Hi, I’ve got a retro Nissan king cab and recently I think the receiver unit or esc is playing up as when I was driving it it would drive itself at full speed without being able to control it. The receiver and esc is the original from about 1985 and I don’t know which part I would need to replace to sort this issue thanks.

I’d swap out the radio gear 1st.

It’ll be MHz, and we’ll behind the times.

As you have an ESC and not the original MSC, this should be ok.

But for the sake of £20 I’d put in a new ESC anyway.

What radio do you have?

If you can replace the frequency crystals, go to ebay or somewhere and buy a few sets. Just keep in mind that 27Mhz AM, 75Mhz AM and 75Mhz FM are not compatible with each other. Those were the most common radio frequencies, it should list what you have on the receiver.

Now if you want to get with the times like Grumpy said, go pick up a modern 2.4Ghz radio.

Sorry for late response, Thinking I might have to do a complete electric redo of esc, receiver and other parts wondering if anyone knows which ones will fit for complete redo? But also have a question of if anyone knows where to get a new set of tyres for the king cab?

The King Cab is quite old, but if you plan on having it be a runner, then most modern 2.2 truck tires should fit on the rims. A set of HPI Yokohama Geolander tires should do fine. Just be careful running the truck, parts are getting harder to find for them.

Now I'm thinking maybe I should sell my Hilux Monster Racer because it's not in good enough shape to be a shelf queen and stuff is to rare to run. 🤔

Got any pics of your Monster Racer. I may be interested. @MadAnt

I will have to dig it out of storage. I will sell it if you can pick it up in person, it's just the way I do deals(for now). DM me if you can travel to north NJ or  NY.

Hi. I'm in the UK. I won't be able to pick up. It'll still be nice to see pictures if you get time. Thanks for responding.

Oh the UK, that's a bit too far, even if I decide to ship it. Give me some time, I'll see if I can get it out for a photo.

Here it is. Due to the condition and the parts rarity, I really don't want to bother restoring it. Also, if parts were very easy to get, it would make a good light runner. 20241117_120707.thumb.jpg.f5b3d98c3fb7f25cffa0023e8a986de6.jpg20241117_120723.thumb.jpg.3e1338786ba489af0aacd11d1939dc23.jpg

It's got a crack in the chassis, the control arms are a bit chewed, scratches on the bottom and the transmission has a custom repair, so it definitely has condition issues.

Is it a Hilux Monster Racer or a Nissan King Cab? It probably does not matter. I'll probably make a for sale thread in the future maybe.

Nice. Thanks for sharing. Is that an original shell and gearbox? I haven't looked at my Kingcab for a while. But I don't remember the gearbox looking like that.

Looks like the Hi Lux shell was fitted to a King Cab chassis as there are 2 extra holes in the hood , the KC front body mounts are the same as the rear ones , splayed out , which would account for the extra holes , this chassis has Hi Lux front mounts , so body mounts could have been changed to HL from KC at some point . This chassis has HL front tires too and Lunchbox rears pulled over the 2.2 rims for that wide , flat look

Yeah, I put those rear lunchbox tires on it, the old tires were almost slicks. I did have it as a fully functional car at one point, but because of the scarcity of parts, it eventually went into storage. I did have plans for it, but it's just not worth time. Also my collection has grown bigger than I want and I need room for new stuff.

I would buy the HL project , but again I'm in the UK . The spares are hard to find as you know and original 'balloon' tires are as rare as hens teeth , but there are good alternatives , HPI , Schumacher Vee2 etc
