What are these lines on the Bodyshell?

Recommended Posts

Today I started prepping the R32 shell and noticed these two lines which run accross the roof and bonnet. They are in the moulding, not the protective layer.

I don't recall them being on the my 1:1 (which was a GTS-t not GTR!)

Are they something to help with the manufacturing process, design flaw or mistake?

This.

Do not care too much. It is only RC body, which is far away from any static model or real car.

It is also probably out of scale and dimensions are not correct if you compare it to real car.

Im not 100% sure, but I think the mold is made of three parts and those are the seams between those parts.

yup, that’s how Tamiya achieves the detailed front and rear ends of touring car bodies. A one piece strikes usually look kinda angled and not scale. For example, look at Tamiya’s Rover Mini Racing body vs. any other manufacturer.

Yes, those are the lines where the parts of the mold meet. They more or less disappear after painting, so it's not a big deal unless they go right through a window (like they always seem to).

They are very common on most Tamiya shells. Here is it on my CR-Z.

RC makes poor accurate scale models anyway, if you compare them to a static model. The CR-Z, for example, has a real WB of 2425mm but the chassis of the RC version has a scale WB of 2570mm.

Yep, this. One difference between a repro body and a Tamiya is that they know how to, and they go through the effort a designing a multi piece plug. These lines are a small price to pay for realistic front and rear.

Interestingly I don't think Tamiya always had that skill. The Golf mk1 and Renault 5 Turbo for example, which came out in the 80's had the main body in Lexan with generous draft angles everywhere and then some ABS parts for the front end. Today if they did it from scratch I'm pretty sure they would use a multi piece mold like their other bodies.

Thanks everyone, good to understand the "why"

As mentioned, not really a scale body and by the time I've finished with it it will be even less so
