toyolien 5908 Posted October 18 I've been eyeing the XM-01 up since it was announced. I did think that it would be too close to my XV-02 so decided I'd leave it. However, after seeing several builds I changed my mind. So, here we are again with another photo heavy build thread. It's a nice small compact box. Some of these hop ups I had from my XV-02 build, and others found there way here on their own... I thought I'd take the time to do a step by step build thread on this one. Let me know if it gets too boring and I'll just revert back to pics only. Step 1. This just requires you to charge the battery, so we'll skip that for now. Step 2. Attaching chassis parts. This chassis feels much stiffer than the stock XV-02 chassis. It feels nice and stiff like the carbon reinforced XV-02RS chassis. Titanium screws. Apparently these make the car much, much faster. First step require three lock nuts to be 'glued' into the inside of the chassis tub. This is Tamiya's recommended glue. (it's like Shoo Goo). Rest of the other parts in this step. And the first sight of some included 'blue' parts. First of the option parts. Step 2 complete. Step 3. Steering tie rods. Step 4. Steering linkage. Next 2 option parts. All done. Step 5. Attaching steering linkage. Step 6. Gear differentials. All the parts laid out to build 2 diffs. Step 7. Adding fluid. The kit supplied fluid is 3000wt. As this will be a road only car I'm going a little thicker. 5000wt. Step 8. Front arms. Look how tiny these things are. Threadlock to add some scale. I changed out the steel balls for these. And, then replaced the kit plastic spacers for these. Step 9. Fitting front arms. Small correction on this step. The manual shows two of the screws going in to the wrong holes. Going with this suspension mount as this offers up to 1.5 degrees rear toe. That will be enough on this car. And these adjustable mounts for the other end of the suspension shaft. Section 10. Attaching front bevel gear. Step 11. Attaching front arms and diff to chassis. Step 12. Rear arms. Step 13. Attaching rear arms. Step 14. Rear gearbox. Step 15. Attaching rear bevel gear. Step 16. Attaching rear arms and diff. Step 17. Spur gear. There are two pins in this step and they differ in length by 0.8mm. Tamiya does colour code them though, which is helpful. Step 20. Attaching rear gearbox. I decided to use some stainless bolts for the lower two fixings. The black is the kit one. The left hand is a longer stainless bolt, and the right hand is the one I cut down. This allows just the right amount of thread to protrude, and ensures that more of the shaft of the bolt is in the plastic. And, now it's looking more like a chassis. Step 21. Attaching spur gear. Step 24. Attaching motor. (step 22-23 is for the other wheelbase options). I've opted for a 15.5t motor for now. But, might swap it for a 17.5t if it's a little too fast. That's all for now. That was a lot of work but a really enjoyable build so far. More coming soon...
svenb 4240 Posted October 18 You weren't wrong about "picture heavy" I see loads of hop ups that are the same as the xv02, didn't realise they were so similar! Will enjoy the build Neil 👍🏻

I do like having spares :o) 6 hours ago, mtbkym01 said: I feel like I’m actually building this one. Loving it Thank you. That's a great compliment. 5 hours ago, chris.alex said: Beautiful. You should use aluminium spanner for aluminium turnbuckles! Sorry, but nothing wrong here. This turnbuckle wrench is the TRF wrench for aluminium turnbuckles. The all blue wrench doesn't last long. I think that's because it's not heat treated. It's just anodised. The TRF wrench, however, is much tougher. Mr @toyolien, for when as much effort goes into the build thread as building the car 😉 Thank you sir. There was a point last night where I was 40 minutes into copy and pasting all the photo links that I thought; "this is just too much hassle". Then I remembered how much I enjoy reading other peoples' build threads so I persevered. I'm determined to complete this thread, but the body painting is my least favourite part...

Nikko85 3851 Posted October 19 This reads like a more detailed version of the manual with actual photos. Fantastic resource as always.

Of course, it was joke I love your builds. I do not think you have huge competition here. Maybe few users more which are on similar level.

Bizarrely enough. The blue aluminium wrench that Tamiya make doesn't specify whether it's for aluminium or titanium turnbuckles.
toyolien 5908 Posted October 20 I forgot to add the pic of the motor cover installed on my last update. On to bag C, Step 26-27. Front upper arms and damper stay. Random pic of my messy work bench. More turnbuckles to assemble. I do have a couple of nice Tamiya tools to save my fingers. Installed on to the damper stay. Step 28. Attaching front damper stay. Front lower guard installed. Step 29-30. Rear upper arms and damper stay. Rear under guard fitted. Step 32. Front uprights. This step requires a 2.5mm hole to be drilled on the c-hub to accept a 3mm grub screw. Fortunately I have a tool for that job! I'll be using this car in the 'low' setting. According to the manual I'll need two of these which are not supplied in the kit. Luckily I have a few spare. Step 33. Front shafts. I'll be using the kit rears, but the front I'm switching out for the double cardan joints. You'll also need the #42218 axle shafts. These are shorter than the ones that come supplied in the #42300 pack. I always use a little AW grease when assembling drive shafts. Front shafts complete. Step 34. Attaching front uprights. Step 35-36. Rear uprights. I had these left over from my M-07 build. Luckily they fit the XM-01, providing you are using the 'low' setting, which I am. Also picked up these beauties. Step 38. Attaching rear uprights. That's all I've had time to do this weekend. Next up will be the dampers.

You are correct. I also have those, but for some reason Tamiya has you install those right before fitting the wheels. So, they'll be appearing later on in the build.
svenb 4240 Posted October 20 I wonder if the 54781 aluminium rear uprights will fit the xv02 rs pro 🤔 I'm not sure if I should continue with my soon to be boring build ! This build thread is very pro indeed 🎖️
toyolien 5908 Posted October 20 Just now, svenb said: I wonder if the 54781 aluminium rear uprights will fit the xv02 rs pro 🤔 Funny you should say that. I wondered the same thing when I was fitting them. I may assemble the kit plastic ones and see if they'll fit the XV-02. (If I get chance)
