Braking on Throttle Release

Recommended Posts

On my non-Tamiya basher, the car brakes very effectively when you release the throttle.  This doesn't happen on my TT02-d.

Set-up:

  • Carson Dragster 70A brushed ESC
  • Tamiya 540 Sport Tuned
  • Flysky FSGT-3B transmitter
  • FS-GR3E receiver

Is there something in the set-up or is it not an option?

Not an option on the Carson Dragster ESC.  Pull the throttle stick or trigger back to brake.

I've read elsewhere that if you remove the jumper the one for 1/10 car, boat and crawler) completely, it should activate drag braking. I have not tried this myself.

I think it does, but you lose the regular braking function.  It's described as a crawler setting.

Interesting, might be worth a try!

I don't really brake much on the tight course I've been doing, so might not be a huge issue. Thinking about it though, not having any brakes might be a problem on a bigger circuit.

You have three phases during run:

- Acceleration

- Coasting

- Braking

You need all of them! Going from throttle to instant braking totally does not make sense when you want to run car on any track.

I have that on one of my car. You have to be careful of it if you are used to normal braking as if you try to brake on it, it slams straight into reverse.

I tried that on my GF01 but hated it. It doesn't apply the breaks, it slams on them like a student driver. It made driving it almost impossible.

Points well made, thank you! My driving skills (lack of!) are the problem.

I'll be giving it a miss then :D

However they are great to those "can I have a go" kids* who have no idea of how to brake. Shout at them to stop and they just let go, slamming the brakes on, preventing damage to the car.

*the kind of annoying kids that have a AA powered car and think they can handle our 3S cars. Yet not the kind you can say no to, maybe kids of your friends, etc...

Not really true as lots of competitive racers use drag brake for different kind of rc cars.

Drag brake or brake by release of throttle does not mean 100% brake force but 20% for example. It's really useful.

A lot of brushless ESCs and even some brushed ones have an adjustable drag brake so you can set how much brake force is applied when you release the throttle. The Hobbywing 10BL60 that I suggested in your "What to build next" thread is one such ESC. If you get the optional programming card for it, there are all sorts of parameters that can be tweaked.

Thank you - I spent a lot of time "researching" the car and electrics yesterday. About to place an order based on what I read :D

Looking forward to seeing what you have decided on. Will we be seeing a build thread?

If the esc is the same as the hobbywing 1060, if the jumper is set to for/rev, neutral is drag brake, and if its anything like the 1060, the drag brake is stronger than the brakes, in for / brake /rev

TC-01 with the CLK body

LRP V10 Spec6 - 17 x 2

Hobbywing Quicrun 1060 Brushed SBEC Waterproof 60A ESC

I know there will be no programmable braking - I'll just have to learn to drive better!

Not sure I could do the model justice with a build thread - there's already one on the forum anyway

Having read thorugh a few of the build threads, I realise how much I enjoy them and how much there is to be gained for the builder and the reader, so I will be endeavouring to produce one. Won't be for a few weeks though.
