Oops…

At least I had a spare to save me. Be careful when screwing down the receiver antenna support. I was a little off and while seating the screw, the antenna was pinched-off.

Snipped some plastic to enable maximum throw to the steering. Saw this in other threads.

Getting there. Not a whole lot of upgrades but I’ve been listening to those who know what works. Once I begin running her in, I’ll be able to see where I need my own upgrades. So, nothing really new here, just my own personal journey with the TT02.

Rear (dogbones) and front (universals) drive, as suggested.

Did you modify rear uprights to have full travel of suspension?

I did not know.
Please inform me on the operation.

edit: Figured out what you meant. Yes, I setup the front and rear full travel.

I ended up adding 3mm to each side of the upper suspension A-arms. I moved the wheels as shown until I found minimal equilibrium.

Apologies for the one armed photo, I used both hands for left and right.

After taking up the play in the forward A-arms, I found most of the residual play to be located here, at the pivot point. Again, nothing new, just my observation.

Do the upgrade bearing mechanisms take up this play? I’m looking at 2 to 3mm.

Thanks. I’m trying to look at it like my Nissan X-Trail or MGF. Some things are acceptable, some are not.

Just for sh@ts and giggles, I added a 2mm shim here, to the left side (driver’s view). Seems to have helped.

Added a 1mm shim to the right side. I’m happy with the outcome. Much tighter.

Any more play is found mainly in the ball-joints or wheel hubs.

edit: Front hub axial and radial play seem to be proportional. Working on it. Axial play seems to be 10mm +/-, radial maybe 5mm.

Alright, I got the protective cover squared away and it fits really well; I’m happy with it. I just need to revisit my cable management. There really isn’t too much I can do with it but I’ll try to tidy it up a bit. Anti-lawyer security stickers added just in case Citizen Dummy gets bit or burned.

The front wheels have some axial play that I need to look into.

I added 6mm shims to the right-side and 5mm shims to the left-side. Result: minimal axial play on the front wheels. Not really measurable, just a very slight play when moving by hand. Way better than before. I always leave a little play to compensate for unknown design tolerances.

Check if there is still some play with tightened wheels. My experience shows that wheel nut removes a lot of play.

Verified. Washers with wheel nuts = about 1mm of play each side. Before it was much more.

Today is garage spray booth day.
I paint over by the garage door (airflow) with the laundry window open, then move the parts over by the boiler. Things dry really well there, even in winter.

I love the amazon packing paper!

Stickers, good Lord, the stickers. What else can I say about the Gazoo stickers other than I now believe that I’m a very patient person. It took me a few gut-punch mistakes to finally arrive at a good process and even then, things would go south every now and then. I’m really thankful that Tamiya included a spare red and black color strip at the bottom of the decal sheet to fill/hide poor alignment gaps in the stickers. Someone also mentioned here on TC that hitting the stickers with a hair dryer helps to seat them better. That guy deserves a trophy.

Problem: While painting the headlight casings black, I had the body on the floor behind me but it wasn’t far enough away. The overspray made its way beyond skinny me and left its mark. I didn’t see it until I had sprayed in the white. Merde. Oh well, lesson learned. This will be the basher body.

Looks really good!

Do not worry too much about overspray. After first few runs you will forget about this, especially if you crash it :D

A stock TT-02 consistently seems to require 0.7mm of shims to get rid of the play, but without causing the bearings to bind. Your can use the 5mm shim set (53587) for this. It's uncertain whether it really makes a difference in handling :) but it is very satisfying to shim the play out!

Edit: congratulations on the body, not a small job to apply the gazoo livery stickers. The black over spray actually looks like scale damage :D It's not taking anything away from the final result. Bravo!

Well, there she is. Some flaws here and there but my first TT02 build. I’m happy with it and can’t wait to see how it runs! Snow last night so it’s going to be a little while before I can give it a go.

Probably going to chop those body mounts back a bit.

But leave 3-4 holes until you have tried rally blocks. They are larger diameter.
