Low profile nylock wheel nuts - anyone have a source?

Recommended Posts

Apols if this is covered elsewhere, but I'm after replacement M4 wheel nuts that have fewer threads through the metal portion before the nylock insert, i.e. they have a lower profile and will work better when fewer axle threads are available.

Has anyone managed to get hold nuts like this? If so pointers to a (UK) source would be really helpful.

I have found online aluminium nuts that are along these lines, but I'd prefer steel.

M5? Unusual size for RC. But you might have more luck finding a low profile serrated steel nut, these grip harder than nylocs anyway.

I've not found any, but these would be useful! (I would say I find the flange on lots of the nuts you get with RC cars not that helpful as again it increases this distance

Some lock nuts I've got do seem shallower than others, I've seen 4.7 and 5.0 mm given online, so there might be some different types too. Certainly some of mine are thicker than others.

On paper this locks perfect, but it doesn't actually look like a locking nut.

@Nikko85 those look interesting. If they are like as pictured, I wonder how they 'lock'. I'll do some digging.

Ah, those are lock nuts that are designed to keep an adjacent nut in place. They could be used as wheel nuts, with some thread lock.

A brand called "Luminier" used to make the perfect low profile nylock in M4, and in aluminum. They seem to be gone.

The serrated nuts are the same thickness, but beware! They work by chewing the wheel into matching serrations which is better suited to disposable soft plastic found on racing wheels (typically pre-glued throw away sets) than Tamiya hard plastic scale wheels.

Tamiya makes 42282 in steel for this purpose, they are not nyloc but serrated as above. I think they work equally as well, but not as good if you constantly remove wheels without replacing the wheel periodically as you’ll potentially slowly wear away the wheel face. But that issue is no different than the nyloc part on the nut failing after 10-20 uses.

tamiya does also make 54080 low profile nyloc but its not flanged, and i’m not certain what the material is.  That being said you’d likely get away without the flange on a m chassis size wheel.

The flange also adds a lot of distance between the wheel face and the nylon locking part. For some of my trucks I've had to go non-flanged as there was just not enough thread otherwise to engage the nylon part.

Another option is also half nuts and the a serrated lock washer.

Another vote for serrated. I used to have my nuts falling off 🙄 but never have a problem since using serrated.
