I think it would be a good idea to let people have avatars in their posts like many other forums maybe one to consider with the recent updates Chris[;)][;)][;)]

XanderP, I personally hate the avatars.

I can't see the point of them, and the moving "Animated GIFs" are truly annoying...

Just my 2p.

Can some explain the difference to me between avatars and the graphics people are free to use in their signatures apart from the position on the screen?

There are two things that annoy me about certain forms. The first is gigantic signatures, viewed one forum recently and one person had so many pictures in his signature line they actually filled the screen. Tamiyaclubs 75 pixel rule makes the actual subject more important than peoples signatures.

The second thing that riles me about forums are avatars. When I was on dialup I gave up on using one forum as one or two users had animated gifs as avatars that were so big it could take 5-10 minutes to fully load a forum page.

By an avatar I mean the little picture in the corner of the screen next to your name maybe like a picture of your favourite car in your collection, kind of a like a sneak peek to your showroom. But I can appreciate the point of few of those dial up connections so maybe a little check box somewhere or other allowing them to be turned off/on.

[:I] is a signature like a line that divides your post so you can add say a link to your site or showroom or what cars you have[:I] If you can post a small pic in your post automatically I would have thought people would do it?

Yes, the signature line is the section below this message which has the visit my showroom graphic and link. If people want to put images in there they can, but not many people actually do.

I have forums with avatars, and this one without them, I actually quite like it without them, lot quicker to load ( even though I am on cable so thats not a huge deal) but much less cluttered as well.

Whilst we're on the subject, would it be possible to have an option to hide all the icons on the page? I never use them myself - it would be great to have a more compact, text only style of board...

And just to be really picky, why is the left hand (document) icon at the top of each entry aligned to the top where the others are aligned to the middle?

IMHO They are cool on uncluttered pages, but notice on bottom post in pic the huge blank space after a short post by someone not using a signature.

But just go to any games forums to witness the hideous effect both signature and avitar can have [:(]

Its all down to how people use them really (says he with a broken signature [:I] Yes I'll sort it out sometime)

Avatars - do we *need* 'em?

Nope - you've got your sig to use, if you can't do something nice with that you're not gonna do anything nice with an avatar either ;)

As I'm still on dialup I prefer the site without any excess graphics. As already stated, on some sites that allow this sort of thing (most uS forums I belong to) it takes forever to download the pages and I get fed up and go elsewhere. This goes along with my other pet hate of people who reply to a topic AND INCLUDE the original posted pictures with their reply thus doubling the time it takes to load the page AARRGGHH!!!

I do like avatars as they show a sense of creativity to a dull page of writing and I think check boxes would be good idea to make it fare for people who dont want them or are on dialup. What I do not like is the HUGE pictures left by some people in their sig especially when they write like two words and there sig takes up half the page!

Propably you already know it, but you can disable image download also in your browser settings.

Hey Martin, that is a nice idea, shame all the forums didn't apply that same method.
