TT-02 Diffs Lock Levels.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am looking for information, what is your experience with TT-02 Diffs or not oil Diffs in general. I want to create list what can be used to achieve particular lock levels.

First position is open Diff, last is fully locked.

1. Dry gears or just shiny layer of Tamiya Grease

2. Diff packed with Tamiya Grease

3. AW Grease

4. Diff Putty

5. Spool #54649 for standard Diff and whole new unit #22047

As you can see, there are not too many options.

I read on excellent guide linked below, that 500k oil can be used without leaks in standard diff. Have any of you tried this? Does it mean that diff will be dry as with grease, or just there will be no huge leak during first few runs? 500k oil is bit expensive and I prefer to ask first.

Any other tips? I read about plastic sheets, ear plugs etc. in gears, but I prefer "standard" solutions.

I did put pieces of silicone ear plugs in the unsealed diff of M-05, and it did work at first, but now it seems that those pieces have been displaced to the side of the gears or somewhere, as the diff seems fully open once again.

I thought about using those silicone earplugs as "seals" and filling the middle of the diff with 300k oil, but I haven't tested that yet.

Another solution could be the Bad Horsie diff grease, which seems to be well loved on the internet. But I would need to order that from the US of A, it would be a bit expensive.

@skom25 try 500000 oil and let us know. I'm pretty sure it'll leak. I tried packing with Shimano grease a few years ago (very thick, similar to Tamiya Grease) and it made an absolute mess.

TheRCRacer is a very competent and accomplished racer. It's possible that 500000 oil stays in there for a 5 min race but that doesn't mean it's a good idea for everyone.

Shimano Grease is in fact Motorex Bike Grease 2000 :P

I thought about Shimano Anti Seize, which is like white paste.

It seems that I will not experiment and just use AW Grease and standard grease as always.

Hi!
First post here. I'm on the way to rebuild a TL01LA that I'd like to ride off-road in the summer (like the Stadium Raider) and on an on-road carpet track in the winter. (I'll start a build post soon).
My goal was to buil 3 diffs, one almost locked to buil in the front for on-road, one just a bit locked for off-road front an on-road rear, and one totally free to place at the rear of the off-road version (and maybe on-road, for testing).
I've tried with 500k silicone oil, but it leaks even without being ridden. I've bought TRF diff putty but haven't tested it yet. It's quite difficult to get informations how to use it. I've read a bit of everything, from cr*p to miraculous stuff. And some people telling the gear have to be greased so they are easilly cleaned, other telling that there is no need for any grease (like the manual says). I'm a bit lost... But I think I've to try and make my own experience

Welcome to the forum and thank you for the feedback on leaking - as I wrote earlier, not surprised ;)

Building multiple diffs and testing them is a great idea and perhaps the only true way to know what works best for you.

I just bought 2 TT-02 diffs (a fat 4.5$ on RC Mart, lol) for that very purpose. It's easier than cleaning diff putty actually!
