Time for a new 1/10 Group C Car by Tamiya

Recommended Posts

With the BBX buggy kit, Tamiya reintroduced themselves as a company that can produce modern, high quality kits for scale enthusiasts that utilize quality hardware and plastic materials. Well, I believe it’s time they did the same thing with an updated interpretation of the 1/10 Group C chassis. This car would have modern materials, modern pan-car suspension, hex head hardware and a highly detailed body. My choice for the body would be the venerable Porsche 962c as raced by the factory in 1986 and 1987. It would be nice if it had a “quick-change” mechanism for the battery pack to enable endurance races with pit stops to change the battery! Just putting it out there.

This is a 1/24 scale body for the Serpent S240. I wish we had something like this for the Tamiya Group C chassis.

I like that idea, especially the quick-change battery.  A couple of years back I was in conversation about doing an endurance race using the Group C re-release, but the challenge was finding a motor that would last for the entire race and still make for a challenging drive.  Perhaps a modern chassis that allows for best possible cooling would be good for that.

On August 25 I said that it was about time that Tamiya make a new Group C chassis and that I thought it should be a Porsche 962c as it was the most prolific racer of it’s time. Then, a few days later Tamiya announces the 956L and preorders sell out in the UK just a few days later! This supports my belief that a Porsche 956/962 would be a top selling kit. Please, Tamiya, make the next Group C chassis/car a 962c as pictured below:

PS: If you would buy a 962c kit if Tamiya made one then please tell Tamiya so by liking this post please!

So what Group C car would you all like Tamiya to do next? Nissan R90CK, Toyota 88 or 89 CV or something from the 3.5 era like the Toyota TS-010?

The Toyota 88/89 is a good call. Couple of my favourites are the Peugeot 905 and the Nissan R89C - the proper spaceship looking cars especially anything with rear wheel covers.

I would also love to see some of the 1960s and earlier 1970s era Le Mans cars but very unlikely. Sadly.

Mazda 787B in Renown livery

I meant a new car, not a re-release of a prior car.

Personally I'd like to see two new releases in this area:

1.

A fully loaded version of the existing Group C chassis with all the compatible hop-ups included, like they did with the F104 Pro II, and like several of us have created on our own, with roll damping built in. This would come with a generic Group C shell that can be decorated in a variety of liveries to represent any car you like, again like the F104 Pro II.

2.

An all-new all-carbon Le Mans-style chassis with all the latest tech, topped with a choice of shells representing the current grid of Hypercars, but compatible with the classics, kinda like the F104 V2 Pro.

Gordon Murray T50, but on a hoped-up/modernised Group C (in the @TurnipJF mould) would be a nice update of the road going NSX like releases. There’s a scale model kit so, I’d assume, the license wouldn’t be too much of an issue

As to point 1, I would lobby for the 962c body as it could be liveried in many different ways. I saw a rellay of a 1987 German Supercup race on YouTube that had one Sauber C9, one Jaguar xjr8 and around 9 to 10 962s! If not for the 962, there would be much fewer cars. Upgrades to the current chassis might drive the price up too high-at least include bearings.

As for point 2, I agree that Tamiya needs to come up with a modern chassis for their Group C line and more modern Hypercars.

Tamiya can do both and release a new, modern 200mm 1/10 pan type chassis that people can race and enjoy because Tamiya will make lots of them. With the 962c body and spares readily available there will be plenty of people wanting to race.

You are no doubt correct in that it would be more expensive than the base version, but based on the pricing of Tamiya's other hopped-up "Pro", "R" and "MS" chassis, I'm confident that it would be cheaper than buying the hopups separately.

Another one with the rear wheel covers -  Alfa Se.

To me it makes them look like something from the future, even though theyre knocking on 35 years old

I would love to see some older stuff - the Porsche 917k, the 908/02 Spyder or something a bit more far out like the Matra MS 640. :D

Cool car, but not as pretty as the Toyota TS-010 which had wheel covers in its first years.

I really like all the suggestions here.
To be honest, I find the Porsche 956 and its evolutions almost the most boring, because I've seen them a thousand times before.
I have and have always had a flair for exotic cars and underdogs.
But of course, that's just me.

I haven't seen a Simca (or a Matra) for a long time - must be forty years or something. The Murena was the last one I can remember. I have to read up on the history, seems to be some twists and turns there ...
