I've never done any "crawling" but I get the sense that it would benefit from some ballast for additional traction. Would that work do you think?

Yes, I think it is a little top heavy, giving some limits to side slopes and steep climbs. Although I'm not really unhappy with how it goes.

I'd like to try some wheel weights, my only reservation here is, the tyres are nicely glued to the rims. And I suspect un-glueing them will be somewhat of a mission. And I'm not really looking at buying new rims or tyres currently, as it gets pricey.

My other thought it, I wonder if I could get some brass plates made up to add as a nose weight (bit like you might get on a farm tractor) and mount in place of the blue alloy plate I currently have:

That's a great idea, would look cool too!

I'm a bit late to this party, but I'm loving this project.  I've avoided going down the crawler route with a G6-01 because of the lack of a good 1:1 car to base it on, but I love what you've done here.

Bizarrely, I've also been thinking about turning a G6-01 backwards, although for different reasons.

I haven't looked into the practicalities of it, but I was considering turning the centre axle into a steering axle.  If you were able to do that (and remove the steering from the "rear" axle) then you could probably increase the steering on your "front" axle and not worry about the wheels binding.  I expect that would make it much easier to drive.  Being able to properly lock out the rear axle might make it a lot more stable on climbs.

Tuning suspension on 6x6 vehicles can be tricky - I've had challenges both with my G6-01 basher and my 6x6 crawler.
