Thoughts on Quadtrack (GF-01FT)

Well I couldn't pass up on the price, so I'll be joining the Quadtrack club it seems... :) Went for the GF-01FT. Be awesome if we get some snow this winter.

Awesome dude. Have you decided if you are going to build the tracks with the grousers? About the only real suggestion with the build is to get a decent servo. There is a lot of surface area on those front tracks for the servo to swing. I used a Hi Tech D645 which seems to work pretty well. Have fun with the build!

Yes I think I'll include the grousers. Just umming over bearings, normally it'd be a no brainer, but this won't be for speed. The bering kit is £62 + postage, so a bit pricey. Servo wise, I'll probably go for one of them 25kg jobbies from eBay or Aliexpress. They've worked well in my Dynahead.

I had no idea that the front wheels need to be undriven - all the stuff one learns ... :)

It's just because the rear tracks would be a totally different gear ratio than the front. I mean technically you could do it but the front wheels would be trying to drag the rear tracks. You would probably wind up damaging something along the way.

I asked a similar question before regarding different sized wheels. Basically, a center diff is needed if front and rear are not the same, if not, the gearbox will probably break.

Took you a while considering you are the one to sound the alert on this!

For bearings, go Aliexpress. I just received 4 x 10 1150s for £12.

Also ordered 7 x 10 850s for £18.

Don't go for the usual bearing kits, they are very expensive.

Thanks for the heads up on the bearings.

Yeah I wasn't in a rush, shouldn't really have been buying anything tbh. But I just got paid. I also had a look about and everywhere else I looked either didn't have the GF-01FT or had it up at the retail price of well over £300. I assume if I didn't buy know, I'd be kicking myself later. Although oddly I think Modelsport have dropped the price further. I'm sure it was £189 when I started this thread, but it was £179 when I bought last night.

I’m a bit annoyed, I bought the landfreeder purely as I wanted to use the tracks on my Konghead (gf06) and thought I might use the body elsewhere.

I didn’t know that a) you couldn’t run the gf06 without the front being tracks as well (ie just having 4 track units for the rear is insufficient) and b) the landfreeder version has some parts tree bits missing that are necessary for the gf06! so I can’t use them for that purpose anyway!

They don’t include ESC from TTM, so if you need one that’s an extra £15+. Granted TTM included delivery.

MS also include delivery, just not to me. It costed me £12 for the GF (see my screenshot on previous page). TTM will deliver to me for free, so no ESC is fine. In fact if there is a chance of getting a TBLE, I will rather no ESC. Since I will probably be using a HV servo with these, even a 1060 will not do. I will be using a 9030 which can support HV servos.

Just placed an order for a TT-02FT with TTM. Even threw in paint for the GF and some masking tape and still came out cheaper than the GF order from MS.

ugh - why'd I have to come back in here?  Now I want the Land Cruiser QT as well - hard to say no at that price!

That's the reason why I would never buy the Landfreeder Quadtrack (again)! The Land Cruiser is the far more "versatile" option, apart from the fact that it's cheaper here in Germany (what I find quite astonishing!).

I really like the idea of a 6x6.  I have an unbuilt Volvo A60H kit which is crying out for tracks, but it's an expensive way to build!

For me, the Volvo is more crying for RC4WD Michelin X Force XZL+ tires. And yes, it's an expensive way to build a 6x6 tracked Tamiya. Did it with the King Yellow. Tried to get some money back by selling the body and the wheels/tires.

if the gear ratio and height increase of the tracks is equal to the gear ratio and height increase of the portal axles used on the G6-01TR (when used with a suitably-sized wheel), then you could do that.  But I haven't done any investigation into that.

I tried to get some numbers calculated. The gear ratio in the portals is 2,0714:1 (29 teeth vs 14 teeth). The diameter of the drive wheel with tracks on it is around 40mm (20mm radius). Trying to calculate that leads me to a tire diameter of around 82/83mm if you want to match the tracks. The height of the portals with a wheel on it can be adjusted with the damper length. May be possible to achieve. And I am beginning to like this idea, the more I think of it. I have to get the parts!
