Hello. I am about to build my first tamiya kit, a re-re blackfoot. I have the kit, fast eddy sealed bearings and a MIP diff. I am ordering the  radio gear, tool kit battery and a motor Tuesday. I am wanting an upgraded motor will a little more speed, but mostly more torque. Were I have to drive most often is a pretty small lawn so more torque seems like a good idea. I could drive in the street as well, but I want to protect the ABS body as much as i can.( I love the 80-86 ford F series)

Anyway I was planing on a dirt tuned motor but saw that the gt tuned is also rated for off road and has a good bit more torque. How would the gt tuned motor do in a blackfoot in grass? should I stick with the dirt tuned?

Honestly, I'd try it with the stock 540 first. The Blackfoot is geared pretty low, and it always seemed to go through grass just fine.

@MadAtComputer, great kit you have chosen. I built this kit at Christmas last year and agree with Markbt73, the stock motor is well suited to this kit and has a pretty darned good tirn of speed imo. Up to you but I'd certainly try it with the kit motor first. I was actually pretty surprised just how quick it is in stock form with Bearings. I drive mine on grass frequently too.

It's a great car so enjoy it whichever way you decide to go.

I watched some videos of the blackfoot with the stock 540. I agree it dose well. hmm. I do have the money set aside for a motor, and it makes me fell a bit better about spending the cash on the mip diff lol. I think I am going to go with the dirt tuned. And I will have a silver can siting around for a future grasshopper too :D

The old silver can motor really wakes up with a 2S LiPo. Give it go first, you might be surprised.

I don't have any lipo batteries or a charger for them. I probably will at some point. Getting back into r/c after well over a 20 year absence. I have a 3000mah nimh ordered for it as it is what I am familiar with.

I ordered my stuff today. A flysky GT3C, a spare receiver for a future kit, a savox budget metal gear servo, kimbrough medium servo saver, the dirt tuned motor, a 3000 mah nimh battery and charger and a tamiya tool kit. I still need to figure out what color I want to paint it, or if I want to do it box art.

I still run Nimh myself and many of my vehicles still run the stock 540 silvercan. If I feel the need for a bit more torque and speed, I usually slip in a relatively cheap Tamiya Torque Tuned motor. They give a nice little kick over the stock motor without making those old re-release designs undrivable. I always try the stock motor first though.

my only other R/C at the moment is a traxxas stampede with a 8.4v nimh. It's a blast. About 15 min run time before it slows down. other than bearings it's stock. far better than the old nicd batteries.

I will give the silver can a go first the next time round. I don't think the dirt tuned will be over kill, it is still a 27 turn.

Edit: thought I should clarify, i got a 7.2v battery for my blackfoot

Lipo makes a huge difference. Even though a 2S has lower voltage on paper over a 8.4v NiMh it still be a performance jump with the Lipo. 
 

Lipo is also smaller and lighter. And doesn’t go flat if you leave it unused for a while. They also don’t get lazy like NiMh does. NiMH can take several cycles to “wake up” a battery that hasn’t been used in a while. 
 

I’m not against NiMh. I used them when they first came out back in the 1990’s. But Lipo is such a massive game changer. More so than brushless motors IMO. I haven’t used an NiMh pack for over a decade now. Maybe longer. 
 

If you are in the U.K.  Hobbyking is still quite good for batteries. And sometimes on eBay or Amazon. Sometimes you have to be creative with shapes and sizes to fit older models though. 
 

Multi chemistry chargers are cheap too. I’ve been using an iMax B6AC since getting into Lipos. Does all that I need and handy to be able to charge LiFe and other chemistries too. Think you can still them for around £30. 
 

As for performance in older models. It is surprising how well a basic silver can setup can perform. But most of the models take to more power ok (think the diff is a weak spot on the Blackfoot though). I run a 12x6 brushed race motor in my Lunchbox, a 10.5T brushless in my Konghead. A 13.5T brushless in my Mad Bull. 
 

Although on the flip side my Grasshopper still has the 380 silver can in. I was amazed at how well it went and it felt just the right sort of performance. I’ve also got a silver can in my newly finished Fighting Buggy. A quick blast up the road on 2S yesterday and it is sufficiently fast enough for now.

I know the topic was discussed over a month ago, but I agree with trying the stock motor first, especially if running with a hard body. If using a lexan body to bash with, then going a little bit faster is not as big of a worry. Just for certain cars, don't go with brushless.

I went with the tamiya dirt tuned motor,  a 27 turn brushed motor with replaceable brushes. It drives very well with it. Lots of torque. I will be trying the stock motor first on my next kit though.

Welcome back to the hobby. I recently got my Super Blackfoot out the loft been there for atleast 20years. I would stick with the stock 540 for now thats what I have done with mine seemed powerful enough for the job.
