at-the-olympics/104189918 What a cool job!

Mad Ax 10034 Posted August 7 Great promotional opportunity for the 1:1 car manufacturers too - and I actually really like that these look like real cars, not just wheeled robots
Mad Ax 10034 Posted August 7 Quoting the link above - "they modelled their RC after a pickup truck" - er - pretty sure that is just an RC pickup truck...
chris.alex 1050 Posted August 7 It would be nice to see "RC at the Olympics" as its own sport. 🙂
Badcrumble 4406 Posted August 7 Well, if 'old skool' activities like skateboarding and break dancing are in, why not RC racing?!!

It is the same one as shown in the first picture. it has a neat 'holder' for the javelin tip on the roof. Like the kind of thing that used to hold a pen on a desk. Interestingly, the bodyshell looks to me like a Toyota Bz4x - Toyota being the 'mobility' sponsor of the Olympics. Toyota shells are commonly found on Tamiya....start your rumour here.....next CC-02 bodyshell? Surely can't be a TT-02....

Pretty neat, but the car must be heavy to counterbalance a javelin placed that way.

They look to be bigger than 1:10 scale, so I'm guessing they are pretty heavy chassis and I guess have been customised and tested to make sure they can handle it. Could be based on a 1:8 rallycross platform as they've got great suspension, loads of power options and are very low-slung allowing for lots of custom brackets inside to hold the various objects they pick up. Looks a similar size to my HoBao Hyper GT rallycross car 1 hour ago, Badcrumble said: Like the kind of thing that used to hold a pen on a desk. isn't that just gravity..? 2

lupogtiboy 490 Posted August 7 At the last World Cup or the Euros, can't remember which, an RC VW ID.4 was used to take the ball onto the pitch
ADRay1000 423 Posted August 7 Ok, I saw that the other night but thought I was hallucinating.

Possibly it would be the RC manufacturer sending their people out and providing the vehicles etc? To be honest, I'm more excited to see an RC doing "real work" as opposed to racing and bashing as per the usual. I've wanted to build an RC lawnmower since I first saw the movie Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and since it snows here I'd also love to do an RC snowblower. I just love seeing RCs either adapted or specifically designed for other uses.

TurnipJF 9761 Posted August 7 That looks bigger than 1/8 scale. 1/5 maybe?
Mad Ax 10034 Posted August 7 23 minutes ago, TurnipJF said: That looks bigger than 1/8 scale. 1/5 maybe? My 1/8 rallycross car is based on a 1/8 buggy, but with touring car tyres. So it's way wider than what you'd normally call a 1/8. But you're right, it's definitely a large-scale vehicle. I've love to see under the body.
No Slack 502 Posted August 8 If I remember well they used Mini Coopers at the former Olympics. These Mini's were maybe 1/6 (?) and carried javelins. Edit: London

For scale, these tyres are nearly 4" diameter. https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/1352608
