With the promise of forthcoming(?) spares and interest in the RC10 at the moment, I figured I should take the opportunity to get started on the now 9 original RC10s I have floating around. I have themes mapped out for most of them at this point. Currently, I'm looking at colors.

What polycarbonate spray would closest approximate the main body color on this RC10:

Furthermore, digging up an age old question about box art colors, why is Tamiya Camel Yellow become the default color for box art RC10s? Though everything from printing technology variations to being sun faded in hobbyshop windows may have affected perceptions, the RC10 was always more orange than yellow in my eyes. This was verified years back when Associated released some photos of the box art car's body (if not the actual chassis).

What's above is not what we use today below...

Although it seems Associated themselves have defaulted to using Camel Yellow (probably because its easy to source).

I forgot about that burgundy one in RCCA! What a sharp-looking car. That was probably an old Pactra color; I'm not sure what would be the closest match. Maybe check Vallejo and other airbrush acrylics? They have a pretty good range of metallics.

Can't wait to see what you come up with for the others.

Funny you mention this, because I felt like quite the rebel painting my 40th this past weekend with Tamiya PS-62 Pure Orange. Like you, I feel the box art is more orange than yellow, and I see enough of the camel yellow with some of my Tamiya models and my 1:1 Bronco every day. I think the orange will really set this apart. I haven't backed it yet, and don't think I will. I first used the pearl clear as well, and it looks spectacular IMO, very 80's. Can't wait to sticker it up and complete it.

Achieving the perfect box-art RC10 is tricky.  I painted this one many years ago; It's Camel Yellow backed with Orange.

I've always thought it was too orange but after viewing the photos in your post, I'm having second thoughts.

Using Camel Yellow without a backing color does appear a bit too yellow, now that you mention it.

The orange has been pretty much accepted as a custom mix from Chris Chan.

The basic scheme of the burgundy one was one that Curtis Husting (who reportedly painted some of the early bodies) did is various colors.

Looking closely at it, there seems to be some airbrush work in the fade around the stripes. Bottled Pactra candy apple red might be it. Whether I have the confidence to try and duplicate it is another matter, lol.
